After a crazy 7hr bus ride from Lago Agrio (mad driver; cobbled roads; knackered bus and pitch black narrow roads) and no sleep I arrived at my hostel and aprehensively ran the bell at 3.30am. Didn´t seem to matter and after 5 days in the jungle a hot shower was soo fantastic. That day I booked onto a white water rafting trip for the next day. There were 4 of us and it was a lot of fun. We managed to flip the boat and create chaos, but along with lots of games in the boat and facepainting midway and a beer to round off the day it was a lot of fun... read more

After a hectic week working in my adopted Ecuadorian family's stationary shop i decided to take a mini break to explore the East of Ecuador. As every Ecuadorian will repeatedly remind you, it is a very small country but has four distinct regions, the coastal region, the highlands, the jungle in the East and dubiously the Island region (the Galapagos)...i mean is that really a whole separate region or is it a few rocky outcrops. On my arrival in Tena, the gateway to the jungle, i was approached by a couple of guys claiming to be tour agents. Normally i would use the classic "No Gracias" and find a hotel but these two were kind of friendly and i thought what harm would it do to check out their tour. In a small wooden hut off ... read more

Ten years after my first rafting experience in Albury, New South Wales, I Finally got to go whitewater rafting once again. And it was great! All the thrills that I expected and much more... Tena is Ecuador's whitewater capital and the river that we rafted in, Rio Misahualli, was used to practice for the World Championships in Baeza (2005 I think). Tena is north of Puyo, where I volunteered at the Santa Martha rehabilitation centre and seemed further into the jungle than I was before. It's such a great feeling as you are heading up, feeling the warmth and seeing forest for miles around... I did a Class 4 day trip and apparently the river was now only half or three quarters its actual volume, so I can't even imagine rafting in full swell, that would ... read more

We're now two weeks into June, and I'd like to congratulate everyone in Britain for being able to enjoy much better weather than we're getting here, slap bang under the Equator. The days start out with so much promise - blue skies, brilliant sun, lovely and warm - but sometime after lunch it's as if the weather just gives up and throws it down with rain. EVERY DAY. Although everyone promised that the rain would stop the minute we hit rain, it now looks like we're holding out for July (when I won't be here) for the REAL Ecuadorian Summer.... read more

Hello all, I´ve been a but lazy about posting, so I want to assure everybody that I am in fact still alive, and still in Ecuador. I finished teaching in mid May, and fortunately the last two months ended up being a great experience. I became comfortable teaching, the students got used to me and my Spanish improved to the point where I could actually run something resembling a class, on top of that I had the 88 coolest students on the planet in my school, which helps. However, my last week ended the same way my time in the community started - in the rain and with me not knowing what was going on. During this week, while I was administering a test, the caretaker of the school led a ram in and bound the ... read more

This is the tale of my worst journey so far on my trip. I was in the town of Coca, deep in the jungle, about to embark on a six-hour bus ride to Tena, another remote town. Being the first person to book a ticket four days previously, I had been given my pick of the seats from a nice diagram on the wall. I picked seat number 1, thinking of more legroom and a great view of the road over the drivers shoulder. How wrong was I? The driver was seated in his own sealed off compartment with blacked-out windows, so looking forward I could see precisely nothing. A girl was seated by the window, so my view that way was limited. And leg room was minimal, even by the standards of my little legs. ... read more

The road was rough and windy on the way to the jungle. We drove through Puyo and past Tena. Parking up next to the Rio Napo, we took a 10 minute boat road to the lodge where were staying, the Anaconda Lodge. We passed a really flash lodge first so we were a little disappointed when we arrived to our lodge which was a lot more basic with a few disused buildings rotting away as well as some half built buildings. Our room was a simple wooden room with netting instead of windows. The room was in a building of 6 rooms. On stilts and all wooden, you could feel and hear every movement that other people made. But we did get mosquito nets and later we would find that the owner, Adonis, and his ... read more

hi friends. Please forgive me for this Mega-Post…but it is trying to capture 4 rad days of jungle. My journey has carved deeper into the heart of Ecuador. It has been exciting, awe-inspiring and heart breaking. After a few more bumpy bus rides we arrive in the jungle town of Tena. This is where many of the Amazon families and tours stock up on supplies. Our guide suggested we buy some food and gifts here to give to the families and schools as a token of our appreciation. My gift idea was a ball for the school children. Yeah for games! We also bought rice and beans and of course....lots of chocolate. After shopping, we met with the family we will be staying with. They are Quechan Indians that have lived in the jungle for their ... read more

Well, we made it back from our Jungle Tech Trip. WOW!!! The jungle was everything I though it would be and more. We left last Thursday from Cayambe and drove to a town east of Quito called Baeza. Baeza is in the cloud forest (not jungle) and was home to the 2005 world rafting championships. There was not much to the town, however, the visit to the organic farm and agroforestry project developed by the municipal government was awesome. We learned how to make a fertilizer stew using goat shit, molases, a plant called ahi (like hot peppers - it is a natural insect repellant), alfalfa, goat milk, yeast, and water. It was definitely an interesting brew. After doing that, we learned more about developing worm beds to create fertilizer for crops, then we had a ... read more

On Saturdays, there is a market in Cruz Chicta. We usually make the hour-long walk to the beach around 7am and catch a water-taxi downriver about 15 minutes. Our community members were excited to point out how much bigger Cruz Chicta was - they have a church and a colegio (high-school). We usually buy fresh fruits and vegetables as well as other foods (ketchup, salt, sugar, etc.) and sip on a warm Pepsi. In the market, you can also buy clothes, electronics and batteries, home and kitchen supplies and other misc. items. Later, we can stop off in one of the two bars for a cold beer while all of the locals drink ¨vente shinco.¨ - a very strong but suprisingly smooth sugar cane liquor, so named because you can buy a small cup for ... read more
