We spent almost two days in Baños which is an amazing little town where you can see waterfalls, lush forests, a steep gorge, and is perfect for outdoor adventurers. Arriving in Baños, we each picked from a nearly endless list of things to do: paragliding, rafting, canyoning, thermal spas/massages, ziplining, etc. I decided to start off with a hike which ended up being a very steep climb to the top of a mountain. I got some great views from the top and felt a sense of accomplishment but was exhausted by the time I got down! From there I headed over to a motorbike shop to rent a 4-wheeler for a few hours. With an "assurance" of safety, a 5 min tutorial of the bike and a 10 min explanation of where to go with a ... read more

P... read more

We had a really good sleep-in at La Casa Verde, the bed was super-comfy and we wandered downstairs for breaky. The hostel is very 'eco-friendly'; which apparently means they must serve really nice fresh food for breaky! We both had massive bowls of granola, fruit salad (with strawberries which Rach proceeded to pick out) and yogurt. Followed by the freshest bread we'd had since we were last at Bakers Delight. The hostel manager (can't remember her name but was super nice to us), even brought out a little jar of Vegemite and said that apparently all Aussie guests get excited by this little jar of black stuff. We went back to our room which was located right near the wi-fi router which meant we could stream the French Open final! So we sat and watched Nadal ... read more

We got up and thankfully it was the last time I had to hear “I'm in love with this beautiful shower”...Rach's new shower singing tune in tribute to the epic pressure and hot water that our hotel bathroom generates.. Well, that's what I thought however she's still blasting it out right now at the top of her lovely singing voice as I'm sitting here writing this blog in our Banos hostel (now, where is my iPod). We organised a cab to take us to the South Terminal bus station. As with anything in Quito, it wasn't as close as we had expected and about an hour later we arrived. It seems that whenever they decide to build a new piece of infrastructure, be it an airport or bus station, they must build it in the most ... read more

At the beginning of the week I arrived in Baños - the adventure capital of Ecuador. The small town is set in a valley that is surrounded by sheer mountains and even an active volcano. It is where the thrill seekers congregate to partake in the likes of white water rafting, canyoning and bridge jumping. I set myself up a a new hostel just on the outskirts of town (which in Baños means that it was a five minute walk to the Center of town instead of a three minute one) called La Casa del Molino Blanco which was amazing. The beds had duvets on them and the cleaner not only folded all of my clothes for me, but put everything in logical piles depending on what category they fell into. The hostel also had amazing ... read more

Looks like i lost blogs 7 & 8 so will redo from Malinguapamba (MP). BANOS -- after my spanish classes i did quite a bit of hiking wanting to get ready for MP hiking and field work. Banos is lower than MP but similar steep country with centuries of agriculture in relative harmony with the landscape, that it, most of the ag is small (human) scale worked by hand with some amount of disking etc by small tractors. Soil is often quite rich and deep developed on colluvium and landslide deposits from metamorphic rocks (schist). Lots of great examples of ag/fenceline best practices using plants to control slope, which is often MUCH more than 100%, 70-80 degrees and lots of vertical cuts. While most is green and well vegetated, when soils/rock give way the landslides/debris avelanches ... read more

Wrapped up my Banos trip, focus was on Spanish classes but plenty of hiking opportunity and wanted to get dialed into vegetatation, soils, stability before Malinguapamba (MP). Banos is warmer than MP and sets on metamorphic rock with volcanics above. Plenty of deep (Mull) soils, very well vegetated, bewildering mix of plants. Remarkably stable for such steep land and rainfall (this is the headwaters for the Amazon). Long history of people living and growing crops on land at and greater than 100% which is the grade for a black diamond mogul ski run in Colorado. Cattle are tied up to a stake for grazing each day, so they don't do as much damage as if they were more free to roam. Next to Latacunga on way to MP.... read more

Spending middle part of my "Volun-Tourism" Sabbatical here in Banos, taking Spanish classes at Raices Spanish School, with Maestro Marco helping me focus in on Cientifico de la Cuenca (Watershed Science) including opportunities de practicar mis lecturas. Then afternoons walking and hiking marvelous area INCREDIBLE vertical everywhere -- hike to ridge and find higher ridge beyond then volcano beyond. Preparing for Malingua Pamba, hiked 500 meters elevation yesterday just sore afterwards and thirsty (good to stay in Hostal with thier own brew pub), trying to understand orchids, more photos of dirt and plants to come. Carnival was fun and quite family friendly here, lots of people fun. Hostal Posada Del Arte very comfortable, gourmet. Good sized resort town, nice people, excellent food, healthy feeling of prosperity. Cloud forest all 'round.... read more

Friday 28/12/12 – We woke early, ate left over pizza for breaky and prepared for the short ride to the city of Banos - nestled in the valley below a volcano that started erupting just a few weeks ago. With fingers crossed, the bikes fired up and we hit the road. A short one hour ride ended up stretching towards two hours when we missed the turn off to Banos and wrongly guessed the next road would also take us there. After countless small towns, sharp right turns and one big town consisting almost entirely of roadside stalls selling denim jeans and jackets, we crossed a bridge spanning a deep canyon and arrived in the city of Banos. We pulled into a hotel and after a pleasant chat with the owner unpacked our gear and locked ... read more
