Arriving at the campsite so late meant that it was a lovely surprise the next morning to wake to find that we were camped in a beautiful valley surrounded by waterfalls and lush forest. Rio Verde is a tiny little town and its main attraction is the proximity to Banos and the many adrenalin activities in the surrounding area. After days on the road and in the jungle a day of leisure was much in need so with that in mind after breakfast we hitched the 15k into Banos. With buses few and far between in this part of the country it’s common for locals heading in your direction to give the gringo traveller a lift. After a few moments at the side of the road a couple stopped to offer a ride, it was bumpy ... read more

Middle Earth and Snakes!! We were sad to leave Otavalo but time is flying by and so we headed back to Quito, this time we stayed in the Hostal Mediterraneo, cheap as chips and better telly!! Watched the Jets on Monday night NFL and Big Nick tried with reasonable success to teach Mrs P the rules ready for our trip to see them in NY in November. Mrs P was a little under the weather but recovered enough to visit the Mitad Del Mundo, 30km North of Quito. There is a huge stone monument to mark the ecuator. The area has been turned into a bit of a tourist hotspot but is still worth a visit to stand on the ecuator. Plans are in the pipeline to build a new monument on the true site which ... read more

I arrived 3 days ago in Baños, which lays at the foot of the Tungurahua volcano, YES the one that erupted about a month ago... The city itself is said to be breathtakingly beautiful but it's too touristy, everything is overpriced and more or less "gringolandia". However, the area around Baños is absolutely delightful, it's surrounded by mountains and vulcanos, there are hundreds of waterfalls and the other towns are small and have a village-flair being close to each other and as most places around here are self sustainable. I decided to rent a bike today at 8am and visit the area up until Puyo, a town 60 kilometres "downhill" from Baños, it started great, with a easy downhill road, however what I had to learn the hard way is that where downhill finishes there is ... read more

Geo: -1.47201, -78.327This is a quick entry. We spent a couple of days in Banos. Tried out the thermal baths for which the town is named. I have to say it is a bit creepy bathing with a crowd of strangers (we all had bathing suits on)!We are on a constant search for good coffee and mostly, cannot find it. Although in Banos, we not only found decent coffee we also found the best breakfast ever - fruit, yoghurt, pancakes and cane syrup served on a rooftop terrace surrounding by mountains with Volcano Tungarahua (http://www.volcanodiscovery.com/tungurahua/news.html + http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-2067811/Four-villages-evacuated-volcano-begins-erupt-Ecuador.html) looming in the background. Our main adventure here was taking a local bus up, up, up past the small village of Runtun to a lookout that offered clear views of the volcano which is usually shrouded in clouds but ... read more

We have blazed a trail south to Baños, back into major civilization and a very touristy part of Ecuador, popular for international backpackers and Ecuadorians alike. Baños, baths in Spanish, was named after the town’s sacred hydrothermal springs. Additionally, the town is situated below the Tungurahua Volcano. Tungurahua, which means “throat of fire” in the indigenous language, Quichua has been very active lately. Just a few weeks before our arrival, it was spewing ashes and a few flames. We were concerned we wouldn’t make it to Baños. Fortunately, the volcano has settled a bit, having milder, intermittent activity. We haven’t heard any rumblings as of yet. Getting here was only an adventure for the first half of the trip. We had to take that dirt path out of Chugchilán via the bus to Latacunga, another harrowing ... read more

De wanden waren gemaakt ... read more

Day 12: Banos Day 3: Well, we woke up pretty early again, hoping again to ride mountain bikes down the waterfall route, but it was raining even heavier than yesterday. So it was raining so much, we decided to have breakfast upstairs in the terrace cafe. Manoli and I each ordered a number 2 breakfast which consisted of scrambled eggs, bread and conditments, juice, and coffee. It wasn't bad at all, and not too expensive at $2.50 each. It continued to rain some, so at about 11am we decided to try walking a ways, using umbrellas. We didn't even get out of town before Manoli decided it was very enjoyable this way, so we decided to wait a while longer... maybe after lunch. For lunch, we went to another of the local restaurants to try another ... read more

Day 10: Latacunga to Banos: After a hot shower (interrupted by a brief period of ice cold water), and an okay breakfast, we pacekd up everything and checked out of the hostal. When they heard we were taking a bus to Banos, they told us we shouldn't go to the Terminal Terrestre liked we'd planned, taking one bus to Ambato then another to Banos. Instead, we were told to take a taxi for one dollar to the Puente de San Felipe bus stop to get a direct bus to Banos. That definitely made things easier for us. The taxi driver was very friendly, so we gave him two dollars instead. Within minutes, we boarded the bus to Banos, paying two dollars each. The bus didn't stop all that many times, but we still had to listen ... read more

Day 11: Banos Day 2: We woke up this morning hoping to go mountain biking down the Waterfall Route, but it was raining some from the time we woke up. It wasn't even 7am yet, so we took a walk up towards our nearby waterfall where the famous thermal springs are located. Unbelievably, the main thermal springs near the waterfall were packed with people in their bathing suits, in the cold and rain! Granted, we knew the thermal springs were hot, but it was 7am and it was raining. Since breakfast wasn't included in this hostal, we then went to one of the internet-recommended places, Rico Pan. Manoli ordered fruit & yogurt and I had scrambled eggs, and we both ordered capuccinos. Everything was good and pretty inexpensive. When we returned to the hostal, we gathered ... read more

We decided to spend out last weekend in Ecuador at Baños, a city in the mountains known for its hot springs. I didn´t realize until we got here though, that it was also known for its waterfalls and various adrenaline-packed activities. Baños is located Northeast from Duran in the highlands. After a 6.5 hour overnight bus ride we arrived in Baños at 5am. Thankfully they let us into our hotel at that time and we slept for a little while. When we woke up we had breakfast on the roof and saw for the first time how different this area is from Duran. There are 250 days of rain here per year (we experienced 2) so there is a lot of greenery, something that is surely lacking in dry Duran. Baños is situated in a valley ... read more
