So, after 4 months in Colombia, I have finally left the country, reluctantly. I did not think that I’d enjoy one country to the extent that I could imagine doing business or even living there for a while. I was sceptic at first, very aware of safety issues and so on. G showed us the family life of uncles, aunts and the holy Easter week celebrations in Popayan. This was a great time. Mainly because everyone was so hospitable and interested in G’s international friends. We were served fabulous Colombian food, made fresh juices, driven around to see the best local attractions and viewing points, bars and what have you. It was a great time. And with G as our local Colombia guide, we were ensured to be given the best prices for all things. ... read more

We got back to Santa Marta and made our way to Taganga, approx 10mins out of town. Taganga was once a quaint, picturesque fishing village which has become over run by Scuba Diving Centres and rowdy tourists. It looks like it has lost a lot of its charm but it is one of the cheapest places in South America to do diving but other than that there is little else to do. We came here, as Tony was starting his PADI qualification so at last he could come diving and not be left behind. He did his course with Aquantis Dive School and started with 3 hours of theory at 7pm after our trek through the national park. This would then be followed by 3 days of training. The dive school was brilliant and Tony was ... read more

Up early & repeated yesterdays breakfast before diving. I guess we don't care if we're paying for it...Their coffee is really good, so it's worth it. Plus we get a glass of freshly made juice & it's been different each morning, so that's nice. Today we're diving again with Juan, our DM from yesterday, & one other girl. It's raining this morning & before our first dive we all sat on the boat trying to get ready & just getting drenched from the rain. At least it's not cold & you can't tell it's raining once you're deep enough. It was kind of fun. Our first dive was at Juan's favorite dive spot & it was incredible. There were so many fish & they were sooo big & healthy. We saw the biggest Angelfish we've seen ... read more

Not much to write about this time as my days are being spent diving in a small village called Taganga on the Caribbean coast of Colombia. Before I came away I bought an underwater housing for my small compact camera so have been snapping away on most dives. Most of the good shots are of things like Coral and Anemones that have the good manners not to move out of the way just as I press the shutter. The ones of the fish are a little more hit and miss. I have a whole album full of fish tails swimming out of shot. But overall I'm pleased with the results. So most of this blog is really just a photo album for you to look at. At the top I've also added three short videos i ... read more

We left Villa de Leyva with the intention of breaking the journey halfway in Bucaramanga. Steve was especially keen to stop here as there was another opportunity to eat something odd, this time it was large bottomed ants!  However when we arrived at Bucaramanga bus station and went to purchase tickets for the following day we discovered the journey to Santa Marta was not the mere 8-9 hours the guidebook proclaimed. It was in fact 13-15 hours (i.e. had to be a night bus). So we booked ourselves on to the next bus out. We arrived the following morning in the baking hot coastal city of Santa Marta (after 26 hours and 3 buses). We decided to head to the sleepy fishing village Taganga just a short taxi ride away (thankfully, as for reasons we still ... read more

Yes, that's right.. Just a stopover. I'm not kidding,we really are fed up with the big cities, and Bogota is one! Don't get me wrong, for what we saw (besides the heavy traffic) it's a beautiful one. Actually, we had to stop there not only just to say we had been there but also to pick up a shipment with snus. Anyways, We went to the "Museo de Oro", which is quite nice. A lot of gold I can tell you! From here we took a night-bus up to Santa Marta, which is on the Caribbean coast. It was said to take around 18 hours, but took 20++. Always some roadwork going on. It's a real shocker; stepping out of a bus that almost has frost on the windows because of an incomprehensible need to keep ... read more

Buenas!!

Between my post-bac program and returning to Madison to work at Epic while I apply to medical schools, I decided to take a quick trip to Colombia with my friends Ben (who I traveled with in India and Africa) and Max. I wanted to see what the country I've heard so much about had to offer and I have to say, it lived up to all the hype. Thinking of the violence of the 80s and 90s, many Americans still hold the perception that it is a dangerous country... However, most of the cartel violence has since moved to Mexico and most Colombians, knowing their country's reputation, are fantastically welcoming. Offering mountains, rolling hills, colonial cities, and Caribbean beaches, as well as ridiculously cheap flights from the U.S., I can't imagine the tourist industry blowing up ... read more

Tahlei It´s been quite a while since our last entry. Just a few short days ago we were thinking how nothing has gone wrong for us lately, and we therefore had no stories to tell. Generally having a good time does not for an interesting blog make. However all of a sudden we were hit by a streak of bad luck and the last couple of days nothing has been going our way, so now we´ll have plenty to say! But I´ll start with the good bits. We left Cartagena in a smaller and slower than expected bus to Santa Marta, and from there got a taxi to Taganga, a little fishing village turned gringo and hippie hangout. It is in a beautiful setting in a little bay surrounded by green mountains. We got our first ... read more

Santa Marta, Taganga, Parque National Tayrona 22.04.- ?
