Woke up early on Tues 28th October 8.00 AM and still managed to miss the 11.00 boat to the Tyrona National Park. So we had to get a taxi to the enterance of the park with a Colombian taxi driver called Elvis, pay the entrance fee and get all our bags searched, then hike for 2 hours with all our stuff to get to the beach. It was amazing though we trekked through a jungle and then got to the beach which is absolutely spectacular and is just surrounded by Jungle. It took us about 1 hour and fifteen minutes to get to the first beach (Arriciba), then we had to trek a further 45 minutes through sea water and jungle to get to the beach we wanted to get to which was called Cabo San ... read more

Hi all, Life on the coast of Colombia is quite the paradise. Arriving to this paradise is a whole other story. Our journey to the north coast began on Wednesday afternoon September 17th at 3:30 pm. The bus was quite comfy, large reclining chairs and TV´s. These conditions are ideal for bus rides up to 12 hours. Try and double that with a dose of drunken vomiting teenagers, 2 mechanical breakdowns, being stuck on the bus with stench of vomit at 3:00 in the morning when it´s 80 degrees and no AC or open windows. Add few military check points, and random bouts of the speakers blaring the song “Me gusta, Me gusta” by Silvstre Dangond and you still barely understand what it´s like to ride in a bus for 22 hours in Colombia. Despite our ... read more

Santa Marta We reached Santa Marta after a very early departure (4AM) from Maracaibo, Venezuela. The trip was uneventful, except for police blockades, many passport checks and a maniac driver in our Por Puesto (Shared taxi) - basically an old Chevy or Ford with a 5 litre engine. We booked into a very nice hostel, called Hotel Nueve Granada. This is probably one of the nicest places we have stayed up to date. It has a small pool and palms in the courtyard, with friendly, helpful staff and a very fat cat. We booked in early and wandered around Santa Marta for the rest of the day. Santa Marta is an old town, but the old town glory has been replaced by concrete buildings in most places. It has managed to retain some charm, though. What ... read more

Some 4 days and 8 buses later with a short stop off in Atacamas - Ecuador, we (me and the crazy Italian) were in Columbia. Not much to say about Ecuador except its the first time in my life where I¨ve lied about my age to make myslef younger. I know, can you believe it, even with a baby face like mine I was saying I was 18. Atacamas is like the Newquay of England with as many young aspiring teenagers looking for fun and frolics as the surfing south coast of England. So being at the grand old age of 23 ït was too much to tell. First stop in Columbia was Cartagena. Beautiful little city shame about the beach. You kind of expect ever beach to be as perfect as the Caribbean should be, ... read more

After asking around in Taganga we found a boat to take us 1 hour round the coast to Cabo San Juan de la Guia in the Tayrona National Park. The first couple of people we asked wanted a lot of money 50,000 and 40,000 each but then we met John hanging out on the beach and he does it for 35,000 pesos per person as he's a friendly chatty guy that easily puts groups together (about 14 went out on our boat). We asked about his name (he's a tall carribbean Colombian black man) and when he was young mucho boats from North America used to land in Taganga to buy massive quantities of cocaine and marijuana and his parents got to know many American names. As he said its much different now, as evidenced by ... read more

The day had finally arrived for me to be sitting on a beach taking in the tranquility........a feat I had been trying to obtain for many months and had pretty much given up on as there are very few good beaches in the countries I had been in. Sharyn and I got ourselves organised and then got a lift into Santa Marta with Santiago to catch the bus out to the Parque Tayrona. In Santa Marta we had to grab some food and other necessities before finding the bus, this in itself proved to be a very fun experience and very Colombian. When we walked into the supermarket we found two men, one playing guitar and the other keyboards through an amp, and belting out a few salsa tracks for the shoppers who were enjoying the ... read more
