Some 4 days and 8 buses later with a short stop off in Atacamas - Ecuador, we (me and the crazy Italian) were in Columbia. Not much to say about Ecuador except its the first time in my life where I¨ve lied about my age to make myslef younger. I know, can you believe it, even with a baby face like mine I was saying I was 18. Atacamas is like the Newquay of England with as many young aspiring teenagers looking for fun and frolics as the surfing south coast of England. So being at the grand old age of 23 ït was too much to tell.
First stop in Columbia was Cartagena. Beautiful little city shame about the beach. You kind of expect ever beach to be as perfect as the Caribbean should be, except it was pretty dirty. So, we´re told to go to an Island which was an hours boat journey away from the city, called Playa Blanca. After a heavy night of drinking, and the ran keeping me up all night, we were a little undecided what to do. We all woke up nice and early at 7 (still pissing it down) and sat in
the lobby of the hostel waiting for the Hobbits (the Irish, always late). After much descusion, "it´s now or never" chat......we decide to stick to the plan, (seeing as the spliffs and a big bottle of rum were at the ready), and get on a boat. Not too sure what I was expecting, certainly not a ferry, but certainly not a little fishing boat! With a rather lovely hangover just starting to settle in we took a rather bumpy ride to Playa Blanca. As soon as they droped us off on the beach front, dunked my head in the crystle clear water I was bouncing about like no-bodies again. And then the sun finally came out and we were loving it, right decision. Perfect! Playa Blanca doesn´t have very much to offer except a nice and relaxing time. There are little places along the beach where you sleep in hammocks and eat you fresh, fried fish super (man thats a lot of F´s). Or you daringly get some lovey fresh (yeah right) camarones from the local beach seller. Well me and shrimp have since fallen out. I thought we had an understanding that i could eat as much shrimp as
possible and not get ill.....
Playa Blanca was the perfect relaxation that was needed after the hectic bus journey. Unfortunately, being not that well prepared we didn´t have enough money between us to stay another night, so jumped back on the boat... which funnily enough was kind of a ferry, and took a very slow ride back to Cartagena.
Next stop Taganga. After a painful five hour bus journey holding my stomach and cursing the shrimps we were in Taganga. A qwaint little fishing village with lots of scuba diving, and again lots of relaxation. Still looking for the perfect beach adorning my door step I rush to the beach the first day. Again, dissapointed! Not only was the water not up to my caribbean criteria, but I happend to swim past a condom and a sanitary towel, so thats a x from me. Still hopeful we hear that if you take a short 20 minute walk along the cliff edge you can find a nicer beach. - Playa Grande. "Its good, but its not the one".
Park Tyrona - You beauty! It actually looks like someone has placed every bit of beautiful looking rocks and trees
in one place to form this very rare looking National Park. Again leaving after a heavy night, we grab a little fishing boat, which decides to break down a lot on the way, but no worries as the sun was out in its full glory, so we just did some on board sun bathing. Park Tyrona, it would be nice if it was our little secret, unfortunately not! Hundreds of people were there, the camp site had an atmosphere of being in a festival, as there were so many hammocks and tents. So we stayed one night here, and the following day bumped into someone we knew that told us of a better beach 40 minutes walk away. Now this was perfect. Set back a little from the beach among the ever growing palm trees, the clunk clunk of the coconuts falling, an a pretty much secluded beach just for us. This was pure paradise! Now all i needed was my tasty fish super - Perfect!
