Into the JungleBas talked me into taking my first trek. Well actually, I talked myself into it, but I wanted someone to blame in case I didn´t like it, so I told him it was his fault. We were joined by a reticent Englishman named Jack and a cheeky Belgian polyglot who mastered 7 languages seemingly simply to commandeer conversations in as many tongues as possible.By the end of the trip I was simultaneously wishing she would either shut up or get eaten by a jaguar. I didn´t really care which. The trip started out very easy, with a splash in a river swimming hole and a nice lunch. After that it was a FIFTEEN MILE HIKE straight up into the SUN (truestorysweartogod).Ok.Maybe it wasn´t THAT bad, but it was a rather steep climb with no shade. Add ... read more

Finding our way to the Lost City There are many great treks in South America, but certainly nothing quite like the Ciudad Perdida trek, a 6 day round trip which takes you to the heart of the Colombian jungle and back, where seeing lost cities, fording rivers, walking in tropical downpours and learning how to make cocaine are just some of the activities covered. Though located only 40 km from Santa Marta, there is a strong sense of isolation and remoteness in the jungles around Ciudad Perdida (Lost City in English). This area is home to a number of indigenous groups, most visibly the Koguis, who claim to be descendants of the Tayroni, the civilisation to whom the Ciudad Perdida belonged. The "lost city" was rediscovered as recently as 1972, when grave robbers came upon the ... read more

To finish our mad treks of South America, we decided to take a 6 day trip into the Colombian jungle to visit the "Ciudad Perdida" (Lost City). Whilst it was not quite Indiana Jones, it was still pretty exciting, with us hiking through the rainforest, struggling across a raging river on multiple occasions, visiting a 'cocaine factory' and finally arriving at the Ciudad Perdida having avoided being kidnapped by FARC... Day 1 We were picked up early from our hotel in Taganga and taken by minibus and then jeep to the village of El Mamey. We took it easy there for a while and chatted to the other people in our group. We had booked the trek through Magic Tours which seems to put together relatively small groups, so we just had three more trekkers to ... read more

Wow, there is something really weird going on in here...I have finally found all the male travelers that were mysteriously missing in the rest of my trip. In fact pretty much everyone is here. I never imagined that there would be so many people traveling in Colombia, in fact I was all geared up for solitary hotel rooms again like Bolivia but boy was I wrong! Anyway, getting back to what I ment to be writting about.......I mentioned to Marlien, a Dutch girl in my apartment in Taganga, that I was thinking of doing the trek to the lost city but I was still umming and ahhing over it, so when she said the same we decided to motivate each other to get our arses out of Taganga for a bit and go together. The trek ... read more

As James (one of the guys in the trek) put it, ´this must be one of the greatest adventures of all time, lads!´ No one is really sure how far we walked during our six days in the jungle, but a conservative guess would be 45 miles, most of it being on a steep incline. The trail afforded great views of mountainous jungle vistas with steam radiating up from the greenery, turquoise rivers, tunnels of pure vegitation... it was like hiking through Jurrasic Park, sans the reptiles. There were probably about 25 river crossings, and mud bogs 100 meters long. We all came out with hundreds of mosquito bites each. It was certainly more difficult than any of us expected, but very rewarding. On the first day, we got a ride in a converted Land Cruiser/carnival ... read more

Hi all, hope this finds you all well. As you have probably guessed we have made it to south america. Sounds easy dosent it? Well i wasn´t! We decided to take the road less traveled and make our way to Columbia by flying to a remote Panamaian boarder town on the Carribean coast and catch a series of small boats to the first major Columbian city. I sounded easy enough until we arrived at the boarder town (viallage) but without my pack. Usually not a big issue but there were only 3 flights a week and its not accessable by road so we were suck! We werent the only ones. A Chezc who didn´t seem to like wearing his pants all that much was in the same provebial boat. 3 other traveles also got delaýed for ... read more

A trip to ancient Tayrona Indians’ Ciudad Perdida (Lost City) is more like a journey to another world. It’s an intense 6-day uphill trek that can only be described as unique. On the way up through seemingly boundless dense rainforest one can easily why this country is such an easy place for guerillas to hide. Fortunately, this is now one of the areas that are back in the control of the Colombian government, and the various army posts along the way ensure that the chances of you running into trouble are small. Along the path, as well as on the actual site of the old civilization’s city (which no doubt must have played some part in the inspiration of the Indiana Jones movies), there are still indigenous Indians living pretty much the same as they did ... read more

As I lifted my bare foot from the smooth, dull grey, slippery surface of another round topped river stone to fight through the current that seemed to cut my feet from beneath me, and then stretched out through the flowing, fresh, cool water to find another sure spot to set down my slowly shifting weight, I realised how great things at that exact moment in my life were. And as I think of that thought, and take into consideration this moment right now, I feel pretty fortunate still. I am here at the Northern tip of South America, just out of the jungle covered valleys of the Sierra Nevada of Colombia taking another step in a journey that has run through all kinds of different worlds, and has put me in company with some wonderful ... read more
