Sandwiched either side of my visa run to Venezuela, I was able to first visit the rugged interior in and around Bogota and then travel along Colombia’s Caribbean coast. The stint around Bogota saw me visit some smaller towns which were hugely enjoyable and once again showed why Colombia has been the country I have enjoyed most on my travels so far. Places like San Gil and Villa de Leyva have the potential to become household names as the popularity of Colombia increases, given their natural beauty, variety of activities and relative proximity to the capital Bogota. In fact if I was to dish out sage investment advice, it would be that starting up a top notch hostel in either of those two spots would be a sound choice…expect that someone has got there first and ... read more

Hola amigos I havent had time to write in ages due to remote locations or staying in hostels where the internet has too many people using it and a bit patchy as a result. I spent 3 nights in San Gil. As it is the adventure capital of Colombia, I went caving to Cueva Las Vacas, the Cows Cave. So called because they only discovered it when cows got stuck in there, at least I think that is right. Anyway, I dont feel the need to go caving anymore, at one point we had to go underwater for a few seconds to go through to the main part of the cave and that was enough adventure sports for me. On Tuesdays the hostel hosts "Tejo Tuesdays". Tejo is a traditional game where 2kg weights are thrown ... read more

Obviously, before leaving Colombia I had to do something epic. Apart from one week in Semana Santa, I had only had long weekends to tour aroudn the country, so I deliberately finished all my commitments 2 weeks before my departure date, and decided that I wasn't going to leave the country with even one peso left - which is exactly what happened! Even before I went to Colombia, I knew that the main thing I wanted to do was to go on the 5 day hike to reach the Colombian Machu Pichu, an ancient Tayronan city descovered only in the 1970s and only accessible still by foot. I flew to Santa Marta, and from there met the guide who I had booked. At least that was the plan. In reality, obviously, Avianca (national airline) had lost ... read more

We arrived into santa marta with avianca who for a flight costing 40 quid and is ten times better than ryanair and this is south america. It was a very small airport we came into and both bags arrived this time which was a bonus and the customs point in the airport was pretty much non existent! We arrived at the dreamer hostel and it has been a really good point since we have been here...being lazy booking all the tours through the hostel. The next day was the start of the tour to ciudad perdida and in our group consisting of 4 germans, 3 americans, 1 dutch, 3 french and the 2 of us. This turned out to be a tough old hike across the jungle with lots of ups and downs and it was ... read more

There were two reasons that I slowly made my way north over the course of the year from the striking scenery of Patagonia to the sultry heat of Colombia: Firstly, each and every backpacker whom I have met in my two journeys through South America has spoken so effusively to me about the friendliness of Colombian people; secondly, to trek to ‘The Lost City’, known as Ciudad Perdida, located in the tropical jungle close to the coastline where the Colombian sands are lapped by the waters of the Caribbean Sea. Ciudad Perdida was only rediscovered in 1973 by a local from nearby Santa Marta (which is, incidentally, where the liberator Simon Bolivar took his last breath – I actually visited the room in which he spent his final days and ultimately died, with the room containing ... read more

Day 182 Tuesday 10th April Day one of the trek to Ciudad Perdida, trekking is a love/hate relationship and this one will be no different. The day did not start well when we went to pay the hotel bill our cards appeared not to work but after a few phone calls to the manager the lady discovered she was pressing a wrong key on the machine so after 10 minutes of worry it was all sorted out and we ran out the door. We had to meet at the Hotel Miramar where Guias-Baquianos Tours operates from at 9.00am, the group is small only two other people. The group is a Korean lady who has been working in Colombia for 12 months named Gina and a French man Tibo and two guides Luis Sr. and ... read more

NOT. Nog een uur bergop door wat je eerder als een rivierbedding kan beschouwen dan als een weggetje. Iedereen in jeep (en vooral degenen ... read more

I left Cartagena in the morning to go to Santa Marta. After the ride to the bus station, I decided to take the more luxurious bus for 25000COP as I was told the chicken type was 22000COP, so I figured for so little difference, it was worth getting the extra speed and comfort. As always, the air conditioning was on full blast and the temperature on the bus was definitely not high enough. Even with my fleece on, I was freezing and there was even a guy (another tourist) who was wearing his wholly hat. When we stopped for 10 minutes half way, I asked the driver if he could turn it down but he said he wasn't allowed and suggested I sat at the front as it would be warmer. That's what I did - ... read more

"This story needs to be read with deep and dramatic voice" :) It all started with roumours we heard about an archaeological site of an ancient city in Sierra Nevada called Ciudad Perdida (spanish for "Lost City") which is believed to have been founded about 800 AD. It was probably the region's political and manufacturing center of the people of Tairona which was apparently abandoned during the Spanish conquest. The people of Tairona have vanished from the surface of the world so till today the city was still a mystery. We did some research on the topic and came across an ancient map which seemed to be describing the way to the city. We arrived in Santa Marta in Colombia an contacted local experts for helping us find the "lost city". Our exhibition team was international ... read more
