weather wasnt looking too good when we awake so after a hearty breakfast(by that i mean it is so shit it must be doing my jam tart in) and decided to have a long drive north to a place called zapallar, most of the drive we had done before but after about an hour of driving through poor areas the countryside seem to liven up and when we startes to pass private estates you knew you were somewhere a lot more upmarket. Zapallar itself is a fantastic bay hemmed in by high hills with huge gaffs lining the hillside and everyone seems to have a few bob, the houses overlooking the beach were all german/swiss chalet types place built in 1945 and as you could pay for lunch in the restaurants with fillings i started to ... read more

decided to have a drive out further north as the weather wasnt too good this am ... quite a nice area but poor, we drove up to quintero which was ok and as the sun had come out we went to the beach at concon for a few hours on the way back, all the beaches here are absolutely choc a block and you cant swim in the sea as the waves are huge and when they break they drag everyone back in so everyone just paddles, had a swim at the hotel and then out to dinner, tried a local speciality dish which is like a bbq for 1 with everything on .... not recommended just piles of shit grub.... read more

I was lucky enough to spend my New Years 2010 in Buenos Aires, Argentina. It was wonderful and fun to explore and just walk around. A bit hot but not bad. Only thing missing was my hubby. He stayed back in Vina for the holiday and his whole family came to spend it with him. Enjoy the photos.... read more

Happy Birthday to Me! Yesterday was my 29th birthday! I had a wonderful day and wanted to share my photos of the day. The celebration started Friday night with a Illapu concert at the Teatro Municipalidad de Valparaiso. They use A LOT of instruments, guitar, bass, drums, various bongos, etc., flutes, traditional indian wind instruments. It's incredible the variety and expertise they each have. And what was really impressive is the fan base. They LOVE Illapu. Everyone was dancing and singing along. Such a great, cultural experience for me. And Carlos had a wonderful time too! ( I think he might have enjoyed my birthday present more than me. haha) This is some information about them that I got off of Wikipedia: prounounced ee-YAH-poo. The name comes from 'quechua' (an Andean language spoken in South America) ... read more

I arrived back in Vina del Mar at 11.30am on Monday 12 October and checked into a hotel near the bus station as I was only going to be staying for 2 days. After lunch, I went to the beach to enjoy the clear blue sky and hot sun. It was so nice to relax on the beach for a few hours after being in the bustling metropolis of Santiago for the weekend. In the evening I went for dinner before returning to the hotel to watch NY Jets Vs Miami Dolphins in the NFL Monday Night Football. I woke up at 11.30am on Tuesday and so missed breakfast but it was worth it for the great sleep I had in my huge double bed. It was an overcast day so unfortunately I never got to ... read more

I arrived in Vina del Mar at 6.30pm on Thursday 1 October after an 8 hour bus journey from Mendoza. From the bus station I took a taxi to Hotel Vancouver where I checked into my nice room with a big double bed, bathroom, balcony and cable TV. I walked straight to the beach (5 minutes) and sat on the rocks to watch a lovely sunset. Then I went for dinner before returning to my room to watch TV. After a good sleep, I went downstairs for my hotel breakfast and I tried to read some of the local paper. Then I went to the beach and walked along the front until I picked a spot where I lay for a few hours. The weather was great and it was such a nice feeling to be ... read more

I’ve just arrived back in Mendoza (home sweet home away from home) from some amazing spring break travels with some amazing people. Caitlin, Garrett, and I left Mendoza on the 17th of September. The Chilean “Independence” Day is the 18th of September. It was thus a whole weekend of party, party, and more party in Valparaíso, Chile where we stayed with Garrett’s extremely accommodating and all around epic friend, Justin Kunimoto. Although the only thing separating Chile and Argentina is the Andes mountain range, the two countries are very distinct. I found Valparaiso to be a much more laid back place than Mendoza with amazing graffiti, friendly locals, the ocean (!), a large youth population, and lots and lots of character. It seems to be the San Francisco of Chile! We linked up with some CC ... read more

Here are some fun pictures and videos from the Sept. 18th celebration here in Chile. We spent 3 days in Santiago with Carlos' family. We had a great time! FUN facts about Sept 18th: 1. The beginning of the Independence movement is traditionally dated as September 18, 1810 2. Chileans can ONLY fly their flag in Sept. If you don't fly it in Sept. , there is a fine. If you fly it in any other month, there is a fine (about $80). 3. Sept. 18th foods include: * empanadas * BBQ meat, anticucho (a chilean shish kebob) * mote con huesillo (cooked barley in a thick peach juice/sauce and a small dehydrated peach floating on top) * chicha (a really sweet, strong wine) * alfajor (a cookie sandwich with a caramel like filling called manjar, ... read more

Study Abroad Vina Del Mar Spring 2010 Hello, I am a student looking into studying abroad in Vina del Mar, Chile from late Feb-early july. I would appreciate ANY help, information, etc.... I am quite adventerous and want to really experience the culture (espescially some of the smaller towns away from Vina) I speak some spanish, but will be relying on my homestay and studies to improve..Some of my main questions/concerns are: - TRAVEL -- best bus routes/apprx costs compared to US dollar/entry requirements to other countries, cheap airfare from the US to Santiago?? - MONEY -- if I were to teach english lessons (or if anyone has other ideas for some cash?) would I need a different kind of Visa? - WEATHER -- If I am correct, it will be fall/winter ...what kind of temps to ... read more
