Today….I rode the bus! Without an adult. For the first time. I even had to say almost 10 words to the bus driver! The bus here is called the “Micro”. Many of you know that this is much more than a baby step for me. I don’t even like to order by myself at Subway….in English. This is just one of 3 or 4 peculiar phobias that I hope to conquer during my stay in Chile ☺. As of last night, I can also now communicate with folks here in Chile por teléfono. Another giant leap for Rachel. I haven’t successfully made a phone call yet, but we’re taking baby steps here, remember? In other news, I was in the news! I returned from the movie theater tonight (Harry Potter for the 2nd time) only to ... read more

I LOVE my Chilean family the Olivares. When I first walked in their house they had a banner hanging that said ¡Bienvenidos Brenna! in the colors of the Chilean flag accompanied by balloons and an exquisite bouquet of flowers. I live with mi mama Edita, mi abuela Ana y mi hermano Rodrigo. They are all incredibly kind and speak no english, except for Rodrigo who knows a few random words. My room is very small but has everything I could need. They also have a dog named Donna and a water turtle left from a past student named peanut butter (la mataquilla de mina, is very rare and expensive here). Edita also gave me a cell phone left from a past student, ¡es perfecto! They feed me three meals a day and each one is delicious! ... read more

To be utterly honest, chili has nothing to do with this post. It just fit so well. Chilly and Chile, however, have everything to do with this post. Let’s start with Chilly. Although I do not have ready access to a thermometer, I think it safe to say that it is approximately 60 degrees outside. Not bad for the winter, and with the sun shining, down right beautiful. The methods of heating houses are slightly different here though. They use an “estufa” (space heater) to heat the house. Unfortunately this method is not exactly what I’d call efficient. Needless to say, my toothpaste and chapstick are rather difficult to squeeze out of their tubes. Silver lining: new appreciation for warm showers. Now for Chile. ¡Que linda! This phrase sums it up. Beautiful! The sea is ... read more

So we did indeed go to the club and boy was it a wild night. It was Aldo’s birthday and he wanted to buy a bottle himself but I told him that I don’t care how they do it in France, when it’s a man’s birthday he doesn’t buy his own drinks so I tossed the old Bank of America Platinum Black card down with some serious buying power and we proceeded to dance the night away. I try to watch my money while travelling but as Mattcam put it, that’s just a reckless disregard for my money which is so true. There were a lot of really hot girls at this club and we were in VIP so I figured that we’d be able to talk to some of them or at least make some ... read more

We left Santiago at 11am and took a 2 hour bus to Viña del Mar. First impressions were not brilliant, bit scruffy. We headed out of the bus station in search of our hostel by foot- it only seemed a small walk from the station. Half an hour and 18 hills later we arrived all sweaty to the hostel. We checked in then headed out for a walk. Bearing in mind Viña is on the coast and we were hoping for some beach time, it was 10 degrees and actually quite cold so we walked up the coast, stopped for a coffee then wandered around some more for a couple of hours taking photos etc. Actually not much happening in Viña, maybe because its the low season, maybe because it was cold, I don´t know but ... read more

Survived my first weekend! Enjoyed some pina coladas and a blended drink made with chiramoya, only my favourite fruit. Yum. The weather treated us nicely, after a tsunami scare and it was awesome to dip my toes in the ocean! Yay, ocean! ... read more

Apparently, The most dangerous thing to watch out for in Chile are spiders, in . The Two to watch out for are the black widow which is commonly known worldwide but the real nasty bugger is the Chilean recluse. its bites cause renal failure, fever and eventual death. They live INSIDE dweelings and in bedsheets so shaking out cloths is a must! Im getting renal failure thinking of them! Had a good day yesterday in Viña del Mar area. We went there by bus for lunch with Estéban, Jané and Vicénte but we ended up spending all day with them, touring through Viña, Reñaca and Con Con including a visit to a restaurant right on the coast. It´s literally built onto the rocks and has crashing surf outside the huge West facing windows. We all had seafood chowders or soups, and the food arrived still boiling in the ceramic bowls. They heat the bowls in the oven before putting the soup in. The food and company was excellent and to top it off, the Chilean Air Force´s acrbatic flying team put on a great show in front of the beaches in the area. We had perfect seats for that . We watched the show to ... read more

Right, no internets for the past few days so its catchup time. Im going to post the first Vino Entry up here and the second tomorrow... I'm walking around town carrying a packet of dried dogfood. Niamh has taken it upon herself to feed every stray dog in Vina del Mar. One of the things that strikes you about South American cities that there are dozens upon dozens of stray dogs wandering around. The Latino tradition of machismo extends right down to the animals and the concept of chopping off the wandering dogs plumbing is seen as a big no no. You'll see dogs swill sunning themselves on the shopping streets, whole packs lying out in public parks and should you make eye contact with one it will potter along after you hoping to score a ... read more
