Our Wednesday plans revolved around the Bellavista area of town. The last two times I had been in town I had been unable to go to the Cerro San Cristotal, which is part of the Parque Metropolitano, because the park workers had been on strike. This hillside has an outstanding view of the City, although Wednesday morning the pollution was bad and the view of the mountains was not clear. It has not rained in a few days, and it takes some rain to clear the air, and the view. Anyway, we first parked at Patio Bellavista, which is one of those several levels open air type Malls with tons of restaurants, and shops. From there we walked towards the Cerro San Cristobal, but first made a small detour to visit La Chascona. This is the ... read more

Our last few days in Chile were spent with family in Santiago. And what a city it is..... 6 Million(ish) people, crazy congestion, chaotic traffic, pollution to clog your pores, all sprawled across a valley in the shadow of the Andes... We had some lovely nieces to catch up with and a new baby great nephew to meet, and a little time left to see the sights. But what we saw was quite special. Wednesday night in Barrio Bellavista was a highlight. Bellavista is kind of like a Fitzroy, Newtown or Northbridge (for Aussies) but with a multiplier to suit such a big city..... There was music and street arts, a humming little cafe scene, buskers aplenty, a jazz concert sponsered by the European Union on the Patio, painting lessons and lots of Santiaguinos soaking up ... read more

Unusually and inconveniently we arrived in Santiago during the early evening. Our normal routine of travelling overnight by bus has three advantages; your accommodation is essentially free, everything’s open when you arrive and the street signs/landmarks are clearly visible. Luckily, Santiago is as urbanised as you can get in South America. Rather than negotiating with local taxi drivers and dusty unmarked lanes we negotiated the metro and pedestrian crossings. Finding our hostel with relative ease we unloaded our bags and headed out for pizza. The pizza place, literally around the corner, was a hangout for the local skaters. It operated in a Starbucks ‘give us your name’ style. Apparently, in order to order from this place you also had to have the right name. Lake had no chance. ‘Que nombre?’, ‘Rebekah’, said Rebekah, ‘No, que nombre?!’, ... read more

I have been in South America a few days now, so it’s about time I did the first blog for this trip. On Sunday I left Sydney, bound for Santiago. The flight went fine, but ultimately uneventful. I didn’t get much sleep, but I did get a little bit. It was strange to be landing at 11:30am on the same day that I had left Sydney at 9:30am! I was met at the airport by a lady named Carol, who works for the travel company handling all of my Chile stuff. She was lovely and we had a fun talk on the way to my hotel. I had booked two nights at the W Santiago. It was expensive, but my travel agent had recommended it because of the rooftop bar with a view of the Andes. ... read more

Geo: -33.4691, -70.642Day 4 -- October 25 After breakfast we boarded our Tauck coach for a tour of Santiago. Amazingly, there was a minimum of repetition with yesterday's tour. We moved swiftly to the north, passing along/through embassy row, and viewing the rather imposing and contemporary US Embassy. Then we headed up into the hills where elegant homes valued in the millions feature lush landscaping and elevated views of the city. Our guide, Bernado, is a wealth of statistics. On the way back down the hill, he shared a lot of background with us:17.8 million people live in Chile6.8 million in Santiago52 independent counties in Santiago59% Roman Catholic In 1960, the strongest earthquake in history struck Chile and caused destruction to almost all of the country's Spanish ... read more

Geo: -33.4691, -70.642Day 3 ~ October 24I love it when a plan comes together. After much discussion and many options, our plan for the day came together over breakfast. We took a 9:30 excursion on Turistik, a hop-on hop-off tour of Santiago ($34). We strolled along a parkway with many wonderful contemporary sculptures and hopped on a double decker bus for a supposedly 2-hour tour of Santiago. OK, so it lasted 3 hours due to noon-time traffic, but who's counting? We drove along wide thoroughfares and passed places like: • “Sanhattan”, a section of SANtiago that resembles ManHATTAN• Hotel Intercontinental and its living wall (exterior is a texture of live plants) … a technique used abundantly here• Parque Arauco, one of Latin America's most important malls• Beautifully landscaped sides streets, university campuses and sculpture... read more

Geo: -33.4691, -70.642Day 2 ~ October 23 It's 86 degrees F as I write. And this is early spring? Wow.Our flight landed on time, and our stroll through Customs and Immigration was relatively painless. We were met by a Tauck representative and the three of us were shuttled to the Ritz-Carlton Santiago in the business district. A beautiful hotel, to say the least. We were met by a Ritz manager who welcomed us to the hotel and wished us a happy anniversary. She said that they would like to invite us to have brunch on them in honor of our big day. How nice. I asked if Barcy could come along and they cordially agreed. So off to the dining room we went where Patrick had his favorite – eggs Benedict – and Barcy and I ... read more

Santiago street markets (feria) are twice a week in most of the barrios ('burbs) in the city. You will only ever live a few streets from one, and it's a regular chance to buy fresh veges, meat and seasonal produce, often straight from the grower. You get what's picked that day, and trade is brisk and goodheartedly competitive, with a fascinating cast of characters. It's a social event as well, and lots of fun. We visit a few with Carmen, and she knows the stallholders and fellow shoppers, as they're her neighbours. She loves to show off her daughter and the odd gringo who carries the strawberries. It takes longer to shop because of the social connection and her laughter is infectious. Though I can't follow much of what is said, it clearly brightens everyone's day. ... read more

Arrived in Santiago around midday on a warm and dusty day. Weird to arrive on the same day as we took off, after 12 hours wedged between my beloved and a sleeping Puma. Yes, we shared our flight with the Argentinian Rugby Union team, who are actually smaller than they look on TV. Their saving grace might be they look bloody fit..... but rugby in soccer-mad South America? It's the game they play in heaven.... It was a cloudless day coming into town so the Andes were in full show, with a dusting of snow on the peaks. Santiago is close to some of the highest peaks in the range, a few over 5000m, so on a good day you feel like you're snuggled under the mountains. In Santiago, the Andes are constant presence and a ... read more
