Another early start - today we cross the border from Argentina into Chile. We´re all ready, by the bus, except one of the Italians, Juliano. Unfortunately he´s got to dry his hair, brought the hair dryer and everything. So we wait, and learn a little more about the ranch instead. It´s 27,00 hectares, with lots of sheep (MerinoX), which they breed for fine wool and meat. There´s a few cows, and 70 odd horses for working. They started rural tourism to earn some money, after a horrendous snow storm in 1996, which left the place covered in over 1m of snow for almost 2 months. Almost all the animals died, so they have had to rebuild and try other methods of earning money to attempt to get back the stock they had then. They´re still trying ... read more

Ushuaia: having bought hats and gloves we went to explore Tierra del Fuego national park. Spent the day looking for beavers, spotting birds and wildlife related activities. Walked along the coast of the Beagle channel, trying to keep on the move as temperatures were on the chilly side. We also visited a museum on the indigenous population of the area and what globalisation and the arrival of the ´white´man had done to them. Kept our heads down!! Spent a lot of time keeping our head down - Ushuaia generally not all that happy about the Islas Malvinas/Falklands situation. Planning something big for 2007 apparently. Watch this space. As we could not bear the trip back to Rio Gallegos we headed straight into Chile to a place called Punta Arenas. It hasn´t got a great reputation but ... read more

Yes, yes, backdated again. It´s hard to catch up, as our whirlwind schedule provides scant opportunity for trips to the internet cafe. As for current events, we are in Bariloche, Argentina for two days followed by (hopefully) a trip to Pucon, Chile, to climb a volcano. But that will wait for another time. So, where were we? After getting our backpacks ready and gathering the necessary food, it was off to Parque National Torres del Paine to hike the Circuito Grando, a 143 km trek around the best features of the park. Since there are still no pictures posted, I can´t actually show you what it was like, but you can look up pictures in any number of places. The bus went to the park with a quick stop, at which the Patagonian wind first reared ... read more

The Navimag ferry dropped me a day late in Puerto Natales, Chilean Patagonia. Said my goodbyes to new friends and headed into town looking for the quickest route back into Argentina (travellers in Chile are always on there way out of the country, too damn expensive). Turns out everyone from the Navimag is doing the same...I spend the next hour having loads of awkward moments you've said goodbye and good luck then meet 10mins later, do you stop for more conversation, just say hi or even ignore them. Tough tough decisions for that time of the morning. Anyhow turns out the next bus to Argentina is tomorrow, I find a hostel, its full of Navimagers buzzing around getting ready for trekking Torres Del Paine. I'm now at a loose end, chatting with a few people and ... read more

OK, so it´s been a while since I´ve updated this. Currently, we are in Puerto Natales and have been in the area since the 4th, so I´ve backdated this entry to reflect the date the events should have occurred, had time permitted. If you would just care to read about our hike in Torres del Paine, you can skip ahead to the next entry. So, when last I wrote, we had just returned from a short trip to Iguazu Falls and were in Buenos Aires waiting to catch our first overnight bus, with the final destination of Puerto Madryn, a smallish seaside town near the Valdes Peninsula, known for it´s wildlife viewing. The bus trip was uneventful and we arrived in Puerto Madryn around lunch time. We took a taxi to our hostel, which was ... read more

"There were Giants, in the earth in those days." (Genesis 6:4) Early reports from the first European explorers in the land at the end of the world, in the very south of the Americas suggested that there were giants. It is these giants that gave Patagonia its name. The Tehuelches people, although not giants, were very tall and well built. It is the first meetings with these indigenous people that gave rise to the tales of giants. There is though, some dispute about the origin of Patagonia as the name for the province. Both versions though are about the Tehuelches. One version of the story says that Patagonia owed its provenance to the fact that the early European explorers thought that the Tehuelches had very big feet. This might be more to do with the ... read more

Had a lovely 2 days in the Chilean resort of La Serena - campsite approx 100m from beach :-) Nightlife quite lively there, including a club called Kamikaze - sounds like it is probably a good thing I didnt actually make it there in the end, due to it being very expensive and me having no ID on me. They asked every single person for ID, even those in their 40s! Funny. Instead we went to another bar where they had karaoke and myself and Urvi gave a fine rendition of Dancing Queen - well we thought so anyway. Turned out it was a competition (we had no idea!) and another girl in the group (Kate) won, based on the rest of us clapping really loudly when her name was called out! Not the biggest prize ... read more
