After a bit on yet another bus, the four of us (Scott, Cody, Sean and I) arrived in Puerto Natales. We were harrassed immediately upon disembarking from the bus by several individuals with flyers for hostals trying to sell us on staying with them. We ended up going home with Patty, a woman with an open fly and high heels that bowed her legs out when she walked. Wouldn´t you? Patty´s house was a real dive; thin, barely held together walls, water leaking from the ceiling, cold water only in a town that was cold in and of itself. Would you have stayed there? No, of course not. Did we? Of course we did. It was only $4. We debated in her living room for 10 minutes, mostly about the safety of our things that we ... read more

each day began with a gentle awaking to the sounds of rushing water, the rustle of birds in the trees and little critters running through dry leaves, small whispers of wind blowing through the leaves, and the muffled noises of other campers starting to surface from their tents and mobilize for the day's hike. it was normally very cold in the mornings and evenings, so the wool cap, gloves, and fleece were immediately thrown on as we crawled from the tent and into the daylight and fresh air of the Torres Del Paine national park. my morning ritual (so predictable for anyone who has spent any time with me at all) was a beeline over to the nearby bubbling fresh glacier water, a dip of the nalgene container, a transfer into our little steel cooking pot, ... read more

Ok I lie a bit because I am writting this from an Argentinan locutorio on the 21st...I left Chile sunday morning with a bus from Puerto Natales to El Calafate where I am still in...until 3 am time of the next bus for Bariloche where I will be 32 hours later!!!! Anyway this page deserve to be under the Chilian flag as Torres del Paine is just outstanding. First the road from Puerto Natales to the National Park is just a track of 150 kms through the endless plain surrounded by mountains and filled with nothing, sheeps, and wind. It is increbible the strenght of this wind...when you arrive at the park, a small lake with flamingoes and a navette to the beginning of the trek. The trek, called the "W", because it consists in climbing ... read more

Southern Patagonia may well have been the perfect place for us… coupled with the beautiful scenery of endless lakes, tiny islands and snow-capped mountains we really were in penguin heaven. We couldn’t turn a corner without catching sight of more penguin paraphernalia - they even used giant cuddly penguins as mannequins in shop windows! But alas, we had to participate in some non-animal related things too (honestly we’re not hiding out in London zoo!) Patagonia is trekkers' heaven so we thought we'd better give it a go too, our first taste was in the Tierra del Fuego National Park (in Argentina), which, naturally, is abundant with lakes, islands and mountains. Our walk was round one of the lakes, through woods and past some fantastic scenery. Our plan was to reach the beaver colony (they have beavers ... read more

Have returned safely from spending two weeks trekking round the beautiful and rugged Torres Del Paine national park in the far south of Chile. I thought I´d put down a few general ramblings about my time, both in the park and Patagonia generally, and let you know a few of the highlights rather than go for a blow-by-blow account of what I got up to. Should get some pictures from the trek online in a couple of weeks time so the descriptions will hopefully make more sense then!! Firstly, Chile has been, well chilly. I guess the clue should have been in the name. Its also the windiest place I think i've ever been and, helpfully, it is often both very chilly and very windy - at the same time. Being the slightly fair-weather travel that ... read more

Here I am in Chile and it is raining. Except this detail, it is just great! I started the weekend in a bus for going from Ushuaia to Punta Arenas and consequently leaving Argentina (I'll be back!) for Chile. Saterday in a bus means no rugby, which is obviously better for the French team! Punta Arenas! There is nothing to say about this town except that it is on the Magellan straight and there is othing and nobody there...ok it was over the weekend (even the city museum is closed on Sunday) but there was a nice little market on the main square where I bought a hand knitted "bonnet" that still smell the sheep from where the wool is coming from. There is a paper here that had a title: What is beautiful is alive ... read more

Nearly the end of the world, Punta Arenas actually feels worse than Ushuaia. After a tough 12 hours bus ride in rainy weather (meaning that we couldn't even SEE anything and who's read the homepage knows what that means to me!!), we got to Punta Arenas round about Chile's Dinnertime (so that's about 10.00 pm). I had been too lazy to book accomodation ahead of time and I wasn't worried either since Punta Arenas didn't seem to be a major destination; I was tired and didn't care too much anyway so that I was quite happy to plod along with the first hawker that grabed me. And so I happened to end up in a quite filthy (but really cheap) place just outside the city centre. For the first time I actually HAD to speak spanish, ... read more

Punta Arenas Just a quick one because people keep asking to see photos of where we have been living and volunteering for the last month. First things first, where are we? Punta Arenas is in Chilean Patagonia. Punta Arenas is a very pleasant town of about 125,000 inhabitants hugging the shores of the Straits of Magellan. Its origin back in the 19th century was as a trading port mostly for wool and as a fuelling stop for the steamers on their way around Cape Horn. Around its main square are beautiful colonial mansions in a European style, think Paris and London. In the centre of the square is a bronze statue of Magellan and some native indians which you may recognize from Michael Palin´s Pole to Pole programme. This is the place where he waited for ... read more

Today we must be on the bus by 8am, so that we arrive at the base of our trek by 10am, so that we can climb for 4-5hrs, have lunch, descend in 3hrs, back on the bus for 2hrs, and supper at 8.30pm. Exhausted? So was I. The weather held from yesterday, and today we can see the Torres without a hint of cloud from the hotel / Estancia in which we are staying, on the edge of the Park. We leave almost on time, and the drive to the park takes us past a rock with a huge bird sitting on it. And not just any bird, but the largest flying bird in the world - the Andean Condor. We stop and take photos from the bus, and as we open the doors to get ... read more
