Torres del Paine
First day of the trekit's hard to get there but whao it's worth it with this green lake... Ok I lie a bit because I am writting this from an Argentinan locutorio on the 21st...I left Chile sunday morning with a bus from Puerto Natales to El Calafate where I am still in...until 3 am time of the next bus for Bariloche where I will be 32 hours later!!!!
Anyway this page deserve to be under the Chilian flag as Torres del Paine is just outstanding. First the road from Puerto Natales to the National Park is just a track of 150 kms through the endless plain surrounded by mountains and filled with nothing, sheeps, and wind. It is increbible the strenght of this wind...when you arrive at the park, a small lake with flamingoes and a navette to the beginning of the trek.
The trek, called the "W", because it consists in climbing up and down 3 valleys of the park in 4 and half days. The first day, after a short path to reach the bottom of the montain, it goes up 1h20 to reach the refuge where I will sleep the first night. It is up, steep and the wind is blowing in gusts you can hear coming...with the backpack, it is sometime quit
Lago
Second day, landscapes are so... hot on narrow paths! First day, first mistake: I don't let my backpack at the refuge and continue my way up through forrests, rivers, and morraine!!!That's where I realized the first mistake mentioned before!!! But when you arrive at the base de las Torres, it is just fabulous: a lake green and those towers of stone above...you'll see on the pictures! When I returned to the refuge after 5h30 of hiking, on one leg...I thought...hopefully tomorrow should be easier...but 4.5 days like this, I will never make it! After the best shower of the past 10 years, I was a little more positive, and after the dinner shared with a japoneese woman and three americans I was just ready for going to bed (it was 21h30!).
On the next morning, my legs were in a pretty good shape (it seems they were forgiving me!), and after a breakfast I shared with a canadian (quebecois) I left the refugio with Nikki who was doing the "W" as well. This collaboration lasted for 10 minutes as Nikki had forgotten her water bottle in the refugio! I waited for her a little later and we finished this easy day together in the
next refuge. For dinner I was sitting next to Dutchs (Patrick and Manon) and 2 Englishs and an American from New York City joined the table. Those three (Sarah, Steve and Matt) were doing the "W" as well and we spent the rest of the week together, hiking, joking, playing cards (with forks and mayonnaise...) and other games, dining, drinking wine from a box (the french guy I am is not really pround of this one!), Goto Negro is its name... But most of all we enjoyed the Valley of the French, Glaciar Grey and all the beautiful landscapes, the blue or green lakes, the walls of water created by the wind, rainbows, waterfalls....etc. It was a really good moment and at the end we walked something like 75 kms in mountains!!!! A pizza, sign of the return to civilization, (pasta and food poisoning for Sarah) and we said goodbye. I had a bus to catch for El Calafate on the 19th. Once arrived, a weird taste of loneliness increased by problems of buses and requirement of changes in plans. A good Biffe de Chorizo (I am back to Argentina after all!) and everything is back on track...Yesterday Laundry, 2
Glaciar Grey - The Team
We spent 4 days together in the park and it was a very good time... but where is Nikki? hours queueing for arranging my bus to Bariloche and....I bumped into Sarah and Steve at the bus station and we just had time for a quick lunch as they were flying to Ushuaia and into Marc (the quebecois we already bumped into during the week!) at the backpacker...el mundo es un pueblito and Perito Moreno glaciar is fantastic...
The border
To go back to Argentina, the border near Puerto Natales is just in the middle of nowhere!
Perito Moreno
Perito Moreno 2
The color and the shape...it could be from Gaudí or George Lucas...it's just The Nature sens un peu seul (egalement) en arrivant dans cette ville d'ou je me rends compte qu'il est difficiule de partir.
