Andrew here... we felt that I should write this one, given that I had a wicked grin from ear to ear for most of our trek. We were finally going to be in the Patagonian mountains!!!! The trekking guide for this area was the first book I bought when we started to plan our year long trip... it was one of the destinations that I was most looking forward to. We got off the bus at the Argentina-Chile border, and were almost blown off our feet. This was our first taste of the incredible winds that hammer the region for most of the year. We had heard some second hand reports of guys having to crawl along the trail, which worried Jen a little. A little wind, I thought... how much of a problem could it ... read more

It was the last day and I awoke at 4am in a room without electricity. The past 4 days had been spent trekking the W through Torres Del Paine, a spectacular national park in southern Chile. My shoes told the story of the many kilometres we had walked up and down seemingly never ending hills, across waterfalls, up rock faces, through muddy forrest and slippery gravel. Whilst the track is quite arduous, the everchanging views of mountains, lakes, forrest, glaciers and waterfalls kept your mind off your aching feet and the knowledge that you absolutely had to make it to the next camp before the sun went down kept you moving. The idea is to carry your own camping gear and be totally self sufficient setting up camp near the refugios located sparingly throughout the ... read more

Sitting at the computer now in El Calafate, 2 days after my return from hiking the circuit in Torres del Paine, I find myself at a loss for words. I spent 7 days hiking in the most beautiful place I have ever been in my life. Torres del Paine. When you look on the map at the approximately cicular path you will hike over the course of a week all you see is a little dotted line crossing the contours and the blue lines of rivers and circling the dots of the peaks of mountains. I had not even the slightest idea of everything I would see during my week in the park. There were soaring towers of granite, snow capped mountains, aquamarine lakes, hanging glaciers, huge moraines, quiet forests, moss covered rocks, waterfalls, trickling ... read more

This was what the mammoth bus trip had been in aid of: trekking in the world famous and extremely beautiful Torres Del Paine national park. We were just scraping in at the end of the season but the bonus to this was that we were able to pick up a load of cheap second hand equipment to buy rather than waste money hiring stuff. Fully kitted out with tent, sleeping bags, roll mats and an alcohol cooking burner that I'd made out of two beer cans we were set. Our bags were pretty heavy but it was largely because we had to carry sufficient food for 7 days; we only took one change of clothes - didn't see the point in taking any more as we wouldn't have access to a shower anyway! We took ... read more

To access Torres del Paine national park we are based in a small town called Puerto Natales. Its totally ramshackle and when we first arrived we thought our hostel was part of the local shanty town. Surprisingly the buildings are better than they look on the outside and we are actually living in reasonable comfort - hot water showers at least - you always have to put the toilet paper in the bin… most attractive and adding to the relationship building experience… We also got our first bloody good breakfast. Having been used to a couple of crappy croissants and coffee in Argentina, we were ecstatic to get cereal, yoghurt, omelettes and homemade bread. We have found a good café which does fantastic vegetarian food. You might be surprised to find us carnivores there but ... read more

Travelling is a dirty business. Literally. This pair of cargo-trousers that I am wearing went about with me in South Africa, then Argentina san wash, now they are expected to do the treks of Torres Del Paine. They do not look dirty but if you know what they have been through you would not even pick them up with your toes. This is what I hate about trekking - no access to my entire clean wardrobe. Ohwell, so long as they do not look dirty, that is fine. And looks is what that counts. After 4 hours of bumpy ride from El Calafate, I arrived at the Parque Nacional Torres Del Paine. This is apparently South America's finest national park and is also a trekker's paradise. A paradise? I am not all that sure. The ... read more

On the evening of the 16th we meet all our new travelling companions. 29 of them. And we have to put up with them for 21 days until we reach Santiago. Mostly it is a great bunch. When we left Ushuaia we went travelled to Torres del Paine in Chile. On the way there we did some 'bush' camping. We stopped at 7:30 in the evening in the twilight, at an abandoned estancia (ranch). All of us pitched our tents in the buildings to shelter us from the dreadful wind. One group made a stir fry dinner while the rest of us looked at the stars. It was wonderful to see the Southern Cross again. We drank lots of wine to try and warm up. We were next to the ocean and there were 2 shipwrecks ... read more
