We arrived on the Chilean side of Patagonia, got out our hiking shoes, packed our backpacks with our tents, gas cooker and sleeping bags and left the hairdryer behind for five days in Torres Del Paine National Park. Our time spent in southern Chilean backcountry was great and we enjoyed hiking beside tall mountain peaks, glacial lakes, glaciers, pristine rivers and lush valleys. We walked for 5 days - which I think is an impressive feat for a very unfit pregnant woman! Admittedly it was made a lot easier by the husband who could carry most of the weighty objects as well as pretty fancy campsites to stay in. Most people that venture to the park do either day hikes or what has become known as the 'W' (a 5 day hiking route)... we spent five ... read more

Happy 2008 to you all! On Boxing Day, we crossed back into Argentina, heading further south to Bariloche, another picture postcard tourist town situated in the heart of Argentina's lake district. We were treated to wonderful views of lakes, mountains, and meadows of flowers by the roadside. Crossing the Chile-Argentina border was memorable because we ended up playing table tennis in the middle of a national park whilst waiting for the rest of the group to get their passports stamped - clearly, sporting equipment is an important part of securing one's national borders. Bariloche resembles a Swiss town with its chalets and lakeside setting - it is also famous for chocolate and St. Bernard dogs, which loll around the main square waiting to be photographed with the tourist hoards. It was a good choice for our ... read more

After returning from Antarctica we were completely exhausted, and so took a few days to just relax in Ushuaia. Our time there was spent mostly eating, sleeping and getting ready for Christmas. A couple of days into our stay Josh and Melanie (who we had previously met in Buenos Aires and Montevideo) turned up in our hostel and we decided to spend Christmas together. We ended up having a great Christmas Day (my first ever away from Wales!) which was significantly helped by Melanie´s (French) knowledge of cooking. Tasty chicken, plenty of other bits of pieces, wine and champagne - delicious. Despite the celebrations we were awake very early on Boxing Day (26th December to those not from the UK!) to catch a bus for the long journey across the border and into Chile. It turned ... read more

Having passed more salt flats and ascending the andes once more over some very interesting hairpin bends (having to stop every now and then to let our steaming truck Jack cool down!), we had the joy of yet another less than speedy border crossing. Upon arrival at the Chilean border all bags had to be lugged off the truck, all lockers emptied and everything was generally prodded (they even probed our Santa on the front of the truck!). It is worth noting at this point that the Chileans are most unrepresentative of the rest of South America due to their love of rules, regulations, receipts and petty bureaucracy, or do they have particularly good relations with Argentina. Plus they have a penchant for speaking Spanish at a million miles per hour incorprating utterly different terms and ... read more

Christmas in Fireland After returning from Antarctica we spent six days in Ushuaia, including Christmas Day. These six days were probably the laziest of the trip so far - we managed a grand total of two hikes and visited only one museum. Most people from our cruise had immediately left Ushuaia, though Valery, our Zodiac driver, was still around, as he had another trip on December 26th, so we met up with him on two consecutive nights in The Galway or "The World's most Southern Irish Bar" as it liked to call itself. Such a claim makes you think it's a long was to the next Irish bar, but there was another one, The Dublin, only half a block north! The only Irish thing about The Galway was the prices, but in a town short of ... read more

We decided to do the whole Torres del Paine circuit, which takes usually 8 days. When we found out how much food we need to carry, we decided to buy food only for app. 4-6 days. we had some nice days and also some rainy on the trek. But anyway we had very nice views - we saw 3 glaciers, valleys full of flowers, snowcaped mountains, we had to cross one windy pass and carry pretty heavy backpacks :) It was demanding, but very beautiful. We were happy to finish the circuit and enjoy this beautiful scenery. Happy not to do just the shorter W - circiut. V Puerto Natales nas hned pri autobuse odchytila teta nadhanacka a zaviezla do svojho hostela El Mirador - pekneho asi 15 minut od centra. Kupili sme si sampanske - ... read more

Torres del Paine or the towers of blue. This are an iconic part of Patagonia. 3 spires of granite rock that some crazy guy scaled all 3 of them in 51 hours. In the Patagonia weather that is no mean feet. One day the weather is nice, sky blue no wind, picture perfect. 3 hours later its frickin freezing as the wind picks up to 60km/hr bringing horizontal rain on the verge of snow and this is all in the summer! We arrived in Torres del Paine National Park at about 9am in the morning. The perfect day, the sun was shining, there was a breeze but not to strong. I felt justified in my decision to save on space and leave the long pants at home. It won´t be that cold. Once we set up ... read more

Doch ... read more

10 years ago travellers would beg the captain of the Navimag to let them travel the 1500km journey through the Patagonian fjords from Puerto Montt to Puerto Natales on board his cargo boat. Now you can book online, pay a lot of US dollars and get a bunk, full board and even use of a bar on board what is still primarily a cargo ship. Notorious for delays due to severe weather the Evangelista actually set sail in blazing sunshine only a couple of hours late with perfect views of the majestic Osorno Volcano. A couple of hours later the sun set behind the islands of Chiloe and the Andes to our left were bathed in a beautiful mauve light. This, I assure you, is not a regular occurance in Patagonia. The four days were spent ... read more

Patagonia. Incredible. Another intercontinental overnighter takes us from New York to Miami, then Santiago and then further south to Punta Arenas. Definitely a trip of transitions, north to south, 12 degrees warmer (relief for Annette). Miami was the cross-over point where Spanish superceded English, and Santiago, Chile, was the point where everything could be seen in a new light - literally. Flying over the incredible Andes, this huge crumple on the earth's crust of which we would be exploring the southern regions, seems to bring with it a different quality of air and even with the inevitable fumes of an international airport, the clarity if vision was something to remark. The end of our journey was the town of Puerto Natales where we stayed in a wonderful hospedaje Hostel Dickson with the lovely Flor and her ... read more
