Entering Patagonia was like being on another planet. The skies were bluer, the mountains higher, the winds windier and the animals saucier and fearless. Leaving Puerto Arenas, the southern most town in Chile, I got my first glimpse of the Straights of Magellan. It gives me chills to see things I only read about in my elementary school geography book or heard as a query on 'Jeopardy'. But there they were bluer than cobalt and throwing up whitecaps like a can-can dancer waving her skirt. Before I go on I have to tell you about the wind in Puerto Natales. We had stopped to have lunch at a sheep ranch, known as an 'estancia'. Getting out of the bus, dressed in as many layers as I could load on, I thought I was well prepared (afterall ... read more

Well, we returned yesterday from a five day trek on the ´W´circuit of the Torres del Paine national park. We originally planned on staying at the refugios (hostels) and eating in. But then we saw the prices and decided to rent camping equipment, cook our own food and stay in the free campsites wherever possible! Day 1: Trek to the glacier. The bus picked us up from our hostel at 7:30 Saturday morning to take us to the park. We bought our tickets to the park at the park entrance, from where we could see two of the famous peaks in the distance. The bus then took us to another stop where we had to wait for over an hour to take a (rip-off) catamaran across Lago Pehoe to where we planned to start our walk. ... read more

Hi welcome to our first Travel Blog, which we hope you enjoy. We are now in Puerto Arrenas, since our last email we have been exposed to all that Patagonia can throw at us - sun, snow, rain, wind and even more wind!Last week we arrived in El Calafate in Argentina, where we had the most amazing day walking with crampons on the Perito Moreno Gacier, along with walking in the adjoining forest and taking a cruise down the lake seeing bits of ice floating past. Whilst on the ice the ony view more spectacular than the one we saw, was the one around the corner. The hike reminded us of the old Baileys advert where he finishes by saying - You want Ice, You've GOT ice. The walk finished with a glass of whiskey overfresh ice ... read more

Hello from La Calafate, a very touristy town in Argentina a few hours from the border with Chile. The main street is full of souvenier and over priced outdoor gear shops - but the main reason people come here is for The Moreno Glacier. It's around 80km away and meant to be a real spectacle. I'm visiting it tomorrow - so there will be photos on the next blog. I´ve just arrived here from Puerto Natales, from where I did the famous "W trek" around the Torres del Paine national park. What an experience!! 6 days, 5 nights and almost 100km walking up and down steep valleys with some of the most stunning scenery you are likely to see anywhere in the world. I really fancied "walking the W" (sorry - that's backpacker speak!), but was ... read more

We arrived in Puerto Natales and arranged to do a tour around Torres del Paine national park. We had an early start as it was 2 hours away. The park was very beautiful but unfortunately because of the weather we could not see the 3 famous towers until later that afternoon when the sun came out. The mountains were totally different to the mountains we had seen before. There were valleys between the mountains and glaciers on them. They were pointed and very jagged in shape. For lunch we tried peanut butter and jam (jelly) sandwiches because we were with an american guy called Kelly. They were gorgeous!! The next day we boarded the Navimag ferry from Puerto Natales to Puerto Montt. It was a 3 day trip with beautiful views of the chilean islands and ... read more

We are now safely arrived in South America (Chile to be exact) and things are going well! We bid a sad farewell to everyone in Melbourne in mid-April as we set off on the next leg of our journey. The flight to Santiago wasn’t the best, but luckily the air smoothed out and we arrived safely in Santiago!! Hurrah!! We found Santiago to be a very chilled out city and a great place to start our South American travels. So far everyone has been very friendly and patient as we’ve struggled to get across what we need in Spanish. We're hindered mainly by the fact that we speak almost no Spanish. Our Spanish lessons have been a little delayed but we're on the case! Because not many people speak English we’re going to be submerged in ... read more

After a couple of great days in Ushuaia I had to make the hard decision to get back on a bus again, this time heading into Chile to try my luck again with mother nature and try to get to the infamous Torres Del Paine National Park. After only just catching the bus after being told to go to a different location and managing to get a seat as I had not booked a ticket I was off towards Chile. Mind you this was all 5am in the morning and all done in spanish so I was not doing too bad to get it sorted! So can´t remember how long the bus journey was but there was a change over and it would of consisted of a double figure amount of hous. After a couple ... read more

First off all thanks for all the comments as it is nice to keep in touch and as we write this we have only been travelling for 3 weeks but really it has seemed like months. We are a few weeks behind so excuse us as you may receive a few blogs together as we catch up. The other news is that Robert has had a very senior moment and deleted over 300 photos off the camera(1 day away from backing up - aaaaaagh), the good news is that we do have 2 cameras so all is not lost. The senior moment was done on the small camera and this is the one that we use for going out in the evenings so the interesting meals and the odd glasses off wine(yes odd as we ... read more

Torres Del Paine I arrived in Puerto Natales, Chile after a 15 hour bus ride from Ushuaia. The bus actually sat on a ferry and we crossed the Strait of Magellan. It was interesting. And very cold. After my travels here I don’t’ understand how the first explorers here survived. I came to Chile to enjoy Nacional Parque Torres Del Paine. I know I said Ushuaia was beautiful but the beauty here usurps that of fin del mundo. It’s a different kind of beauty; I normally wouldn’t associate bleak and desolate with beauty but this place manages to do just that. My friends and I were starting the “W” trail. It’s a 5 day circuit in the park that affords beautiful views of Torres Del Paine, especially at sunrise when sun hits the spirals and ... read more

After many weeks of fun and adventures, we finally left Argentina and headed for Chile. A scenic 5 hour bus ride from El Calafate to Puerto Natales found us on the West side of Patagonia. Puerto Natales is another small functional rural town, and like El Chalten it is beginning to close down for the season as the winter rolls in. It is a gorgeous little place sitting on a lake a couple of hours from the main attraction around here ¨Torres Del Paine National Park¨. This National Park is the home to some monster mountains and arguably the most stunning scenery in Patagonia. We passed a couple of days here getting kitted out for a serious adventure into the mountains. We planned to do the ¨W¨ - a 4 day hike around the mountains that ... read more
