Arriving in Easter Island (Rapa Nui to the locals, Isla de Pascua to the Chileans), I was once again greeted by a group of musicians playing traditional music, which was a wonderful way to set foot on the island. It is certainly a small place, as the plane seemed to be flying just above the water, then we were on the runway, before once again seeing water where we had to do an about face to head back to the 'terminal'. Whilst it may be a tiny outpost and one of the most, if not the most isolated inhabited island on the planet, it is rich in history and quite simply a wonderful place to be. I was met at the airport by the incredibly friendly and helpful hostess from the hostel I was staying at. ... read more

Hola, So we got up at the crack of dawn and went to the airport for our first flight in over a month. Where were we going you ask? Well, we were off to Rapa Nui or Isla de Pascua. Still trying to figure it out? How about its more famous named: Easter Island. It is 3760 kilometres away from anything, and is thus the most remote lace on earth. The flight was only 5 hours or so, and when we arrived we were gived leis by Camping Mihinoa and then they drove us to our hostel which was located on a penninsula overlooking the waves of the South Pacific crashing on to the rocks on the shoreline. We wandered the capital of Hango Roa, but it was Sunday and during siesta time so everything was ... read more

Wednesday 4.8.2010 day 294 Fly from Rapa Nui to Santiago We got up at 7:30 and took a packed bfast with us to Sunrise at Tongariki where there are 15 standing Moai. We took our quad bike with us and took the beach road so we could see the sun coming up all the way along it looked fantastic. When we got to Tongariki the sun was coming up over the hill not the ocean so we knew that we were not going to get the sunrise photos that we hope for, even though it still looked very nice with the sun coming though the Moai and reflecting on the hill behind. We had our bfast then headed back to town where we dropped off our quad bike and walked back to our accommodation had a ... read more

Tuesday 3.8.2010 day 293 Quad biking around Rapa Nui We woke up to the most fantastic sunrise and a beautiful sunny day so we headed to the markets and got some more freshly caught fish from the market this time we got a smaller fish about ½ k for about $5 Aus dollars. Then we walked to the bike shop and picked up our Quad Bike and got the same two helmets (including my very big one). We dropped the fish back home and took a packed lunch with us. We headed to Orongo were the bird man ritual were held and the site of a fantastic volcano creator. The bird man ritual started after they got rid of the heads so instead of leaders being born they now chose the braves and strongest men to ... read more

Monday 2.8.2010 day 292 Raining in the worlds navel The locals call Rapa Nui, ‘Te Pio o te Hemua’ the worlds navel. Today we had planned to get up early and take a packed bfats to Tongariki to see the sun rise but it rained all night and at sunrise there was a heavy downfall, so we decided to sleep in a little. We still had to take the scooter back at 10 am and we were going to exchange it for a quid bike but due to the rain we will do that tomorrow. On the way back from dropping the scoter my friend got talking to the locals about their right for independence and they want their tribal land back. They gave some land to the Chilean government to build a cultural centre but ... read more

South America » Chile » Easter Island » Hanga Roa August 1st 2010

Sunday 1.8.2010 day 291 Rapa Nui! (Polynesian), Easter Island! (English) Or Isla de Pascua! (Spanish), for a little island in the middle of nowhere why does it have 3 names? Easter Island is relatively small, just 117 sq km with just one small town called Hanga Roa, population 3800. The rest of the island is uninhabited except for hundreds of wild horses that roam free on the island and of course over 800 of the Moai statues that are scattered everywhere. We got up early and then went to church as I had read in our lonely planet that it is a mix of the Rapa Nui, Polynesian and Christian religion. It was very nice with lots of singing and there was a guy dresses in just a grass skirt there. We got there a bit ... read more

Saturday 31.7.2010 day 290 Fly from Santiago to Rapa Nui We had a 8:20 flight to Rapa Nui today so we got up early lucky we stayed in the Holiday Inn across from the airport the night before so we just had to walk across the road to the airport. When we woke up we saw that it was foggy and were worried about our flight. We got to airport and checked our bags in and then went to the service desk to see if we could change our flights back home to stop in NZ for a few days but they told us we had to call the office. We then went to security and then got another coffee each before going to the boarding lounge. When we got to the boarding lounge we noticed ... read more

South America » Chile » Easter Island » Hanga Roa July 29th 2010

There are places you wish to go, places which are so remote they hit our imagination, places we dream about...and than one day, we plan, we go. Easter Island is seriously high in the "remote" top list in the world. You can either take one of the 2 weekly flights from Tahiti with Lan, or take any of the daily flights from Santiago on Lan...even with those, it's still a flight just short of 5 hours on a 767. Easter Island have another appeal for us...it's a diver place too! What to see diving here you'll tell me. Well, not many fishes, the place is volcanic and with very very little plancton activity. So forget about anything big, or anything in big school of fishes. So why coming...well...for the same reason. In season, which is in ... read more

South America » Chile » Easter Island » Hanga Roa May 18th 2010

Hello all we are just back from 6 amazing days on Easter Island!! Easter Island is an incredible place and also one of the most isolated places on earth. It lies bang in the middle of the South Pacific and a staggering 3700km west of Chile, its nearest land mass. The island is famous for its huge statues called Moai´s. How the statues were created and moved to each of the corners of the island is still as big a mystery as how the islands first became populated by people because of the incredible isolation of the island. Easter Island is relatively small, just 117 sq km with just one small town called Hanga Roa, population 3800. The rest of the island is uninhabited except for hundreds of wild horses that roam free on the island ... read more

South America » Chile » Easter Island » Hanga Roa May 10th 2010

We built our whole round the world flight schedule around Easter Island. After 8 months on the move, we have seen quite a lot and are starting to get blase about some of the places we have been so that it gets to the point where high expctations are dashed quite easily. So it was fair to say that we were more than a little worried about having booked for a whole week on a tiny island in the Pacific Ocean. But before we get into our thoughts, a little geography lesson. Easter Island, though politically part of Chile, is very much part of Polynesia. It sits on the Pacific Plate and is made up from three separate volcanic eruptions which gave it a distinctive triangular shape. The Pacific Ocean is already rising up its shores, ... read more
