After no sleep we got our LAN flight to Easter Island. We had no sleep as someone rang the doorbell of our hostel at 3.30 in the morning and I was convinced it was our taxi, which was due at 6.30, so went running out to open the door. Looking back that was probably pretty stupid of me as it could have been anyone but luckily it was just another couple of backpackers trying to cheack in. Our LAN flight was amazing! We were on a proper aeroplane again, with movies and everything! We were so excited as the flight is about 6 hours long. We hadn´t booked anywhere to stay on the island as I thought it was better to turn up and get something when we arrived. We decided to stay at Chez Cecilia who ... read more

PÄÄSIÄISSAARI 2.-7.2.2010 Kirjoitan tätä nyt jo Tahitilla aika väsyneenä, koska saavuin tänne viime yönä. Tietokoneeni Suomessa ajassa oleva kello kertoo, että on 9.2.2010 klo 7.15. Mutta täälläpä on vasta 8.2.2010 klo 19.15. Elän puoli vuorokautta teitä jäljessä. Pääsiäissaari vasta pieni paikka oli ja kaukana. Kaksikymmentäneljä kilometriä kertaa kaksitoista ja asukkaita vain 4200. Etelä-Amerikan rannikolle oli matkaa 3700 kilometriä. Lähin asuttu saari, Pitcairn, on sekin 2000 kilometrin päässä. Täytyy ihmetellä, miten saaren pääkaupungista Hanga Roasta on voinut ... read more

Arriving quite early at the bus station in Santiago 5am exactly I noticed(luckily)there is a bus from there run by Tur Bus for the airport leaving every 30 minutes starting at 6:15am and takes half hour to get to the airport which is perfect for me as the plane for Isla de Pascua leaves at 8:10am, saving me at least $25 for the taxi. It was cold and decided to just sit inside for awhile other people are also there waiting for their connecting bus. The counter for the airport shuttle lit up but not open yet, the woman over the counter still putting her make up on, eventually we bought tickets at 6am when they opened. Fpund out when i arrived at the airport that the flight is full, for off season that was amazing. ... read more

Rapa Nui (Easter Island) is some 4000 miles from anywhere, with a population of just 4000 people making it the obvious place for us to run into a French couple (and their travelling teddy bear Fifi) with whom we had crossed the Vietnam/Cambodia border some seven months previously. Small world...and small island. We had an inkling that the two weeks we had on Rapa Nui might prove to be a little much and after covering the whole island in pretty much one day, meeting most of the local population on an evening out and, as it turned out, knowing many of the people on our campground already (as well as the Frenchies there were a number of people we had met on Tahiti) we realised that five days would probably be enough time to enjoy the ... read more

So after meeting Sarah at Santiago Airport, we sat around for about 5 hours drinking coffee, and then took off for Easter Island. During the 4 and half hour flight I managed to watch Cadillac Records, a film about the label Muddy Walters and co were on, not bad for a film with Beyonce in it!! and Brideshead Revisited which I didnt get quite to the end, so if someone has seen it, please let me know how it ends.. Anyway Easter Island; its a beautiful place, the remotest inhabitated island in the world. population approximately 3800. The first day we were there, we walked around where everyone lives Hanga Roa. Its fairly small, but Sarah and me still managed to get a bit lost, hey ho my sense of direction hasnt improved. The next three ... read more

Español más abajo After much anticipation and a 5 hour flight from Santiago (yes, it's that far from Chile!), west into the Pacific Ocean we arrived in Easter Island. Even though Easter Island is the most remote inhabited island in the world and only has 3,700 inhabitants, I had never expected its airport to be so tiny and informal, as soon as we landed I could tell I was somewhere special. There was a small band playing traditional music as soon as we stepped off the plane, we then realised it was not a show for the flight but they were playing for a family member who happened to be in our fight. Don't know how they were actually allowed to go past the point of scanning to be almost at the runway, but it just ... read more

Easter Island (otherwise known as "Rapa Nui" or "Isla de Pascua") was a must do stop for us despite the expense of getting and staying here. Magnus has wanted to come here for years and San still remembers talking about it over their second date together. So off we embarked on our first flight in over 3 months. Easter Island is over 2,000 miles from the nearest population center, (Tahiti and Chile), making it one of the most isolated places on Earth. It is best known for the giant stone monoliths, known as Moai, that dot the coastline. The early settlers called the island "Te Pito O Te Henua" (Navel of The World). We arrived at this triangle of volcanic rock in the middle of the South Pacific and were immediately greeted with the sweltering heat ... read more
