About a month ago, me, my room mate micaela, and sara, her friend from michigan went to la serena. We took the last bus at midnight, and got there at about 7 am. We left our bags at the bus stations, and went to explore the city. The streets were literally empty, because no one wakes up tell after 9, or 10, or even later! so it was kind of nice to have a peaceful city all to ourselves, but we couldn´t even buy coffee or anything to eat until about 10:30! Our plan was to stay just for the day, visit the beach, and i wanted to see my friends, but we ended up staying the night there!. We walked all over the city, it´s the second oldest city in chile, very beautiful with old ... read more

I guess even when travelling we can have one of those days. So after getting locked out of my room at 7 this morning, went down to an Internet cafe and half way through the session the keyboard messes up and I lose all the standard symbols, and get a completely random selection instead. Plus it had no usb port, so I couldn't´t upload any photos. Then had to call my bank, which cost me a small fortune, and there has been a fraudulent transaction on my card, so I have had to cancel my visa card. Came back to the hostel and used the Internet there, but strange incompatibility problems between my camera and the pc. Then realised I had lost my room key, turned out I had left it in the toilet this time. ... read more

So our journey Northward started with a trip South, it sounds a bit backward but then again you somtimes have to take a few steps back to get forwards. We headed for Vina, where they have a large bus terminal and where our bus for La Serena would be departing. Tur bus was our choice of bus company and they turned out to be as good as ever with the traditional supply of dubbed movies and varying body odours for company as we counted down the six hour journey. We arrived mid afternoon and after a quick consultation with the LP we directed ourselves to our hostel which was about 1.5km away. Now to all of you regular gym going people this is a mere warm up on the treadmill but however when you are laiden ... read more

Hey everybody...So after 21 hours of travel time and going through 4 countries we made it to Santiago, Chile...Our travel agent neglected to mention that we were flying from LAX to Costa Rica to Peru and then finally to our destination in Santiago...We arrived at 2am totally wiped out from our journey (although Lacsa TACA airlines had very impressive food and free wine) and took a shuttle to the city center to stay in a hotel for the night...The night door man at the hotel some how talked us into a suite for $5 extra dollars...We thought, "Hey, why not?"...Turns out our suite was made to sleep five and the extra perk was 3 single beds and 1 full...However, I have never been soooo happy to have a hot shower...The next day reminded me of how ... read more

Watched a little of the opening of the Olympics then had to take off…drove through Vina del Mar then Con Con. Interesting drive along the coast, saw the seals sunning themselves on the rocks, then we headed straight up Route 5 ..the PanAmericana…the road goes straight as the eye can see. From Santiago to La Serena is a dual carriageway which goes for miles and miles and miles. Arrived in La Serena in the late afternoon where we took the car to Budget because the there seemed to be a bit of wobble in the tyres, did a once around the local shopping centre til it was fixed then came the fun part of once again of looking for a hotel in the dark. We drove around and around the one way streets looking for a ... read more

Me hablo Español, pero solo un poco Español. Cuanto Cuesta una habataccion por favour. Puedo tener la cuenta, gracias. Frightening, truely frightening. Almost as frightening as trying to pronounce the average item on a Chillean menu. Take the nation dish of Chorrillana, as an example - a feat which we have been attempting with vigour since returning to the mainland. There´s a ´y´ sound in there, but we´ll let you work out where. They´d be better, of course, by refering to the dish as it is known in its natural state under the very tasty guise of Steak, Egg and Chips. Yip, Chillean cuisine seems to comprise of the best the British Caf has to offer. Throw in some hot dogs (completos) and the odd Empanada (Cornish Pasty) and your sorted, with not a noodle in ... read more

I´ve now arrived in La Serena, after a 7 hr bus journey , along what can only be described as a never changing lanscape, of mountains and cactuses on one side, and the Pacific Ocean on the other. I´ve managed to find myself staying in another Hostel, where I am the only one there - I seem to be developing a knack for it, and it is also the coldest place on earth - It feels warmer when you go outside! - You cant see your own breath then! I am here until Tuesday - a couple of days longer than I wanted to be , but it was the earliest I could get a bus up to San Pedro de Atacama ( a mere 17 hr bus journey!) I spent Saturday night at an observertory ... read more

Arrived in La Serena by plane from Santiago. Checked into best hostel so far - run by Germans, no less. Had our first ´Kompleto´ - a hotdog with guacamole, tomatoes and mustard - a local favourite, apparently. Pretty dam good. Visited one of the many observatories that night and looked at some stars and planets through a 12" telescope (200x magnification). Was amazing - saw Jupiter and Saturn too, but unfortunately couldn´t see Uranus. Did a tour the following day into the Elqui Valley and visited a Pisco distillery, which is a type of immature cognac famous to this region. Then went to visit the hometown of Gabrialla Mistral - yep, us neither. Leaving now to get the bus up to Copiapo.... read more

We arrived in La Serena at about 7am after a horrendously long 18 hour bus journey from San Pedro. The bus was okay apart from the fact that Luna and I were sitting very close to the loo which smelt pretty bad for the whole journey. And if that wasn´t enough we kept on getting disturbed by people coming down to use the loo, slamming the door maybe 2-3 times (it didn´t shut very easily) or standing with their bum in my face waiting for it to be free - all fun and games. We dumped our stuff at the hostel and went for a ´quick´ walk to the beach - apparently only 8 blocks away, although we got a little lost so it took quite a while. Worth it though. It was so great seeing ... read more
