After a long night bus, (in which I had the front seat on the top deck so I felt like I was in a video game) I arrived in La Serena. The hotel wasn't exactly my favourite what with the mold on the walls and stench of damp. Spent a bit of the afternoon watching football, browsing the super-size supermarket (seriously, this super-market novelty does not wear off in South America!) and watching TV (exciting times) until going out for dinner that evening. When we got back to the hotel, we decided to try the 'mentos in a diet coke' trick. Dropped the mento into the bottle and the coke exploded everywhere. In addition to finding Cadbury's chocolate, that was probably the highlight of my first day. At around 5.55am the next morning, there was a ... read more

La Serena was our last stop before we had to be in Santiago to start out teaching. After non stop travelling for two months we really wanted to take it easy and relax for a couple days and this is the perfect place to do so. We were a short walk away from nice beaches along the coast and we were still pretty far north so it was very hot. We spent our days exploring the city and laying on the beach. Our third day here we went to the nearby town of Coquimbo. It was just a short ten minute bus ride away and is a port city. Here we had some great fresh sea food. The last day at the beach we met some Chilenos that were fanticos about the soccer team Universidad de ... read more

"We are all in the gutter but some of us are looking up at the stars." Oscar Wilde The area around La Serena in northern Chile boasts the clearest skies in the world, hence the white domes of observatories dot the neighbouring mountains. In amongst this belt of star gazing scientific centres is Mamalluca, a 'tourist' observatory (scientists don't like tourist hordes disturbing their work). Through a digital telescope and also a manual one, we saw star clusters, Jupiter, a red giant star and the moon up close and personal. The moon was the most impressive. Afterwards our guide gave a short talk using computer programmes (check out Starry Night and Stellarium if you are interested). I could feel myself getting smaller and smaller in my chair as the screen zoomed outwards from Earth to ... read more

We arrived in La Serena at 5.30pm on Wednesday 14 October and the three of us walked to our hostel. We stayed in a nice little triple room in the gardens of 'Maria’s Casa'. Chile was playing Ecuador at 7pm so we found a bar with a big screen and ordered a couple of pitchers of Cristal beer. There was even a TV crew in the bar filming the crowd of people anytime something exciting happened. Chile won the game and celebrations followed but nothing like that of Santiago 4 days earlier. We went for dinner in a local restaurant but the food wasn’t great. Then we returned to our room and had a relatively early night. We all slept until midday and then we walked into town and went for lunch at the café in ... read more

I just got back from La Serena, about 6 hours up north on the coast. We went for the independence (September 18th) but didn´t do much celebrating. We walked along the boardwalk for about two hours, until we got to an amazing seafood restaurant. The guy we were staying with (from couchsurfing.org) wined and dined us but was a little annoying- inviting himself everywhere and due to his lack of self-confidence acted as if he knew everyyything. Anyways, we stuffed ourselves with great fish, sauces, wine and empanadas then took about a two hour nap on the beach. That night we went to the neighboring town, Coquimbo, and went to a few bars that were full of karoke and fiestas de las patrias. The next day we took a bus about an hour out to Vicuña ... read more

The further north we get the more arid and deserty it becomes. It's such a contrast from the lush Lake District down south. La Serena isn't far from the beach, but the weather still wasn't warm enough to get our shorts out. The first thing that happened in La Serena was that we got fleeced by the taxi driver. Gringo prices and all that, but I wasn't in the mood for arguing it. We'd had an early start and a long eight hour bus trip. It was only by a euro in the end, and in the grand scheme of things it was better to let it go. He brought us to a funky hostel called Aji Verde. We grabbed some dinner from the local deli counter and arranged the two tours that we wanted to ... read more

Our bus journey from Santiago to La Serena was pretty much the same as usual except for the fact that I got to see the Pacific Ocean for the first time EVER!!!! Unfortunately it looks no different to the Atlantic but......... Well I last left you complaining of my rash but hoping it was on the mend. Unfortunately when we got to La Serena and after a sleepless night I had to resign myself to the fact that I was going to have to get some medical attention. Thursday morning we woke up and I went to talk to the hostel reception and asked where the local tourist information was, thinking they would point me in the direction of an English speaking doctor, however the receptionist wanted to know why and I told her I needed ... read more

Morning of the 10th June, following breakfast we took our Tur Bus coach from Santiago up the coast to La Serena. Through the bus windows there was still lots of smog and clouds in the air as we drove out of Santiago and finally hit the west coast road and our first view of the Pacific Ocean since landing in South America. As we neared La Serena the view of desert changed to flat farmsteads and the typical looking cactus trees. As we arrived in La Serena the colonial buildings were everywhere and we watched in amusement as a juggler stood at the red lights in front of the waiting cars spinning and juggling until he would quickly jump back onto the pavement as the lights turned green :) As we got off the bus and ... read more

Spending a few days on the Chilean coast winding down after a fun-filled couple of months that took us from icebergs to jungle. We´re at La Serena and the entry in the guide book reads ¨blessed with a long golden shoreline¨, but that same guide book fails to mention the sea mist that blankets the coast for most of the day. Luckily, just 15 minutes east, every day has blue sky and sunshine so we rented a car with the steering wheel on the ¨wrong¨side and went to have a look. Numerous vineyards, all dedicated to producing grapes for Pisco Sour drinks, fill the valley, while the slopes are the domain of a type of cactus. Our car, a Toyota Yaris, seemed to be ¨possessed¨. An alarm system that would set itself and lock all the ... read more

So tonight I am leaving La Serena, a small city about 6 hours north of Santiago. I have been here for a few days. There are lots of beaches here - not the nicest ones - they are rather marred by strings of tacky hotels - but beaches nonetheless! I am still really enjoying being in Chile. I have eaten some fantastic fish, and I continue to find the people of Chile to be friendly, expressive, interesting. The other night I took a tour to an observatory 1 hour away, near Vicuña. We were able to look through a super-powered telescope and saw the rings around Saturn! A very knowledgeable tour guide then took us outside and pointed out all kinds of constellations to us. Using an outdoor telescope, we saw close-ups of the moon and ... read more
