4th January, Lauca Nacional Park, Arica We were picked up at 7.30am for our day trip to Lauca Nacional Park. We had booked it the day before with our hostel, as it had been recommended to us, although we didnt really know what to expect as we didnt have an itenary. The driver drove round half a dozen hostels to pick up the rest of the group. 1st stop was a motorway!!!! I still dont really know what it was we were supposed to be looking at! But the bus pulled over and we all got out to look at sand! Jake told me there was apparently supposed to be some sort of inca animals drawn into the sand. But I didnt notice any! I hoped the rest of the stops World be better than this! ... read more

3rd January, Arequipa y Arica We had to be at the bus station at 7am in the morning. We got a 7hour bus to Arica, Chile where we had planned to stay for 2-3 days. The bus journey was really pleasant for a change... ´Cruz del Sol´provided us with food, drinks, entertainment (in the form of bingo!) and some music. At the bus station in Tacna (buses to Arica from Arequipa go via here) we met another couple from Bristol. We were all approached by hoards of taxi companies trying to get us to go with them over the border to Chile. We split a taxi with the other couple, then it was an hour over the border. It was really funny when we got to the border, instead of your usual searches for guns and ... read more

Even unremarkable towns are called home by some people, usually with a sense of pride and affection that is mysterious to those who aren't from the place. Iquique (pronounced ee-KEE-kay) is like this. I had only two reasons for being there. It was on the way to Arica, which is further north, and it had been home to my friend Juan Villanueva, who lives in Geneva, so I stopped by for a short visit. In this part of Chile the land is a high plateau that drops abruptly to sea level. Iquique is a city of about 200 000 people that stands partly on the plateau and partly on a tongue of land sticking out into the Pacific Ocean. I got there about 22h00 and as I've been warned about muggings in South America, I don't ... read more

Dag 176 - 178. ... read more

Dag 170 - 175.

Well we ended up having to stop in Arica anyway. Our original intention had been to stop for a look because they have some of the biggest waves in Chile. But then we heard that it wasn't the most interesting of places and we had just seen huge waves in Iquique, and besides the clock was ticking for our booked Inca Trail trek. We needed to get to Peru. We were hoping to do it in one hit and get a 20 hour bus all the way to Puno. We had some reservations about it, as the advice in the LP was to not get a night bus in Peru, as there was lots of risks including hold ups, robberies, kidnapping and drunk bus drivers, and so on. It didn't sound great, but if you were ... read more

Day 579 (28.10.08) Arriving in at the bus station at the crack of dawn, we pulled our stuff into a taxi destined for a hostel Jason had reserved a room at. When we arrived we were greeted by a slightly bleary eyed but very friendly hostel owner who showed us around dropping us off at our vast spacious dorm room. A great place. After some early morning delerious hilarity we all crashed out for a couple of hours. After getting washed and ready to face the day we stocked up on a mountain of fruit, veg and other groceries and went back to cook up a feast of a brunch. After whiling away a couple of hours, we decided that whilst we were in one of the most famous surfing areas of Chile, we should partake ... read more
