Alright.. It's my last day in Arica. I'm currently trying to fit everything in my suitcases (with little luck). I really didn't buy much here but i'm trying to bring back some of the extra art supplies (I overshot how much i'd need). I donated about half of everything to the university program and about 1/4th to friends but I still have some ink and frames im working on bringing back along with gifts I'm carrying for the dean here since his daughter lives in cedar falls. (Just a heads up, most of the presents I am bringing back are fotos haha). My trip this year was amazing. I don't really have the time to write a big final how things went here update, nor the emotional strength to do so in this moment. But I ... read more

So, pretty standard really, about 3 weeks behind as always, and had all the best intentions. it was adios arica. wednesday morning while we attempted to once more digest feo banana for breakfast it was decided enough was enough. we may be saving money but we were not smiling and the sun did not need a hat, but more a stick to beat its way through the ever pressing clouds. we packed up the windbreak and fork (nicked a bit of tarpaulin - forgive me lord but teh dogs did steal the bread) and decided to head south to Iquique where teh ´rough guide´promised surfing hostels, sunshine and a precarious sanddune that leered over the city like a huge slab of chocolate. plenty of time for that. fortuneatly we managed to hitch a lift into teh ... read more

As of yesterday I have officially finished my screen printing adventures in Arica, Chile. (well. we'll see if i'm really really done; I still have a week here so who knows) I came back from my trip wanting to have workshop style classes open to everyone. My previous classes were good and fun, but didn't seem to be the most advantageous to todos. I taught a select group of students and had really horrible attendance with the second group. So I talked to the dean and my supervising professor about having open workshops this week to whoever wanted to come. Now that the semester is over I can use the classrooms whenever I want. They were worried I wouldn't have any students, but a simple email and facebook message brought in more students in two days ... read more

We had taken the decision that hostels were far too expensive, CHile is by no means a backpackres haven and ´Sunny days´hostel may have given us cake on arrival but it was not within budget. Good old çlonely planet had told us there was a campsite near by so we set off to find it, deciding a collectivo was better as no one seemed ot have heard of it. polystyrene body boards in tow we clambered in. And then drove. 3 beachs we drove past. on one side of us was the sea, on the other a sprawling city and sand dunes, and then the city sort of petered out and there was only the odd tin shack, some open top with bedframes and scrap metal all about. We finally drove up a sidelane where ... read more

Right so have returned from the winter vacation one week earlier than had intended .Hopes of Mendoza in persuit of some of the world´s finest wines were postponed in a desperate need for sunshine, summer holidays and a bit of body boarding. Surfing maybe what the cool kids do but body boarding has definately got status here. Boards retail at a muy carro price and many have upgraded to ones with a a fin - at every beach i´ve visited you are guaranteed to see some strapping chileans heaving on the wetsuit for the sake of basically sitting down in the surf and waited to be taken from behind by a nippy pacific wave. Body boarding is business here. WE borrowed some of the Duran family´s finest polyester specifmens, both artistically adorned with exotic scenes of ... read more

29th April 2009 After another 12 hour journey, with no food we arrived in Tacna, hungry and with no where to stay. Once we found somewhere a rest was in order so we slept, waking up only for food and drink. Going out for dinner that night we realised that we hadn't missed much, Tacna is definately a border town and nothing else. The Italian food we had was nice though. 30th April 2009 Today it was time for a new country. So we crossed the border in a novel way via train, these are very rare in South America and as such it wasn't exactly the orient express. Even so it was a great way to cross and a lot less hassle than getting a taxi (the only other option)! As an extra special treat ... read more

Hola a todos! So I made it home safely last night from my wild adventure of a viaje with my friend Francisco (and new friend Pablo). I have enough memories, stories, fotos, and observations to fill your mind for hours, but for the sake of avoiding carpal tunnel and saving some stories for tea time in person, i'll do a quick (keep in mind I am still Amy, so quick=half a novel) recap and attempt to select just the highlights in pictures. 3 de Julio-Viernes- Flew to Santiago Chile, Met up with Francisco, walked around Chile's capital all day/night. Saw Plaza de Armas, la Moneda (presidents house), Cerro Santa Lucia, Barrio Bohemio y Bella Vista. Returned to Pancho's home in Machali 4/5 de Julio-Fin de Semana- Happy birthday USA!!-Spent the weekend with Pancho in his house, ... read more

I can't believe I've been here nearly a month already. This last month is going to fly by sooo quickly. I've finally returned to my habit of taking obscene amounts of photos, so I thought I'd do a photo update. Friday morning at 7am I fly to Santiago (yes, it was supposed to be Sunday, I changed my flight to have a little extra travel time and make it for Francisco's family birthday party Saturday). For the next two weeks I'll be traveling with my Chilean friend who studied with my in Iowa this past semester (we road tripped to Colorado in May and he spent time in Winterset, so some of you have met him). We have very tentative plans of heading to Argentina Sunday, seeing Mendoza and continuing to Buenos Aires where i'll be ... read more

So they tell me I made the local news Sunday night. I didn't see it, but.. it's kind of cool I suppose :) Sunday I woke up really really early and left my house at 4:45 to take a bus outside of town to climb a mountain to watch the sunrise. wow. Chile has an interesting affect on me. It was FREEZING.. and I waited with a few friends for 2 hours... The Aymara new year starts with the first rays of light on the solstice. So we waited. and waited. and waited. and waited. and finally started seeing light around 7:30 because of the fog from the ocean. lol. It was really interesting to see the traditions and rituals though, and everyone was extremely eager to talk to us gringas about why we were there ... read more
