We spent two nights in Sao Paulo en route to Rio. It was, as expected, not a particularly nice city. It was busy and didn´t feel especially safe, particularly at night. We checked out the view of the entire city from ´Edifico Italia´(their equivalent of the Empire State Building), the city is truly enormous. Not much else to say about Sao Paulo really, at least it broke up the long journey to Rio. ... read more

Calling in from a little beach place just north of Fortaleza...Monday morning and still a few people left after their weekend away...I´m still loving Brasil, wierd language (Portuguese) that, overheard, could be German, French, Russian or a lot of others...fortunately my limited español seems to work....the people are curious, friendly and cheerful....to us anyway!...amongst each other there´s a clear pecking order and an enormous inequality in wealth...however, notwithstanding the fact that I´ve not met any of the really wealthy (and probably won´t!) who may well have a sense of duty etc...but lets not go there just yet...there is a level of arrogance and rudeness by the ciustomer to the wait staff, for example , in restaurants that belies the insecurity of the disempowered...any little edge... Still and all, what a sombre note to set off on!...lets ... read more

On Thursday night (3rd November) I went out to dinner at a typical Brazilian pub with Bira's family and the German Contingent ("GC") Bira's brother Fernando married his German girlfriend, Catrin, the weekend before I arrived so a group of about 12 had come over from Germany. Steffi, a friend of Catrin's from Germany with whom I became acquainted when she was living in Melbourne, was amongst the GC. I have much admiration and respect for Steffi due to the fact that although she has a hearing disability her command of the English language is so superb that I originally mistook her as being a native Australian! She has a beautiful nature and is one of the most interesting people I have met. Steffi and I shared our thoughts about São Paulo and she told me ... read more

Below are three photographs taken from the balcony of one of Bira's apartments in Santo André - located in a building called Grã Bretanha (literally Great Britian in Portuguese). The top photograph is of a tiny little favela located in a small park in this middle-class residential area. I am fascinated by favelas and the people who live in them.... read more

Gran Savana/Brazilian Border To get to Brazil Manaus, we drove and drove and drove (I was sitting at the back with a sour arse). It felt longer because the landscape of the Gran Savana (south East of Venezuela) was surprisingly flat. I expected to find indigenous villages on the side of the road, with easy to access waterfalls on the other side. We flied through the bare landscape -not sure where to stop I gather- until the border (only 2 hours there!. I reclaimed my French nationality to save A$90 visa fee). Manaus I was surprised by the sheer size of Manaus. As a Zone Franc, it has attracted big manufacturers, providing employment in one of the most remote area of Brazil. Our boat down the Amazonian river was not to leave for another 4 days ... read more

Today I visited my first Brazilian supermarket with Bira's mother, Magali. There were 50 checkouts. Yes, FIFTY CHECKOUTS. The supermarket had entire aisles dedicated solely to pasta (even Barilla, my favourite & the only one I buy), aisles dedicated solely to cheese, aisles dedicated solely to mayonnaise, aisles dedicated solely to biscuits... need I go on? There was even a fountain spouting red wine and forget FlyBuys - they have cars instead. Yeah, buy enough and you'll get a car. The fruit section of the supermarket was about the size of a normal ordinary Safeway. The meat section is a carnivore's paradise. And as for the laundry & cleaning products, obsessive compulsive cleaners such as myself would find themselves in paradise amongst all the sprays, liquids, gels... oh and Jif is called Cif in Brazil. And ... read more

Similar, but less intense than my disappointment at finding no small dogs in Chihuahua is the lack of those big nuts in Brasil...tempered by the fact that I like small dogs and those nuts are only fillers in the mixed nut collections!...however, too early to digress! And this is the 2nd attempt as the fcuking computer just bombed and dropped a few pages of gems!...ahh cést la bloody vie! So, reflections of Manaus I´ll publish later, suffice to say a great intro to brasil..so the boat ride..the fabulous Amazon Star...3 levels of fun and excitement...after 12 hours wondering if I´ll survive the endless re-run of re-runs of the jungle banked scenery and apart from getting bogged on a sandbar for most of the first night..not much happening! But then you get into the way of life ... read more

After a few hiccups regarding baggage allowance at Tullamarine airport, I board an Emirates flight for Auckland - the first leg of my journey to São Paulo, Brasil. The flight was amazing, Emirates' services is fantastic and they cured my fear of flying. However, I had to sit next to a really floppy-skinned obese woman (younger than me!) with bad body odour, flatulence (silent but deadly would be an appropriate description) and that annoying foot tapping habit which is customary of sufferers of constipation. Arriving in Auckland, I had 3 hours to spare so went off for a relaxing massage which saw me board my next flight, with Aerolineas Argentina, in a totally blissed out state. On this flight I sat next to an ex-NZ rugby player with a penchant for lavender oil. As I never ... read more

So we took a two day trip into Brazil to see the amazing Iguazu Falls - the largest natural waterfall in the world. It is situated in the rainforest between Argentina, Brazil & Paraguay and to see the whole thing you need to see it over two days - one day in Brazil and the other in Argentina. We had met up with Rebecca in BA from our Kumuka tour and she decided to come with us. We were looking forward to a couple of days chilling in the Brazilan sunshine. We were told to check in at the domestic airport one hour before our flight, however the tour company declined to tell us that they had booked Rebecca onto a different flight leaving from the international airport. Added to this, when we arrived at the ... read more

Well, I have arrived... Everything so far has been great (appart from the weather). Anderson´s family and friends have been feeding me great food and showing me how to make Minas cheese bread (tastes really good). Elizangela and me have been spending time getting on way too many buses and missing stops and generally behaving like nutters! Love it... Anyway, just wanted to put a really boring first entry to see if it works and stuff. I hope everybody in the Uk is ok...... read more
