June 13. We emerged from the fog of a 9-hour overnight flight into the Rio airport, which is large and modern, walked about half a mile (literally - I have a pedometer), and entered a long, slow immigration line serviced by only two agents. The joys of travel. Things were looking up, though, when we breezed through customs and emerged into the real world to find our Overseas Adventure Travel guide, Danna, and four other group members waiting for us. From that point on we were well taken care of with comfortable bus transportation and conversation on the way to our Rio Othon Palace Hotel right on the beach in Copacabana. First impressions of the city: huge, spread out over a large area divided by beautiful peaks and bodies of water, requiring bridges and tunnels that ... read more

Flying into Rio, you could see Christ the Redeemer in the distance along with the famous coast lines, along with Mount Sugar Loaf and the Olympic Stadium. Filled with anticipation we landed at Rio airport over the ocean and in no time checked into our hotel. We wandered around the city centre, homeless people everywere ...... no doubt they are going to be ushered out of the city when the Olympics are hosted. But so far not a trace of Olympic fever, no banners, no merchandise products, no sponsorship signs and only 6 weeks to go. The next day my dream of seeing Christ the Redeemer came true boarding the tram that climbs to the top. How magnificent he his and the veiw of the most breath taking coast line that surely is the most recognised ... read more

First time in Brazil, I was amazed how large Rio de Janeiro was. Every bit of land on hillside as was built on, from favelas to multi-storey buildings. We were staying at Copacabana beach, so spent the next day planning the trip and then relaxing at the beach. The waves are pretty crazy there, with the odd one rolling you right over. It was understandable how not too many people were out too far in the water because of this. The next day was spent at the Jardin Botanico. There were lots of monkeys there, pretty cute wee things, we saw one cracking a nut on the ground with his human like hands and others grooming each other. There was a lovely mix of flowers across Brazil and South America as well as the rest of ... read more

When one thinks about Rio de Janeiro images of sun kissed beaches, bikinis, women, legendary nightlife, futbol, and a vibrant and friendly populace come to mind. Everything you have heard, read, dreamed about and then some is true. I spent about a week in Rio (probably should have stayed longer) and it has been one of the absolute highlights of my trip to date. It was the exact recharge and reinforcement I needed for me to again get my state of mind to where it should be. Welcome to "The Magnificent City". Up early in Porto Seguro I was able to secure a taxi for the 1km ride to the airport for a cost of R$20. Really a total ripoff considering you can take a long distance 50km bus for the same cost, but at 3am ... read more

Travelblog –journal for Rio de Janeiro/ Paraty / Ilha Grande (November and December 2015) Sunday, 29 November 2015 – We arrived at Rio de Janeiro’s Tom Jobim international airport in the early evening, after sunset, and spent the next hour waiting to clear immigration. A KLM flight had landed prior to our own and there were only three officials processing the non-Brazilian arrivals. Our two small suitcases we waiting for us when we finally reached the baggage claim. We are travelling much lighter on this visit to South America – one carry-on sized suitcase each, which we checked, and our 15 (Joan) and 20 (Greg) litre backpacks that we carried on. Banished to permanent storage is the super-size suitcase we hauled from Medellin to Buenos Aires! We found an ATM machine and withdrew some cash and ... read more

Today was the day for ticking off the last of my must do things in Rio - Cristo Redentor, the iconic statue which looms over Rio from up above, day and night. Along with Sugar Loaf and the Iguaçu falls, which I saw three years ago, I would then have done the three things that tourists must do in Brazil and could do the things I really wanted to do such as avoid big cities! The day got off to a bad start when the metro machine swallowed the integrated ticket that was also supposed to get me on the bus which would take me the rest of the way. However since the woman in the ticket booth had been less than helpful I decided not to make a fuss for the sake of about 75p. As ... read more

Thought I should do the Sugar Loaf Mountain today as I only have two more days left in Rio. The plan was to take a bus but I failed to understand Sheila's instructions about where to catch this (turns out she wasn't sure anyway) so made for the front alongside Copacabana beach. Most of the bus stops here tell you nothing about which buses stop there so after a while I approached one of the stallholders. I must have asked by mistake if I could pick up a taxi, not a bus, for Pão de Açúcar because, after I had let about 50 taxis go by, he approached me looking puzzled. This was useful as I established there was no chance of my getting the bus I needed there so I hailed the next taxi. There ... read more

Brazilan trip 31st March I had to get up along with John before three to get to the Manchester Airport for flight to Amsterdam at 5.55 am. I hardly slept at all so landed in Rio exhausted, having frittered away the time on board watching films. Both flights were uneventful in spite of having a baby aged not much more than a year behind me on the long haul one. I forgot he was there and so apparently did the parents who largely ignored him (and each other) during the flight. From time to time he helped himself to breast milk with very little assistance from his mother and the rest of the time slept. Apparently a successful approach to child-rearing, if the aim is to pretend you don't have a baby! In order to get ... read more

Today it is Good Friday in Rio! Maybe not the best day to be going to visit one of the world's most famous religious icons? But ... more on that later. When we looked out our window this morning we could see people out an about early on this religious holiday on Copacabana Beach and there were frigate birds wheeling overhead - the first we have seen since the Galápagos Islands. After breakfast we commenced our bus tour of the city. Our first stop was at the Metropolitan Cathedral of Saint Sebastian which was surprisingly deserted on Good Friday morning. When I asked Gina about this she told me that its main service would be later in the day as the final stop of an Easter procession. Built between 1964 and 1979, the cathedral was designed ... read more

We had agreed last night that we would go for an early (-ish) morning walk along the canyon path beside the falls for one last look at the amazing Iguaza Falls before we departed for Rio. Ha, this plan coincided with Richmond's first game of the season this morning (Thursday night in Oz) so Bernie and Meredith weren't doing anything until the game was finished. Bernie was watching it live on Foxtel Go and Meredith was following it on the AFL App. Phew, a win to Richmond so, finally, two happy Richmond supporters could be dragged away from their electronic devices to go for a walk. It was lovely and quiet on the canyon path just after 8.00am this morning before the park was opened to visitors. It was quite overcast, but the falls were still ... read more
