Blocos From what I’ve seen so far, I’ve decided that Carnival is just Schoolies Week on crack. I've seen a lot of teenagers running around drunk and half naked. It’s a really positive vibe, but if I’m honest, it’s not really my scene. Give me a quiet beach or a hike any day. I know, it’s really sad to say - but it’s true. I’ve been to a few bloco parties…some by mistake and one on purpose. A bloco party is a street party where people walk behind a float playing loud music. There were literally thousands of people at the ones I’ve seen. Police close down the streets and everyone floods in. I danced and walked in the first few I saw, but today I stood to the side and watched it all pass by. ... read more

We ended up doing a lot of the major sights towards the end of Carnaval, because the weather was so rainy when we first got to Rio (we shipped off to sunny Salvador quicksmart, we were too pasty to hang around in clouds.) The sights were busy, as nearly a million people visit Rio during Carnaval, so avoid doing this if you can, though we only really got annoyed at Christ the Redeemer. The botanical gardens are not always top of our sightseeing list, but Rio's is really worth a visit. The final review of Rio, 2 weeks is a long time in one city but sometimes it´s hard to find the bus station. I left Hostel Arco Verde and went back to a warm welcome at the Lagoa Guesthouse. I made a tour of a Favella, not one of the crass jeep tours but a local guide who actually let you walk through some of the streets and get your flip flops dirty. I´m under no illusion that on a tour that your going to see anything other than the sanitized, posh bits of a favella, they all kept their little front porches very clean, but still some experience. The best bit was once at the top, we rode down on mototaxis, that´s motorbikes though it was total freewheeling through heavy human traffic. Another Rio Gem ... read more

Well here we go again, the temptation just too great, backpack is back on my back. This time it is a little look at what South America has to offer. Flew from Glasgow Airport via Heathrow so Rio is some Contrast. After an 11 hour flight it was the usual customs etc but I had booked a ¨'Radio Taxi¨¨ in advance predictiing that I would not want any hassle and sure enough a chap was there at the exit with a bit of paper with my name spelled almost correctly. As is the grand tradition when I arrive in a strange place late at night, the driver did not know my guesthouse but we got to what looked like the right place after I provided the driver with the number. And the proprieter Wesley was there ... read more
