We spent a few days relaxing in the eco holiday town of Bonito where we had a great time watching hundreds of fish of all colours and sizes whilst snorkelling in the Rio Do Prata. A relaxing experience with no effort required, we just lay there in our wet suits and let the river current do all the work. After Bonito it was off to Foz do Iguacu and two days of exploring the huge and awe inspiring Iguacu Falls which lie on Brazil´s southern border with Argentina. The first day we spent viewing the falls from the Brazillian side with its panoramic views of the huge sequence of waterfalls. The next day we went back over the border to Argentina (steak sandwiches for lunch again - yes!) where it is possible to get really close ... read more

Today (13/10/07) we arrived via nite bus to beautiful Bonito in Brazil at about midday. we checked into the HI hostel and watched the England v France rugby semi final with some french. It was tense for a while but eventually we won. Ya that means we are in the final and have to watch the game tomorrow to see who we are up against. If it is Argentina in the final then we will be trying to get back to Argentina to watch the final. No one here in Brazil is particularly interested in rugby so its going to be hard to find a place showing it. anyway, more importantly, what ive been doing. Well, we chilled out by the pool for the rest of the day and cooked our own food and enjoyed sleeping ... read more

So after our trekking in the Pantanal I headed south 5 hours by minibus to Bonito with the Scandinavians and Spanish couple I'd been hanging out with. Bonito is a typical Brazilian village in the middle of nowhere. The roads for most of the journey were dust tracks and it made for a bumpy ride but I was getting used to this by now! Bonito is most known for the several crystal clear rivers that run by it. You jump in at the top and float down the river admiring all the different fishes - pretty straight forward really! There are also several pretty cool caves there. We checked into the Bonito Hostel International which was real nice compared to some of the other places I'd been staying at - and a pleasant change from ... read more

Hi guys, just a quick story from this part of the world. We´ve just enjoyed 4 days/nights in the Pantanal here in Brazil (wetlands east of Rio & Sao Paulo), and on the way back we caught a shuttle bus to Bonito. The last 70kms of the road into Bonito were gravel/dirt road. That´s not forgetting that the asphalt road before that had plenty of holes in it as well, with a few trucks weaving towards us as well. Anyway, it would be safe to say that anyone doing more than 50km/hr on the dirt road would be risking life & limbs, or at least their vehicles. Nevertheless, we did find 2 speed bumps on that dirt road, with road signs for speed bumps........ Nevermind, nuf said..... Also, just to remind people that we still are ... read more

Bonny Bonito, as the Irish might say. You may have already read about our speedhump eperience, so we can skip that bit of overzealous city council piece of work. In short, Bonito is a bit hard to work out. Either A) they are trying to build up a tourist based economy here, and are using high, and non-negotiable tour prices to build everything up, or B) they´re overcharging so much in an effort to keep too manu tourists away! Had a chat with a guy from Iguazu, and he didn´t understand it either, as everything seems to be overpriced. Bonito´s claim to fame are very sediment rich rivers, that appear to be a very deep and beautiful blue. And there are lots of them too ! Some of this blue water can also be found in ... read more

A very quick blog just to say that my snorkelling trip today was absolutely amazing!! It took place in the Rio da Prata just outside of Bonito. After circling a big pool we then got to float downriver for about 2-3hrs. The water was sooooooo clear and hence you could see really far. It was teaming with fish who came really close. Dorado is the only name that comes to mind but there were huge black and yellow ones, tiny flitty ones eating bits of leaves and gorgeous stripey ones. I used my underwater camera and so hopefully there should be something to bore you all with when I return. In one pool there were also volcanic patches bubbling out of the sand on the bottom of the riverbed. Our guide was great and also took ... read more

Sunday was another long day with over nine hours of driving. We ended up staying in a hotel in Camo Grande, rather than rough camping, which was a welcome change in plan. Apparently though, it just means we have to rough camp one night when the itinerary has us down to stay in a hotel - oh well, you can't win them all. The cook group did a magnificent stew & unfortunately there wasn't enough for seconds. I spent three hours on the internet, for lack of anything better to do, by which time everybody else had gone to bed, so I followed suit. The last of three long driving days took us to our desination of the Pantanel on Monday. Our only delay was when we encountered a Budget truck (another overland company), stuck on ... read more
