The next day I left for Manaus with Regi in the small boat. Saying goodbye was not easy, and as some of Regi’s sisters didn’t know I was leaving until I said goodbye, with a lump in my throat. “but why?”, they asked. It was complicated. They had hoped I would stay there always, and that felt good, but of course I had to go and in the end they all understood. Regi’s mom cried however. We got to Manaus late, so after grabbing XSALADA sandwich (an extremely popular Brazilian hamburger with cheese, ham, lettuce and tomato, sold on every corner for a dollar or two) at my favorite place, called “African café” (even though there was nothing African about it), we spent the night in the most dodgy hotel ever. It was strange, cause, I’d ... read more

... read more

So our boat to Manaus was a completely different experience to the first time around but again we had to sleep three nights on the boat. Although the first night we were docked and had the boat to ourselves. The captain agreed that we could sleep overnight which saved us finding accomodation for the night. When we woke up after our first night we thought the boat would be crammed with hammocks like previously but to our astonishment only 40 or 50 hammocks went up which left us with plenty of room to swing our hammocks to our hearts content ;) We were due to leave at 1pm but didn´t end up leaving until 4pm which meant we would have a late arrival in Manaus. Our neighbours seemed very nice through our sign language we spoke, ... read more

So as I mentioned, we came back from the jungle and after a bite to eat and watching TV with the folks, we had another exhausting bath on the beautiful moonlit beach before climbing into bed (our hammocks above the cliff). To describe the house a little better, it was actually a wooden cabin like most simple homes in the amazon, with a clean cement floor, partitioned into a kitchen, Regi’s room, his sisters’ room, and the parents’ room. The kitchen had no furniture, just a couple shelves and a stove, and the freshly washed plates would be in a large plastic bowl on the floor, as most things were, making it complicated for me to cook, so I usually left it up to Regi or whoever. Regi had just one dresser, and his hammock ... read more

So the next day we were planning to head out into the jungle, Regi had promised me a full week in the jungle, and I could hardly wait. It was a really hot day, as usual, but I did my exercises, as I did most days. We had a few beers in the afternoon as we got provisions and had dinner in the “restaurant”. We headed out into the jungle at night, and spent about 4 hours jogging through the bush, jumping over giant tree stubs and logs with our flashlights. Regi’s acute perception of the jungle and all its details was astounding. He noticed every detail and sound, despite the darkness. He knew when something was out of place or moving about, even in the darkness and the scurry of our pace. He would pause ... read more

The following morning, I had my usual 1-2 km swim that accompanied most of my baths in the lake. I glided through the still black waters surrounded by jungle in the glorious morning sun. The further I drifted from all the families doing laundry and dishes, the more exotic the sounds of all the strange birds got. I knew I was peeking into a world seldom seen by people like me. It was like the most beautiful canoe ride, but the canoe was my body, and I had developed quite an amazing resistance, being able to swim for hours without stop or tire. However, as beautiful as the tranquility was and as much as I wanted to go further and further I never went out of eye shot for the fear of what dangers laid beneath ... read more

Having been there now for several days, I realized I had to get the rest of my stuff that was still back at Cida’s place in Manaus. The poor girl had thought I was coming back after my “4-day” tour at the posada. She obviously didn’t know me…. I felt bad cause I spent just one night there and never came back, and that was not my intention. So it was time to take a trip there and get the rest of my stuff. Also, my Brasilian visa was up in a couple of days, and therefore I had to pay a visit to the federal police in order to renew it. Luckily Regi’s parents were planning to go to the city the next day in their tiny boat and so I could hitch a ride. ... read more

PART 3 - LIFE ON THE ALDEA So as I said the Brazilians and Joshua left Tupe before midday and here I was…. In the sunshine of the bright and beautiful white beach sand dune beach with my Indian escort… hmmm….. do you want a beer? Sure… why not. So he bought me a beer- the first of several. We sat on the beach and talked about stuff. I wasn’t nervous but I liked him. We went for a swim in the river and then back up the hill to grab another beer. I was hungry, having skipped lunch, so it was time to find some dinner. We walked down the hill towards the antichrist’s house to see what he was selling that day. Maybe he had killed a chicken. The antichrist was a hilarious man ... read more

PART 2 - THE JUNGLE POSADA Off we went on the boat to see the “meeting of the waters” where the black Rio Negro, meets the yellow Soa lemoines to form the great river Amazonas. The tour guide only spoke Portuguese and the tourists only English, so as usual I became the official translator- dammit!! I say that these discounts are well deserved!!! It would be too cumbersome to describe all the tourists, but most of them, lovely faces from lovely places, except this one carra de cannon- a girl that couldn’t stop frowning and looking at me with distain- she finally blurted out she was jealous because I spoke 5 languages, and she only spoke 4... my god- get a grip girl! Who the hell cares... It was because I was obviously speaking Portuguese most ... read more
