Not only can Bolivia lay claim to the World´s Most Dangerous Road but they also def have the world´s bumpiest road!!! Despite being warned by the Kiwi lads about the perils of the bus journey to Uyuni, we decided to get the bus....a few bumps sure we can survive that. As it turned out we could have survived the bumps, it was the bus being two and half hours late (due to flooding - should have given us our first clue), the three flat tyres and the three rivers that we had to cross....sans bridges! When we reached the first one, the driver got out....waded in, looked around, observed the area for a while and then decided to drive through anyway. There was a big cheer as we arrived bumping and shaking on the other side. ... read more

... read more

The first part of our three day tour of the Salar de Uyuni was a visit to the train cemetery just outside of Uyuni. This is where the first trains to haul loads of cargo through Bolivia have permanently come to a rest. When I was going around from tour agency to tour agency, some of them mentioned that they went to the train cemetery last. I must say that I was glad to do it at the beginning because I think that after seeing everything else that I was suppose to see on this trip, I wouldn't be very interested in this at the end of it. If this train cemetery were in Canada, there would be no way that we would be able to climb all over these train corpses, but as we are ... read more

The two Bolivias "I know two Bolivias, one is populated by people with black hair and black eyes. Those people are short in height, they don't work too hard and like to keep to themselves. But there is a second Bolivia where the people have blue and green eyes, are tall and open minded and this is the Bolivia, where I come from." When the freshly elected Miss Bolivia travelled to the United States to "represent her country" a stunned Andean nation had to listen to those words which did not only promote the (in the Altiplano) very unpopular idea of seperation, but also attested to an offending racism against indigenous people. It was our guide in the mines of Potosi who tells us this story and we have no idea how much of it is ... read more

I thought I would create a short entry to describe and show pictures of the markets that Uyuni has on Thursday mornings. They could happen on other days but as I don't plan on staying in this town for a whole week, I don't know what other days they would be on. As I had to met at the tour agency office at 10:30AM, I decided to give myself lots of time in the morning to prepare. I packed up my stuff and then went for breakfast. The weather was nice enough to eat outside on a patio and it felt great to be doing that at the end of December. Breakfast was the normal thing you get when you are a tourist, bread and jam, eggs and coffee with milk. Locals don't eat at restaurants ... read more

After our late arrival the night before, Karin and I woke up at 10AM. Only 6 hours of sleep but we did not want to waste our day sleeping. I went to turn on the light switch in our room and nothing happened. Strange considering the light worked well the night before. We could hear some voice outside our room and we found out that there was no electricity in the town of Uyuni. They said it would be temporary and that it happens often. Unfortunately, due to the fact that there was no electricity, this meants there was no hot water for showers. I never did get a good explanation for why the electricity goes out often in this city. People just seemed to go on doing what they do without the electricity. Our stomachs ... read more

Now i really know why most of people that comes to Bolivia says thats this is the most beatiful country in the world. The last three days was fu**king AMAZING !!! the salt plans, the desert, the mountains, all the views that i never tought that exists, this is Bolivia. I arrived at Uyuni very tired from the trip from POtosí, was very unconfortable. Then i payed my 3 days tour and went to Hostal Sajama to sleep - to start the tour i could have to wake up very early! We entered on a 4 WD car and the first stop was San Juan - a little village that produces salt - the gate to the Salar. Then we enteres in the Salar, the second and the 3rd days was in Reserva Faunistica Eduardo Avaroa, ... read more

This time yesterday we were twiddling our thumbs whilst sweating to the sounds of the jungle and watching the rain pour down; seemingly dashing hopes for an exit from the Amazon basin. Now 22 hours, a miniature plane and a bumpy bus ride later we´re 3000 metres higher and in the southern deserts of Bolivia. We´ve been in Bolivia two weeks now and although not sure what to expect from a country whose number one industry is still cocaine and the national pastime appears to be demonstrating, so far it´s been good (despite a few organisational question marks!) We crossed the border on the shores of Lake Titicaca (the highest major lake in the world) on an overnight bus from Peru. Well I say this, but our expectations of our “direct” service to Copacabana actually going ... read more

Great News from Bolivia- MY CAMERA LIVES!!!!!!!!!!!!! I got to Sucre, a wonderful civilized, cultured, landscaped city for a bit of a break, signed up for another week of Spanish lessons, and went about asking around for a camera repair man. You would´ve thought i was asking for something that hadn´t been invented yet. But after about 10 shops, I found a young guy who agreed to look at it. $50 lighter, my camera was fixed, sans a few original pieces!!!!! Great news considering my only other lead was a restaurant owner who used to own a camera repair shop but went out of business for lack of customers! Found absolutely nothing even close to my camera around there, so I will hang on extra tight to it now! Sucre was a great time. Took myself ... read more

So after leaving Potosi and the Sillver mines I was now on my way to Uyuni and a 3 day tour to see the Salar de Uyuni or the Salt plains. There were 6 of us squashed into a Toyota 4WD Landcruiser with all our luggage on top and the first stop was a graveyard for trains, not that exciting but worth seeing nonetheless. Then it was onto the Salt plains, a huge expanse that used to be a salt lake and has now dried up and in some places is 20 metres thick of salt! As we continued we came to an island full of cacti growing very high, quite a surreal place in the middle of this salt desert. That night we visited a necropolis, a place where a group of Ecuadorians thousands of ... read more
