Hi, It has been really long since I wrote an entry, so my kids decided it is my turn this time to tell the story of our adventures in Bolivia after returning from Rurenabaque (Pamapas and Amish). And if the kids say I should be doing somethin, I better do it... After returning to La Paz from Rurenabaque, Tal decided he has to make some strength and courage test - he went biking on the 'Death Road'. It is a gravel road that stretches over ~60 km with many curves. It is very narrow and on one side there is the wall of the mountain and on the other side a steep downhil fall... It got its name from the fact that many cars and people have ended their life on this road from the many ... read more

Potosi is the highest city in the world at an altitude of 4020m above sea level. It also has a working silver mine in the mountain of Cerra Rica (rich mountain).but we decided not to go down the mines where we could potentially get asbestosis or inhale any number of other poisons. Instead we went to watcha film called The Devil´s Miner in Sucre. It is a documentary about a 14 year old boy who works down the mines to suppport his family as he has no father, his ambition is to get out of the mines and get an education. it was hard-hitting and very incitful! Inside the mine they have a god called Tio who they make offerings of coca or alcohol to and he protects them from harm. The miners fear him and ... read more

I arrived in Potosi at 7pm on Thursday 5 November after an eventful 9 hour journey from Uyuni. I jumped straight into a taxi (basically a normal family car with a small 'taxi' sticker on it) and headed for my hostel. On checking in, there was not a private single room available so I was given a very large room with 4 beds, private bathroom and a big TV. I walked around the town and went for dinner before returning to my room for a relatively early night. After breakfast on Friday I walked around the town and took some pictures. There were a few parades passing through the streets and also a stage with live music near the plaza. In the cafe/restaurant that I went to for lunch, I was served by 2 boys who ... read more

We managed to get the last 2 seats out of Sucre, and as it was a holiday our arrival to Potosi saw most of the city shut down. Along the way we had seen plenty of the cemeteries full of people celebrating All Souls Day. Potosi is another World Heritage Site and the worlds highest city at 4060m. We both felt the altitude here having come from Sucre. I won´t go in to the history too much, but Potosi had a fascinating history, the mountain Cerri Rico behind provided enough Silver to bankroll the Spanish economy for a couple hundred years. It was at one time the largest and most important city in all South America. It now only has a small colonial centre, with a more rundown feel than than Sucre. We came here to ... read more

Still a bit drowsy from the overnight bus from La Paz, I arrived in Uyuni on Wed 28/10, still undecided on whether to do a 1 or 3 day tour of the Salar de Uyuni, the world´s largest salt flat. Given my recent bus experiences I didn´t want to sit in a Jeep for 3 days (they let you out for 20 minutes at a time) so I chose to do a 2 day tour of the Salar and a couple of the lagunas. The Salar was absolutely beautiful, although I imagine it can get old very quickly. However, despite my recent success in getting cool people on my tours I ended up in the car with 4-50 year old Israeli men. Not to promote stereotypes, but they yelled at each other, at the guide (in ... read more

And so to Bolivia - a big change from the places we'd been prior to this in South America. The poverty level was evident from the moment we crossed the border, however we were still greeted at each small street stall with a smile and a friendly run down of their wares (and without the high pressure sales techniques we'd experienced in South East Asia). We had heard a few horror stories about the buses in Bolivia, and were a little anxious when we saw the state of the first bus we had to take to get to Tupiza... however it made it the 6 hours along very bumpy dirt roads in tact (as did we!). We immediately loved Tupiza, it's relaxed and friendly and set in a lovely area. There are lovely little food stalls ... read more

Like a lot of places in Bolivia Potosi starts with "The hightest ...... in the world". I dont really have much to say about Potosi, it's an old silver mining town that still has active silver mines where tourists can do tours. We didn't bother doing any tours because we heard enough of the stories about the conditions from other tourists and after our 4WD tour we needed a break. So this entry is really just so I dont forget that I visited the city. I dont even have any photos we just took in Bolivia. The locals wouldnt let us take any photos for some reason but they nearly all dress in traditional Bolivian dress, it´s realy nice because you really feel like you are visiting somewhere very different.... read more

It is about 2am and from our window we are looking down upon the clouds. A full moon illuminates a blanket of white candyfloss with only peaks of chocolate mountains piercing through. A sight that reminded me of a plane journey at night, even the bumpy ride resembles turbulence. But we are not on a plane. We are on an overnight bus climbing from Tarija to Potosi crossing over the Cordilleras de Chichas on a dusty unpaved road. We are leaving behind the highest vineyards in the world and heading to the highest city in the world. Potosi sits at 13,500 feet (4060 metres) above sea level and has a harsh climate. It was so cold at night in our hotel room that Jessica and I slept with our clothes on inside our sleeping bags, under ... read more
