BA to Mercedes to Carlos Pelligini After a nine hour bus journey north of BA we arrived in sleepy (comaesque) town of Mercedes. The bus was very comfortable and allowed for some short bursts of sleep. It was as i awoke from one of these bursts that i seen how treachorous road conditions had become. Extreme fog, and in the distance two headlighjts fast approaching. my heart began to race, it was heading right at us, was dreaming? i couldn´t stare away. In a matter of seconds it would plough straight mangalong our bodies all over Fleecha buses reclining seats. alas it passed by peacefully on it own side of the road, my heart retreating from my mouth until the next near miss. Twenty or thirty near misss later the fog dispersed and we arrived in ... read more

From BsAs to Iguazu falls was a very long stretch. Broken up into a couple of camping stops. The first along the Uruguay river, separating Argentina from the country the river was named after. Big storm, lots of rain, and some people sleeping on a bus (who had forgotten to put their tent up properly before the downpore)... The second stop, for a few nights, was on sort of an island: San Carlos Pellegrini. It´s in the north of Argentina, in their version of the wetlands. By now we´d already found out why they´re called ´wetlands´, but, there would be more to come. We had a quiet boat cruise in the morning, enjoying the wildlife (cayman, capibarris, plenty of birds, deer, etc etc), and also getting to grips with these ´floating´islands of lush green vegitation. Now ... read more

Hola We left Iguazu and headed for the Iberas Marshes - this was kind of my idea because of the fantastic wildlife on offer. We knew it would be a long trek but not quite as bad as it was - a ten hour bus journey, followed by a 3 hour bus journey, followed by another 3 hours bus journey (this time in a very old, beat up bus on a very rough gravel track that kept dissapearing into vast pot holes). Anyway after all that i can say that it was utterly worth it. The wildlife was unbelievable - Capybaras (or brown moomins as Heather called them), Caimen, marsh deer, howler monkeys and loads of different birds species. To Heathers delight there were also hundreds of frogs and toads, including a huge toad (the size ... read more

After our quick tour of the Jesuit ruins, we grabbed a bus to Posadas the capital of Misiones province and tried to figure out where to go next. Our destination was a small town called Colonial Carlos Pelegrinni, situated on the second largest wetland in South America behind the Pantanal of Southern Brazil and Paraguay, but harbouring the same ecosystem. The wetland, whose name is the Reserva de los Esteros del Ibera (Ibera meaning brilliant waters in Guarani), comprises over 1.3 million hectares and occupies over 14% the province of Corrientes in which it finds itself. There is only limited access to this part of Argentina and so our options for travel were somewhat limited. It was 5pm, and we had been travelling since 7 this morning, Laurence and I were both tired and were not ... read more

Dear all: The year of 2006 is rapidly coming to an end and I can hardly believe that I have now embarked on my journey throughout South America! As you have already noticed, I have been postponing my travel blogs since mid-October mostly due to my hectic semester in Buenos Aires. Now that I have completed my academic semester, I will be catching up on my previous travel blogs and sending them to you...I should have updated all of them for a fresh start for the year 2007! You can therefore expect several different travel blogs from me in the next days! Let's now begin with this update! Carlos Pelligrini This travel blog consists of the third and last chapter of a 10-day adventure in the Northern provinces of Missiones and Corrientes. After admiring the impressive ... read more

My first time off after 3 weeks working at the ranch - my god it was a hard slog - Anne and I spent the weekend at Ibera Provincial Reserve. Well technically we were staying at the tiny town of Carlos Pellegrini (population 500 or so) but the town is right next to the reserve. The reserve is very new - only 25 years old i think - so the alligators are all young and not too big (because there were a huge amount of poachers hunting them before) and the place is quite quiet. The other reason for the lack of visitors is that apparently not many Argetineans can afford to come. It came as quite a sad shock when I realised that most Argentineans can't afford to see all the amazing beautiful parts of ... read more

The esteros of ibera wetlands are the 2nd largest in SA, very similar to the pantanal in brazil, but more easily accessed (not in the middle of the continent) and much less developed and touristy. its still not easy to get there, you have to take a bus to a small town and from there get a ride in a 4x to the small town across the marsh, carlos pellegrini. its a very small town, dirt roads, very peaceful. we (jess and i) enjoyed walking around town, buying vegetables out of some lady´s garden, buying bread at the bakers house, ordering our dinner at a local comedor (basically eating in someones kitchen) around noon so itd be ready by dinner. the esteros are very much like the everglades, you take a boat tour to see the ... read more

Hola I have been into the wilderness for a while, but Im now back in the world with Internet! We went to get our boat across the river to Argentina, but it turned out we should have booked, and it was full! So we lugged our rucksacks back up the hill and to the bus station! I am really glad, because as always in these situations, it works out for the best.. had we got on the boat we wouldnt have made friends with a lady from Paraguay and her 10 year old son- Ale, and we wouldnt have whiled away the hours on the bus playing spiderman top trumps with Ale, and we wouldnt be fluent in spanish numbers! We arrived in Mercedes, an outback town in Argentina - with nothing much going on! However ... read more

Just some pics of my night camping at Colonia Carlos Pellegrini. Arrived at sunset to set up camp by the lagoon. I had the whole place to myself, so it was lovely and quiet.... The weather was fantastic - about 27C and a light breeze. Took some time to chill out and take some photos before it got dark. I was expecting a barrage of mosquitos and other creepy crawlies at dusk, but they didn´t eventuate (quite disappointed really, after all of those injections and antibiotics). Had a semi-decent night´s sleep after so may bus rides, and woke up pretty early because my tent was warming up in the sun. I popped my ead out of the tent to see what the weather was like, and nearly fell over when I saw a wild capybara just ... read more
