Amazingly the handover of the car the next morning passed with no extra charges being added or damages. Sam had driven very carefully but it was along roads that were really only fit for a 4x4. Having made friends with an English guy called Alex who was in our dorm we set out together towards the Circuito Chico a road circuit around no less than 8 lakes and all to the backdrop of the Argentinian Andes. It was a beautifully sunny autumn day and after figuring out which bus we needed to get we arrived at one of the many bike hire shops and paid out 80AR for the day hire. We also met a girl from London called Jennifer also hiring a bike from the same place. So all kitted out with our maps, safety ... read more

As I wrote last time, I spontaneously changed hostel when I arrived in Bariloche. The reason why I did that was the following: when I arrive in a new city I first look for a map to have an idea where the hostel is. Well, in contrast to what they claimed on their homepage, the hostel I booked is quite far from the centre. Since it's low season in Bariloche, Rubby - a Venezolano who works for the hostel where I'm staying now - was at the terminal and offered dorms to the arriving tourists. That's how I landed in this hostel 'freedom'. It's a bit...hippie, a bit alternative...but the people are great and it's surprisingly well organised. It's one of the hot spots for all the groups from Israel who travel Argentina, but there are ... read more

Again a wonderful trip from San Martín de los Andes to Bariloche! The colours of Patagonia are amazing and the wind quite strong. Here in Bariloche, I spontaneously changes hostel and I am now in a very cool hostel called freedom, I'll spend 4 days in this region and hope for good weather! Buenas noches a todos! Ps: I forgot to mention somebody I met in San Martín: Andrés from Córdoba who lives now in Spain. He studied something different, but he loves painting and would like to do this for living. He already sold several paintings and will probably get the opportunity to show his paintings in Switzerland. Have a look at his homepage: www.bongiovanni.com... read more

On the second night at the casino, after a couple of bottles of 9 peso wine (about 1 pound fifty each!) that was surprisingly nice, we came away with 440 pesos between us! We were very happy indeed as it paid for our accomadation and food for the next day as well as the bus fare to Chalten! However, the subsequent lack of sleep and very bumpy bus ride along Ruta 40 were not great for two hungover and tired travellers! We arrived at Chalten at about 1pm, looked around for a hostel, found one and went to sleep! We were up at 6am the next day after a very good night´s sleep, hoping to be able to do some ice trekking on Glacier Grande near El Chalten, having been told to be there at 6.45. ... read more

We had decided to pay a little extra for a cama bus for the 17hour journey from Mendoza to Bariloche. We arrived at the coach station as the sun was setting and we were seated by 8pm in our huge leather seats right at the front of the bus. The seats were so big that there were only 3 seats wide. We were served steak and red wine as the sun set and we started making our way south following the line of the Andes. It was a lot esaier sleeping with the comfort of these seats, but the usual irritation of other passengers remained. We slept well and were woken for breakfast at 6am by our host, still wearing his serving white gloves which were the first things that you saw everytime he came to ... read more

From Buenos Aires I took a 22-hour bus trip south to Bariloche in the Argentinian lake district. Bariloche is on the edge of a large lake with spectacular mountains in the background, and is one of five large lakes in the area. I hired a car with a friend and we drove around some of the lakes. Everywhere we stopped she said that here would be a place beautiful enough to stop several days with a tent and some food (for an example see the first photograph). We swam in some of the lakes and the water was fairly cold. Another thing I tried was Curanto (which means 'hot stones' in the Araucano language). First they heat up stones with wood, then remove the wood, then put a layer of leaves over the stones, then put ... read more

Day 15: After another day at school and our brains overfilled with Spanish we headed to a local restaurant called Alberto´s with fellow students Jan (IRE), Daphne (HOL) and Belen (DEU). I had a huge (and I mean huge!) lasagne stuffed with egg, bolognese, ham and peperroni for just 35 pesos, about 6 pounds, and the company was great with a lot of banter flying around! That night we headed to a local bowling alley which was shorter than those back home and then played pool (I´m winning the trip series 5-4 so far!), then met up with Jonny, Amos, Will and Harry (all ENG) in their hostel for a drink or two. All was fine until Alex came in about an hour after me at 3am, triggering a ridiculously loud house alarm that woke everyone ... read more

South America » Argentina » Río Negro » El Bolsón March 10th 2011

El Bolson is a town 2 hours south of Bariloche. It is described as very hippie, which I would agree with because it was extremely laid back and full of people with dreads. However, getting to El Bolson was anything was laid back...not surprising though considering our luck with buses. We arrived at the bus terminal in Bariloche an hour early in order to make sure we did not miss the bus. The ticket window, however, was not open for the entire day so I spent a lot of my time asking people about our bus and being sent to other people. Finally I found out that our bus would be arriving an hour late (1 pm). At 1 Pm still no bus...I am told we just need to wait. At 2 pm...still no bus...still told we ... read more
