Buenos Aires ("Good Airs" in Spanish, originally meaning "Fair Winds") is the capital of Argentina and its largest city and port, as well as one of the largest cities in Latin America. The people of Buenos Aires are known as porteños ("people of the port"), acknowledging the major historical importance of the port in the development of the city and the whole nation. Buenos Aires is, in a certain way, a metaphor for Argentina. Its streets and surroundings gather over half of the country's population and represent its political, economic and cultural heart. It was home for Argentine writers Jorge Luis Borges, Adolfo Bioy Casares, Ernesto Sábato and Victoria Ocampo. And Maria Eva Duarte (Evita Peron), Carlos Gardel (a synonym of tango ), latin American revolutionary and political leader Ernesto Guevara de la Serna, not to ... read more

Geo: -34.6118, -58.4173We liked Buenos Aires very much. A beautiful city. Felt much safer than guides had indicated it would. Eclectic, exuberant architecture. Very beautiful parks, many parks. Some with artificial lakes. Of course, we were there on a gorgeous Sunday -- and so everyone was out, enjoying themselves. The atmosphere was wonderful. After the city tour, to airport. On flight, slept well - a little bumpy at times but otherwise okay. At Dulles, easy through immigration; bags waiting; to RCC. One hour wait before flight to LAX. Ended up being last to board but made it. Clear most of the way across the country. Only once in LA was it overcast. Mexican lunch in LAX. Then on to SFO.... read more

No dramas getting from plane to hotel. Rucksack showed up on the carousel - always a bonus! Booked "remise" taxi from counter in airport lobby. Big posters everywhere warning not to take a taxi with a tout. Could be the last taxi you ever take! Driver was called Hector. Nice bloke, no habla Ingles, but was determined to tell me all about B.A. Surprisingly, I actually understood some of what he said. Asked him who he supported. "River Plate", says he. Asked me my team. "Charlton Athletic in Ingliterra", says I. "Oh", says he, "yes, but what is your team in Argentina?" So, obviously I had to follow a team that mattered as well! And they call us parochial! Fobbed him off with Independiente. "Campeones", says I. You don't often get to say that in SE7. ... read more

Flew from Heathrow via Mardid to Buenos Aires. JD gave me a lift and said he'd pick me up from Gatwick on 10th March. Most decent of him, I must say. Made connection in Madrid with minutes to spare and settled in for 13 hour flight. Two shite movies: Sweet Home Alabama and The Tuxedo which were, at least, in English.... read more

1999……….6wks SOUTH AMERICA-ARGENTINA, PERU 17th August, 1999 Buenos Aires I can’t sleep. I hadn’t realized Buenos Aires was so far from OZ and that I would get so jet-lagged. It’s confusing to know or feel what day it is. What I still can’t work out is that I was going ahead in time and yet when I get to Buenos Aires having travelled about 15 hrs from Sydney with transit in New Zealand, it’s still the same day. No wonder my body feels weird with feeling tired but not wanting to sleep and a bit of a headache. The international airport is 35km from the centre and the shuttle bus costs US$14 one way. The city was remarkably quiet because of siesta time but the peatonales (pedestrian malls) which go for whole blocks were busy with ... read more

I signed up for shuffleboard and scrabble. At 3:00 we went to Spanish class where we learned how to say "la grabadora" - the tape recorder. At 5:30 there was a Happy Hour in Club Andes. After dinner they had horse races wooden horses on a marked tarp. For four of the races, I got to move some of the horses. In the "Filly Race" they picked six ladies among which was my mom.
