South America » Argentina » Buenos Aires » Tandil April 15th 2005

Last weekend we went to Tandil with half the group. Tandil is about 5 hours south of Buenos Aires by bus, but still in the province of Buenos Aires. It lies right in the middle of the "sierras"(hills). The province of Buenos Aires is completely flat except for Tandil which has many hills. Tandil is known for its moving rock that doesn't move anymore. The main attraction of Tandil was a rock that used to move when it was pushed. It was an enormous rock, but it fell in the early 1900s, so now people go to see the rock that used to move. Tandil is more of a place to go and relax and is where a lot of Argentines go for a quick outdoorsy vacation. It also seems like a lot of people in ... read more

After a wonderful week with Becca in Mendoza it was off to Buenos Aires. I decided to treat myself (not that I hadn't already been treating myself every day) to Andesmar's Primera Clase bus service to the capital. For 125 pesos (about 40 bucks) I would ride in style into the big city. Thats right, fully reclining leather seats, champagne, all the mendozan red wine you can drink, mediocre meals (certainly a step up from the airplane food they normally serve aboard Andesmar) and the company of fellow rich people. I was tired of riding with the riffraff you normally encounter on "normal" buslines, so it was nice to have civilized company for a change (i say this with a heavy dose of sarcasm). but it was nice. similar to first class on a plane, only ... read more

I finally settled on an apartment...see pictures. It is so difficult to find a place with short term leases, fully furnished, etc, etc, so I went with a friend of a friend who I knew wouldn't charge me a lot. My first time signing a lease in Spanish too, it took me a good 20 minutes to read and understand it all. It's a nice little one bedroom place with a terrace and full kitchen, in a great area with cool restaurants/bars/cafés only steps away. I've signed a lease for a month and then will try to share a larger place after that with some others to make it cheaper and more fun (I could also practice more Spanish this way). I do have a TV in my apt now, so this is also a great ... read more

Hey everyone Since we last updated this site a whole lot has happened so grab a cuppa and read on. You'll notice that we've managed to put more photos on too, so you can see for yourselves what we've been up to this past few weeks. Mendoza was an absolute blast! Loads of things to do in the day, loads of places to go at night, and full of the bright young things of Argentina due to its huge University population. We became the all action foursome over the course of this stage of our trip, which began with horse riding last Saturday. Having never tried horse riding before I for one was pretty pensive. We arrived at the ranch and met 4 other travellers who would be joining us on a "gentle trek through the ... read more

Break on through to the other side….finally back in BA and haven’t looked back since. The city has such a great “vibe” to it; hustle and bustle, people everywhere, crazy drivers, beautiful parks and European looking buildings, next to colourful Latin style houses and barrios of every type, from the filthy rich to dirt poor. Graffiti on side streets placing blame on the demise of the peso only 3 years ago now land locking Argentines to their own country. Cafés and open air restaurants fill tree branch draped streets while internet cafes, phone centers and shopping malls display the continued western influence. Exhaust from the busses and plentiful taxis racing about are masked by the smells of fresh empanadas and breads flowing out of little corner stores. To top it off, you divide everything by three…$5 ... read more

- Food: Discovered little local places to eat which were cheaper and better. - Area: Tigre is very pretty and not depressing after all (but still a ghost town). A longer boat trip on the delta would´ve been better. - People: Tourist info centre in Tigre has friendly, efficient staff. Overall, I found the Argentinians to be very friendly and mostly beautiful! Even though we only seemed to be in the places where the older crowds hung out (bed too early to see the young out to play!) Thur 7th: After not much sleep on the bus I nearly had my first loss. Left my jacket on the coach but luckily after a bit of hoo-hah got it back. The nice men in the reception at La Perla recognised us which made me feel at home! ... read more

- Food: La Perla hotel breakfasts fab, tortilla at last, 'interesting' meal on the coche cama (overnight sleeper bus) - Area: My first football match fantastic, La Boca area not so fantastic although colourful houses were pretty. Tigre - depressing ghost town feel. - People: La Perla staff v helpful, La Boca locals not as 'dodgy' as the guide books say, River Plate fans very tuneful with their constant football songs. - Weather: Still nice and warm Sun 3rd April: Thank god we knew enough about cab fares in B.A. as we stupidly got in a cab at the airport at midnight without checking the fare or the meter. He tried to charge us five times the amount! My Spanish soon improved, along with the tutting to get him down to near enough the right price. ... read more
