Ahh, what a fabulous city this is…….haven’t felt so at home anywhere for a long time, if you’ve got to live in a city then this is probably iit! My little friend was telling me the other night about a giant frog that lives around here and it has teeth!..Well, I couldn't just let that go past, frogs don't have teeth I replied. Then it was on...all sorts of memories, anecdotes, we had the wait staff at the bar involved, later, taxi drivers, bystanders, people on the street. She had a definite advantage, she speaks espanol, so she could ask the question and filter the answers..I understand enough about espanol and also arguments with women to let it go! We live on Esmeralda Street…now doesn’t that conjure up visions of classy, glittering elegance…the reality is a ... read more

Sometimes it´s hard saying Goodbye to some places and Buenos Aires is one of them. The French in me enjoyed the arquitecture and culture, and the Australian in me loved the partying. Here I was, sipping my submarino (hot milk with melted bar of chocolate) at one of the numerous cafes and catching with a delight of recognition my neighbour dunking his medialuna (small croissant) in his coffee! (I was called weird in Ozland for doing just that!). Buenos Aires - 1st time (2nd Dec-15th Dec) Living in the city: Buenos Aires was for me a good compromise between living in a city (being central was very handy) and still experiencing something exotic. Having travelled for 4 months in poorer parts of South America, BA was a refreshing place where I could enjoy the shopping, the ... read more

South America » Argentina » Buenos Aires » Mar del Plata December 30th 2005

Hi everyone, Its a shame to say but another year has passed and im still living the dream!!! In a quaint little beach town called mar del plata, which for you dummards who dont speak two languages fluently like me is translated to sea of silver.... Hardly cause the sea here looks like toilet water from bubba-joes crapper in the d-block, but we have to make do with what we have RIGHT??? No its a great town just not what i expected, i was hoping for small little island town with sandy roads and dogs running around everywhere with crystal waters and well you get me, and got big city with more people in it than people that queue outside of Kazachstans only mcdonalds. So we have had a few great nights here and now its ... read more

Navigates his way around the world then gets lost in a backyard blog!....I found the problem!...I backdated that blog "The Pear-shaped Puzzle" and its back in the pack at 2nd Dec. Ooops. But thanks to all the responses...its sort of gratifying to know there are so many of you still folowing the trail. But for those of you saving it for some verification later, well, that's another story...I mean some of these things have actually happened, some have happened to others, some have happened in my head.....some might have happened...I don't think any of them have maliciously not happened.....and over time some may happen in the future..my only aim is to try and paint the picture of whats going thru' my hhead at any given point of time ..and hope you an share the vision...its not ... read more

Starting this morning in Montevideo, Uruguay, we walked around the city to find out that the city is alive and kicking. Locals go to work, cars are zooming all around us, and shops are open. We managed to purchase some souvenirs from Uruguay, including from a flea market at Plaza Constitution. Montevideo doesn´t have much to offer tourists, so we decided to leave the city earlier than scheduled by successfully changing the tickets to the one o´clock Buquebus. Things went smoothly except for a little incident on my Argentine visa (surprise, surprise), but it got sorted out after a few explanations in English. We got on the three hour ferry ride from Montevideo to Buenos Aires, which was a time for me to catch up with my journal entries. Ryan took a long nap on the ... read more

The fantastic travelblog people are working on recovering it but I'm wondering if anyone had the foresight to download it to their computer?...if so I would be very grateful to get it back!...as you might know, I never keep a backup and rarely even re-read them so I can't go back and do it again!......however, now I have my little lappo, courtesy of Ted's trip to the states, I shall be doing them on this and keeping a copy... Thanks for all your cards and messages and really thoughtful pressies, it was great to recieve a bag full of goodies via Andrew and Susan and really exciting when we arrived at the Hilton and there were christmas cards waiting for us. As you know we had been disappointed with the lack of Christmas cheer in the run up to Christmas as we faithfully towed our own mini chritmas tree (arbolito) around with us to cheer up dingy hostel rooms - but everything changed the minute we arrived in BA. On our first night we met up with Andrew and Susan who are out here on holiday and went out for a parilla (steak house). As happens out here in South America we turned a corner and found ourselves in the middle of a carnaval. Possibly ... read more
