** I always thought that I would love to live by the sea/To travel the world alone and live more simply/I have no idea what’s happened to that dream/’Cause there’s really nothing left here to stop me** “Life For Rent” - Dido There are few better things to do in this world than start your morning sitting quietly next to the ocean, using all your senses to take in the world surrounding you. The calming rhythm of the waves coming in, going out, coming in again. The feel of warm sand under your feet and between your toes. The sun and breeze on your skin, through your hair, in your pores. The water lapping at your ankles and every once in awhile reminding you of it’s power to take you by surprise and wetting the ... read more

To Mar del Plata Because of Holy Week, we had no classes Thursday afternoon or Friday. In keeping with the solemnity of Easter week, we decided to go to Mar del Plata, a beach resort town. Since summer is just ending down here, Holy Week is kind of like Labor Day Weekend, one last hurrah before winter. The news said that 200,000 Argentinians descended on Mar del Plata for the weekend. We picked a good time to get out of Buenos Aires as Thursday night there were large protests throughout the city - businesses burned and looted, etc. Mar del Plata was beautiful though. Typical beach town with lots of nice houses and packed beaches. The night life was typical of Argentina and I managed to see the sun come up on two consecutive mornings. We ... read more

One very cool thing that I forgot to mention was that we got to see comet McNaught while camping. Apparently, it is the brightest comet in the southern hemisphere in 30 years. It could be seen streaking across the sky right after sunset low on the horizon, so by the time it got really dark it was already gone. But we could still see it very well. Diego thought there was some kind of fire in the distance. We missed the brightest point by a few days, but it was so cool. Don´t get to see that too often. Tobias was delighted, since his hobby as a kid was astronomy. Funny thing is, the first night we met, we had this ongoing debate between which planet was Mercury and which was Venus. Nobody else on the ... read more

Finished my two weeks on the cardinal project and now I find myself in Mar Del Plata, vacation hot spot for people who live in Buenos Aires. Talk about extremes! From camp, population 6 to Mar del Plata, population 542,000. Probably more like 600,000 since it is the peak season, where the streets are swarming with Argentine tourists. I still can´t mesh. Vendors pick me out easily as someone who is ¨Not from around here¨ probably due to my height, among other things. I stand a head taller than most people, especially the women. So they think I´m European, since that´s where most foreiners are from. Luciano made a point that Argentina takes after Europe, where Chile takes after the United States. Interesting separation. Over all, this place resembles Buenos Aires without the charm of cobble ... read more

... read more

Well, it is Sunday night, the last day of a real weekend as my classes start tomorrow. I am sitting at the corner restaurant while sipping on my café con leche…the place is packed with people watching (and screaming at) the Sunday soccer match. You can definitely tell who is the foreigner…I am the only one turning my back to the TV! We just spent few days in Mar del Plata, a city located on the East coast of Argentina at about 400 kilometres from Buenos Aires. The bus trip to Mar del Plata was truly pleasant as we bought tickets for full-reclining seats, meaning that you can sleep horizontally the entire way. A luxury that we will not be able to buy once travelling in Bolivia or Peru. The landscape was mostly made of fields ... read more

After nearly a month in Buenos Aires, with no sight of the ocean, it was great to arrive in Mar del Plata. A resort town located about 5 hours south of Buenos Aires, this place is where the porteños (Locals from Bs.As.) come to play. The town is full of fancy restaurants and bars, nightclubs and many hotels. Tourists and Argentineans alike come for one thing... the sun and the sand. The beach in Mar del Plata is pretty sweet, stretching for a couple of kilometres and winding its way around many points and bays. The sand is nice and the waves are hypnotizing, what a great place to spend my 25th birthday. Wow, 25 years and I find myself in Mar del Plata, Argentina. Not bad. Laurence suggested that we go somewhere before she started ... read more
