... read more

Hola from Mar Del Plata 3 weeks into this epic adventure and it has been amazing. Hard to believe that we will be doing this for another 3 months, tough job but somebody has to do it !! Hope you have all had a great Xmas and have managed to avoid the nasty flu bug that seems to have hit the UK.Sunstroke and dehydration are the main concerns here. North West Argentina Circuito De La Quebrada We were fortunate to be able to sort out an English speaking guide in Jujuy for a day trip along some of Route 9 which runs north to the Bolivian border and connects with routes west to Chile. Gabriel picked us up on the morning of 19th Dec and we had a fascinating day learning about the region which has history ... read more

A very exuberant weekend in Mar de Plata followed the relaxing Easter Holidays. Over the Easter weekend my friends from Colorado and the CU Women's rugby team arrived bearing necessities and gifts from up north. The most exciting of them being a stockpile of peanut butter! A care package my Mom put together included a birthday gift of a fully loaded MP3 player (thanks Bro!), a lot of Tabasco, magazines in English, various spices to heat up our otherwise very sweet palate of food, my favorite snack foods including Craisins and Luna Bars and, of course, extra underwear. Thanks Mom! Thanks to the CU girls, Dain recieved his camera and was elated by this gift. The familiar faces were also a gift in itself. We were quickly caught up on all the inside rugby happenings in ... read more

A weekend at the Beach Last weekend was a much needed break from literally a week of solid pouring rain. It rained so hard that in my 40 min walk home from work the seams of my umbrella began to split under the pressure!!! Buenos Aires had ridiculous floods causing them to hold a rope and wade through 3 and a half feet of water at the corners! Obviously they have drainage system issues here and the government again promised to fix them with an underground piping system.. But of course this promise was made last year as well.... So in order to escape my FSD group travelled 5 and a half hours south to Mar del Plata, a huge beach resort town. Turns out that when classes start in March all of the Jubilados (Retired) ... read more

Friday, after I wrote the last blog, I tried to rest up as much as I could until the concert. I ended up waiting over 30 minutes for the bus and it eventually came. The concert started late (like most things in Argentina), so I didn´t miss anything. I saw Santiago and Leandro, and Lucas outside, we drank a little Fernet & Coca-cola and went inside to wait for the show. Front row. The place was actually packed...probably about 100 people and at times every one of them were clapping, and pumping their fists in the air to the music. Almas Mugrientas put on a good show (www.almasmugrientas.com.ar) and afterwards we headed to an outdoor plaza in San Telmo for a beer. While we sat, there were two fights around the plaza. One was a brawl ... read more

So the school set up a weekend trip for Plata del Mar, a beach town south of Bs As. It was pretty expensive, 350 pesos, but it included transportation to and from Mar del Plata and a ticket for the biggest game in Argentina, Boca Juniors vs River Plate. I don't know why they are called those names. Rather different I know but try to explain to someone outside of America why we have teams called Mets or Sooners. I decided to go on the trip because, really, what the hell else am I going to do. I started playing football once a week here and really enjoy it. The entire world loves football with the exception of America and they just dont understand why we dont. I really don't either. I would rather watch the ... read more

Two games of football took place this weekend in the coastal area of Mar Del Plata. The first was a tight affair, involving players recruited from all over the world and played with flair and passion in egual measures. The second was Boca Juniors Vs River Plate which I will come onto later. This first match took place on the beach during the afternoon prior to "El Superclasico". A team of four unlikely but determined Europeans took on a bunch of tanned, toned argnetine primadonnas with the pride of our respective continets at stake. Our team comprised of myself, Jamie (also from London), Nick (from Holland) and Luis (from somewhere in Eatern Europe, i never round to asking him). The Argentines were confident, even arrogant prior to kick off, but in this game of four a ... read more

Well, maybe a few butts... We discovered Sir Mixalot´s inspiration at Mar del Plata - and it wasn´t pretty. The thong is all the rage in the beach town south of Buenos Aires, so butts abound. And beach etiquette makes for full back views. Instead of getting their bronze on sprawled across towels, Argentines stand in small groups chatting with their feet in the chilly Pacific with their backsides facing the crowd. Our friends, Tristen and James, were nice enough to invite us to their timeshare in Mar del Plata. The Andersons also left their jobs in their home state of Cali and are traveling around the world for a year. That´s right, around the world! They´re adventurous, generous and fun, fun, fun. They´re also extreme - we met them on an Extreme canopy tour through ... read more
