Cloister

Catedral Basilica de Santiago de Compostela - Santiago Cathedral. Cloister. In the center is the Fons Mirabilis, a Romanesque granite fountain. It previously stood at the Cathedral's northern entrance where up to 15 pilgrims could stand around it and away the dust and dirt of the Camino de Santiago before entering the Cathedral. "The Cloisters (Claustro), entered from the S. transept (near the Puerta de Platerias), were built by Archbp. Fonseca in1521-46 in the plateresque style, and are among the largest and most beautiful in Spain. The walks are 115 ft. long and 19 ft. wide. — Adjoining the cloisters is the Sala Capitular, the walls of which are hung with tapestry, executed in Flanders and Madrid from designs by Teniers and Bayeu".--Baedeker 1913.
