West Martello Tower

West Martello Tower. The martellos were built in 1862 by Union forces during the Civil War. "The military built environment was augmented by many structures, the most noteworthy of which were two small masonry forts called Martello Towers, built on the island's southern shore to protect that uninhabited area". In our cabin mailbox arrived a warning notice: our port call at Key West would be during the annual Fantasy Fest. Passengers were cautioned they might see some outrageous things ashore!
