Oceans and Seas » Atlantic September 19th 2008

It was a ROUGH night last night at sea. I was woken up around 3am to terrible shaking and noises that sounded like we were scrapping the bottom of the ocean. Of course we weren’t, as the bottom is thousands of feet below sea level. It was simply us hitting the water after a big swell. This continued for the rest of the night, into the morning, and still this afternoon. I was able to sleep but was woken many times throughout the night. The shampoo bottles in my shower tipped over and continued to roll around. Nicole and Steph lost everything off their night table. Training this morning was even cancelled for new staff, as people were getting up and puking in the middle of it. Lisa worked the centre this morning and said that ... read more

Sunday, September 14, 2008 Well, after being forgotten at our hotel, calling the port agent to remind him of where we were, being dropped off at the ship only to wait in a small holding room for an hour, we were finally brought onto the ship later than all the rest of the new boarding staff (there were about 8 of us late to board). Upon arrival, we were given paperwork to fill out and told to head down to personnel, where I happened to run into my youth supervisor! Her name is Linda. She’s from Peru. I have yet to practice my Spanish with her, but I warned her that I must just bust it out. I’ve met quite a few others on board as well. There are two other new youth counsellors (YCs) doing ... read more

Geo: 44.8048, 20.4781After a long, suffering over night bus ride, we arrived in Belgrade at 8am . It had a very different feel to it than Bosnia and Croatia. We didn't waste time any time and headed straight to the hostel. It was a bit of shame that we couldn't check in yet. So we hung around the common room which was in the basement- nice and cool too! The guy at reception warned us that today was going to be a very hot day, near 50 degrees. After we cooled nap and had a little snooze on the lounge we ventured out into the heat. It was unbearable! We managed to drag our feet to a little unknown place called McDonalds. It was one of those times where you just want to go somewhere where ... read more

For anyone reading this, please bear with me. I'm going to be publishing blogs at random for a bit. They will jump around, and most will not have been written at the entry date. Coming home is a tough thing. Your adventure is over, and you're dying for you own bed. You've met (and re-met) all sorts of great people. You've had new adventures, seen things you never though you would, and, for better or worse, done deeds you did not think possible. Both the good and the bad. The consequences of both are still not known. As for Monkey, he was there for the good, and fortuneatly absent for the bad. He's asleep in the seat next to me. Probably dreaming of Puffins, Minke Whales, Arctic Terns, Eider Ducks, and lots of cows, sheep and ... read more

Geo: 43.8607, 18.4214We started the day off with a tour of the war time tunnels. The city was in a siege for over 1400 days. The war time tunnels were how the city survived. Our guide was amazing. We were lucky enough to have a mini-van to ourselves. We started our Tunnel Tour by driving down Sniper Alley and then onto the house near the airport where the entrance/exit to the tunnel is. ... read more

Geo: 43.8608, 18.4214It was about a two hour train journey to Sarajevo. Seats were not allocated and we tried to elbow our way onto the train- like the locals did, but we wasted time trying to get seats altogether. So we missed out on seats, instead we shared 3 seats between the 7 of us- taking in turns. It wasn't too bad. The scenery was amazing. Luckily our carriage had entertainment, a group of local guys with a guitar and lots of beer. When we arrived in Sarajevo the majority of the group wanted to walk to the hostel, I was not impressed. The tram at the train station would take us straight to the hostel- it could have been so easy. So we started walking, we didn't follow the tram tracks, no we followed the ... read more

Geo: 43.34, 17.81Today was our last day in Mostar, having seen most of the sights we decided to catch a local bus to a nearby village that we read about in the guide book. After waiting for 45 minutes at the bus stop in very hot sun, us 6 girls gave up and decided to spend the day relaxing in Mostar. We had a long lunch, very tasty and local cuisine. It was a really nice restaurant, outdoor table in the shade of the warm sun- so good. We then went down to the river to wet our feet, the water was so cold! From here we took our last photos of Mostar. Then went for our last wander through the old town. AJ, Rebekah, Shona and I arranged to meet Clare and Celeste at the ... read more
