Thursday January 21st, 2016. At Sea. A lazy day today. Stayed in the cabin until lunch time. Went to the quiz and came second. M spent the rest of the afternoon teaching Stewart how to use MS Word and some of the other features on his laptop. After dinner we gave part II of the Pauline Daniels Shirley Valentine a miss and went up to Scott's bar where we watched Claudia perfom her first cabaret. She had a sore throat so it wasn't great. We stayed for a few disco tunes and then went to bed and read. Rio tomorrow!... read more

Tuesday January 19th, 2016. At Sea and Bridge Tour We went for a posh breakfast for the first time in a few days. We sat with a really interesting couple who live in France and exchanged a few horror stories about French bureaucracy. After breakfast we went on a pre-booked tour of the ship's bridge. This was really very interesting and we were told to "Please not press any buttons"! At 11 am we went to Clive's lecture "Britain in the South Atlantic - St Helena - Paradise or Purgatory". We really enjoyed this as we were on this island early in 2008. The new airport opens in a few weeks time so the island will never be isolated in the same way ever again. After lunch we went to Sue's lecture on "The Pantanal" which ... read more

Sunday January 17th, 2016. Cruising the Atlantic Ocean No breakfast again today. M went to make a butterfly greetings card with Barbara Ashmore. At 11 am we went to Clive's lecture "Brazil - Sunny Smiles and Dark Secrets" which was excellent again. M walked 3 and a half miles on the treadmill before lunch. After lunch we went to Sue Walsh's lecture on hummingbirds. We hope to see a few of these amazing little birds on this trip. We didn't go to the restaurant for dinner as there was a deck party this evening to celebrate our arrival in South America. It started at 9.15 which would be right in the middle of our dinner and we knew we wouldn't get a seat if we went down to the restaurant. We settled for a bowl of ... read more

Saturday January 16th, 2016. Cruising the Atlantic Ocean Nothing much on this morning. Didn't bother with breakfast. At 11 am we went to the lecture by Sue Walsh called "Wildlife of Brazil's Atlantic Coast". She told us about the birds and sea life that we might expect to see from the ship. After the lecture M went on the treadmill for 4 miles (too hot outside now). After lunch we went to watch the Crossing the Line Ceremony on the deck. We did not actually cross the equator until 5 pm but the traditional crossing ceremony was at 2 pm. Here the crew dress up as King Neptune and his entorage plus a doctor and a couple of nurses to punish wayward passengers and crew by covering them in jelly, egg, cream and other lovely sludge. ... read more

Geo: 16.7837, 96.1568From Vietnam, we flew to Yangon (nee Rangoon), the former capital city of Myanmar. Whereas Justin had a vague sense of Vietnam based on previous trips (albeit 18+ years ago), Myanmar was a mystery, an enticing one, but one for which we had no intuition, other than from news reports. Myanmar has been a military dictatorship/junta replete with human rights abuses and accompanying US economic sanctions for decades. A democratic thaw in the junta's grip on power began in 2011 with (largely) free parliamentary elections. Also, the junta has also been fighting a series of low-intensity wars, some of the world's longest-running with 17 various ethnic, religious and and narco-terrorist (heroin production) groups for decades. Thankfully for civilians caught in the crossfire, 14 of these groups signed ceasefires by October 2015. http://... read more

Geo: 18.462, -64.4265Our trip to Virgin Gorda was very enjoyable but had its good and bad aspects, though the good probably outweighed the bad for most of us. Arranging travel to and from Virgin Gorda with seven people was an adventure in itself, almost as much an adventure as the actual traveling. We all drove to Atlanta and spent the night in a motel where we parked our cars, spent the night, and utilized the motel shuttle the next morning to get to the Atlantaairport. We flew from Atlanta to San Juan where we were met by a representative of the air charter company, FlyBVI, who collected our baggage claim tickets, then escorted us to an area where we waited while he collected our luggage. Our pilot met us there in thewaiting area and escorted us ... read more

Friday January 15th, 2016. Cruising the Atlantic Ocean This morning we went to a lecture called "1492: Columbus and America - Falsehoods and Fantasies" by Clive Leatherdale, which was excellent as usual. M walked 3 and a half miles around the deck before lunch. After lunch D went to the photography lecture while M labelled the photographs from Mindelo. At 5.00 we got ready for dinner early in order to attend the Columbus Club Reception. This was a reception for those passengers who had cruised for more than 50 days with Cruise & Maritime. We were given a few drinks and some nibbles and the Captain came round and shook everyone's hands. There were hundreds of passengers there so we weren't elite. We chatted to the Hotel Manager who is from Italy. He introduced us to ... read more

Thursday January 14th, 2016. Cruising the Atlantic Ocean Today was the first of 4 days at sea, crossing the Atlantic Ocean to Recife in Brazil. There was nothing of any interest to either of us on the lecture/craft front this morning so we spent our time reading and doing puzzles. M walked around the deck for 4 miles to try to counter the calories that are readily available 24 hours a day. After lunch we went to the photography lecture which was on how to set up your camera. Later in the afternoon we went to watch the Egg Heads (passengers V crew) quiz which was really funny - mainly because cruise director Ross can't pronounce most of the questions. "He Brides" is the new way to pronounce the Hebrides! Katie - one of the singers ... read more

Tuesday January 12th, 2016. Cruising the Atlantic Ocean En Route to Cabo Verde After a posh breakfast M went to craft with Barbara (who was on the Van Gogh World Cruise) and made a "Lace Card". At 11 am we went to see Clive's lecture on "Cape Verde, Slaves, Wavesand Busted Dreams". This was very interesting. The last time we were in Cabo Verde there were hundreds of real estate sales people trying to flog holiday homes as an alternative, cheaper destination than the Caribbean. Seems that this didn't take off - hence the Busted in the lecture title. A spanking new road has been build from nowhere to nowhere with the expectation that all these flash villas would be built but none have materialised and many prospective owners had their fingers burned with this investment. ... read more

Monday January 11th, 2016. At Sea En Route to Cabo Verde After a posh breakfast we read our books and generally relaxed. Non of the activities appealed to us until 11.00 am when we went to sea the 'Bird Lady' (Sue Walsh) who was giving a lecture on "Bird Ringing and Migration". This was a really interesting lecture. We learned how birds are ringed, the information it gives us on the migration patterns and how we can use this information to help protect endangered birds. We had lunch in the restaurant and then in the afternoon we went to the photography lecture with John Riley. The topic today was 'Photographing Architecture'. After the lecture we went to see Eggheads in the Captain's Club. This was pretty funny with the passengers playing against the crew eggheads. Cruise ... read more
