Geo: 13.8941, -60.9686This morning we docked in Castries the main town on the island country of St Lucia. We disembarked about 8-30am and walked in to the centre of the town along the waterfront. It was another warm, humid day with a threat of rain but the few small showers which fell dissipated quickly. The main square is named after Derek Walcott, a Nobel Prize winning poet who was born here. Within the square is his bust and another of the first black man to win a Nobel Prize both born in this small island, The second was for Economics. The other main feature of the square is the massive 400 year old tree which dominates one corner. We went into the Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception, a large imposing church which takes up one whole ... read more

Geo: -20.0229, -165.241Now to try to catch up on the blog. First off, I manage to send off two days before the Internet dies so that's that. I'll continue writing and processing pictures. I see Kainoa is talking about island activities so, after breakfast, I go down to the 10am lecture a little late and follow up with Melvyn Foster's continuing story of the history of cruise ships, this time concentrating on the early 20th century vessels. Mom is down having fun again doing the laundry. I can't fight it. I guess it's just cheap entertainment for her. I return to the library and when she completes her chores, she meets me and we have a salad in the Lido, then out by the pool where I continue my work. Sitting poolside in the 80F weather ... read more

Geo: 17.0817, -61.8077After six days at sea the sight of land was welcome. I hadseen the first signs on Tuesday afternoon as I walked my laps around the deckas two birds, I think they were boobies, circled the ship. We went to breakfastat 7-30am and could see through the window the coast of Antigua as we met thepilot and then were taken in to dock. We went on deck to watch. The captainseemed to enjoy the crowd watching as he manoeuvred the ship faultlessly intothe wharf. We waited on board for a while to allow the crush of departees todisseminate but there was still a crowd when we got to the gangplank. It was asunny warm day and there were plenty of people to welcome passengers. Archwaysof balloons greeted us as the many taxi drivers, vying ... read more

Geo: -18.6046, -174.012Vava'u is situated in the northern group of islands in the Kingdom of Tonga. Offering pristine beaches, untouched islands and all year round activities like diving, sailing, fishing and whale swimming, it's the travel destination for those looking to ‘get off the beaten trail'. Well, today we're getting off the beaten trail with 1300 other passengers. Today we snorkel at several sites around the islands making up Vava'u. It's a short day for us as all aboard is at 2:30pm. Following our usual minimal breakfast, we rendezvous in the sports bar with the 6 others on our excursion. We're the first ones there, followed by Melinda (Betty) and her husband, Tad, with the others in tow. Then Dale (Kiwi Skiers) shows up with #2 tender tickets for all so we're in the first boat ... read more

Geo: -19.932, -172.485Notice that we had two Wednesdays. One was in Vava'u and the other in Alofi. It's the International Date Line again. We got back the day we gave away on the 20th. Now we are back on the same days as the U.S. That will not change for the duration of our voyage. This is a space, not a day.... read more

Geo: -19.0565, -169.924Another tender port awaits us today. We have been warned yesterday by our captain that attempts at disembarkation during the four previous trips to this island were thwarted by high surf and extreme tides making tendering too dangerous an endeavor. Today, however, the water is almost flat and it appears we will go to shore. Our wake up call fails us but we're up anyway. As usual, cereal and fruit for me and Mom curtails her attempts to order weird stuff like almond milk, gluten-free anything or special oatmeal and sticks to the items on display. We need to get our tender tickets and arriving on deck 4 early will provide the opportunity for quicker boarding. We pick up our numbers, #9. That's probably tender #2 or 3. Not too bad. We wait for ... read more

Geo: -21.136, -175.216Today's disembark procedure is simplified by the presence of a pier in Nuku'alofa, sparing us of the ordeal of the tender operation. A fifteen minute breakfast gets us off the ship and onto the pier by 8:45am, earlier than expected. The money conversion trailer is outside and quickly changes $100 USD into $206 TOP, roughly two Tongan for one U.S. and we meet up with our group. Two vans provided by Toni's Guest House will be our transportation around the island. No boats today. On Tongatapu's northern shore lies Nuku'alofa, the country's capital and major port. Sprawling along the sea and backed by a lagoon, the town features white-frame, picket-fenced houses. Its small size makes it easy to explore on foot. Most of the activity centers along the waterfront thoroughfare, with the Royal Palace ... read more

Geo: -15.6633, -175.612Today is a sea day. We have a leisurely breakfast. I grab my cameras and IPad and head to the library while Mom does a load of laundry and a few errands. The internet sucks today so I concentrate on loading pictures from cameras and writing. Karen meets me later and we go up to the pool where she lies by the pool and I continue my work. I observe a golf contest poolside for awhile and then we head down to prepare for dinner. It's a Gala Night for dinner so everyone will be dressed up again. Tonight it's lobster and Mom likes that. I have the halibut instead and both of us finish off with cherry crisps. We have dinner with the Minnesota couple along with another couple we've eaten with before ... read more

Geo: -12.1575, -169.239Awake at 7:30 this morning, I figure I'll try again to get out the blogs on the Internet and find it's working great. I load all information to the TravelPod website and send out a batch of entries. Mom gets up and we finally head for breakfast after 9am. There's a lecture this morning at 10am on "The 10 Best Cruises for your Bucket List". We listen to that one from Lucy followed by another presentation by Melvyn Foster titled "Heroines of the Seven Seas". Both were interesting. It's noon and we both head to the library to hang out for awhile. Mom reads her book and checks out my blog pictures, giving them the nod of approval. I went on the free web sites offered by Holland America, the New York Times and, ... read more

Geo: -2.81137, -163.762We know it's Sunday because the football games are on at all the bar TVs aboard ship. It's never our local teams but we don't watch anyway. The extra hour of sleep was great but we're going to have to pay them back someday. We are now five hours behind West Coast time. For example, right now we're sailing west towards Pago Pago, Samoa with around 400 miles to go and it's 4pm and 85F. Back home, it's 9pm and according to our info, it was in the low 70s in Castro Valley. The ocean temperature is warm. It's been running around 86F for over a week. That's warmer than the average heated swimming pool. El Niño is being blamed for the higher water temperatures, increased clouds and odd weather pattern. With breakfast out ... read more
