Oceans and Seas » Atlantic March 2nd 2016

Wednesday 2nd March, 2016. Cruising the Atlantic Ocean Another lazy morning followed by lunch in the restaurant. At 3.00 pm we went to see the new Guest Lecturer who is called Keith Appleyard. His lecture was called "Working with GCHQ" which was the story of breaking and intelligence gathering and its successes and failures. D found it quite interesting but M found his delivery boring and the information inconsequential. He is not as good as Clive. After dinner we went to see the new Guest Entertainer, a singer/commedien called Jed Fry. We followed this with a visit to Scott's Bar to see the cabaret which was "Jukebox Favourites".... read more

Friday 26th February, 2016. Cruising the Atlantic En Route to Bristol We skipped breakfast but made lunch. In the afternoon we went to the quiz and played with John and Christine. After the quiz we went to the "Meet the Team" in the Marco Polo show lounge. The whole show team arrived and we were allowed to ask questions about the costumes, life behind the curtain etc. It was quite an interesting chat. The dancers explained why they had to rehearse in the corridors, how there was no time for shyness when changing costumes at the back, the musicians explained how they have to change the tempo for different singers and all manner of other things. Ross told us who was leaving at the end of the cruise - he is going back to Thompsons in ... read more

Geo: -23.8858, -129.023The passengers on the Queen Mary 2 are mostly Australians with around 200 Americans, lots of Brits, a few New Zealanders, and a few other nationalities. The announcements, including the daily noon navigational report, are given first in English by the captain or the officer on duty, then translated into German, French, Spanish, and Japanese. There are very few children on the trip and not too many adults who look to be younger than 50. As we cruise westward on the Pacific, we have a lot of time zones to go through. During the first eight days at sea, we had seven time changes. There will be a few more to come having a total of ten by the end of the cruise. Twenty-five hour days, one after the other, have made for a ... read more

Wednesday 24th February, 2016. Cruising the Atlantic Ocean We didn't bother with breakfast again. At 11.00 am we went to see Clive's final lecture "Lisbon: Shaken Not Stirred - And Reflections On South America". After lunch we went to the quiz at 3.30 pm. 'We were Robbed' held our own but didn't win. After dinner we went to the 'Stars for a Night' show. This was largely a passenger show where the Musical Theatre Group, the Tap Group, and the Passenger Choir performed the numbers they had been praticing all cruise. Added to this mix were two crew performers. One guy did a drum solo and Laz (our lovely barman from Scott's Bar) sang a couple of numbers. Pam and M had front row seats next to Sandra. John was in the show. It was surprisingly ... read more

Geo: 17.1207, -61.8451We dock in the colonial town of St Johns, Antigua just before 7am. Adventure of the Seas follows us in and moors alongside us and P&O Britannia which was already here before either of us. We breakfast in the main dining room with a view out over the town. We have been here once before back in 2005 when we spent a week in Antigua. Our hotel was situated in the south east corner of the island but we took a day trip to St Johns one day. Ironically there were cruise ships in port that day and Serenade was one of them. Having seen most of the island on our previous visit we decide to just venture into St Johns today to do some sightseeing and shopping. As we don't have a tour to ... read more

Geo: 13.8941, -60.9686Our plan was to rise earlier than normal this morning so that we can see the Pitons that are located near the southerly tip of St Lucia. These iconic twin mountains are the subject of many a holiday snap and as we are heading to Rodney Bay which is the north of the island we fear we might not see them. Alas, even though we went to bed early the ship is docked in Castries by the time we get up.Slightly earlier tour time today and so we shower early and head to the Windjammer. I have cheesy scrambled eggs..a first. As usual we are early for our 8.15am meet time. It's almost impossible and unheard of for either of us to be late for anything. Peter and Patrick. P&P. Properly Punctual. We meet Shanga ... read more

Sunday 21st February, 2016. Cruising the Atlantic Ocean In the morning we went to a cooking demo in the Captain's Club. There were three chefs there including Lovely Jubbly and the head honcho. Katie was commentating. We didn't take much notice of the cooking but it was good fun listening to Katie propose to each chef in turn as they produced their delicacies. After luch in the restaurant we went to the quiz (didn't win). After dinner we went to the show which was called "Shake the 60's" presented by the show team. It was pretty good. We followed this with "An Evening with Katie" up in Scott's Bar.... read more
