Today is a full day at sea. Now whether it was last night's success at trivia that went to our heads or the fact that we forgot that an inside cabin is like living in a cave and we'd gone in to hibernation mode, we don't know. Our brains didn't compute that it was time to get up and our alarm must have had the same problem!! We didn't wake until 9:55. Morning Trivia was in 5 minutes. Never mind. Let some others win for a change. Lead them in to a false sense of security! We had a leisurely brunch on the aft deck. Despite being grey and overcast, the wind was only 5 knots (gentle breeze) and strangely temperate. It was about 60°F on deck but felt decidedly warmer. After breakfast we took a ... read more

Crossed the Irminger Basin where depths exceed 9800 feet. Very windy (81 mph) with rough seas (21’ waves) today. Several in the group didn't feel well today. Too much rocking 'n rolling on the high seas. Most of us went and saw "Angels & Demons" - excellent movie. No northern lights today. ... read more

Up around 9 a.m. We were in the North Atlantic and the seas were pretty rough - lots of rocking & rolling. Roxie not feeling well again so she took some Dramamine and rested. I went to breakfast with Judy & Diana and then took my computer to the Explorer Lounge and worked on my logs. As we move closer to land, the seas seem to be calming down. We’re all at the art auction now which should start in a few minutes. Nothing for me today. The frozen marguerites are wonderful so I just ordered one as we wait for the auction to begin. If you’re interested in buying art, the place to do it is on the ships at sea. They have all the known and unknown artists and the prices are typically ½ ... read more

Slept until 9:30 a.m. again - the rocking motion of the ship is wonderful for sleeping well. Then I went for a seaweed wrap and massage. While I was wrapped up like a cocoon I got a foot/ankle (trying to help the swelling) and scalp massage. She used frangipani oil on my scalp so I got that service for free - usually has a price all its own. After I showered got a back massage and I felt better for the rest of the day. Read a while and saw “The Proposal” with Sandra Bullock. Absolutely the funniest movie I have seen in a long time. I would recommend to everyone. Formal night for dinner. ... read more

Queen Mary 2 Cruise Sat 29th August we boarded the QM2 in Southampton with our backpacks with clothes for summer, winter and of course ballroom attire! After having high expectations of the cruise we were not disappointed. During the day we attended art lectures, headed to the on board planetarium, partaking in RADA workshops and watching there Romeo and Juliet production, jogging round the running track , gyming, swimming or practicing for our starring role singing in the National Symphony Orchestra choir. Note - Jo has musical talent, I do not! Therefore Jo also entered the talent competition which surprisingly had no judges. The hardest choice to make was were to eat every night as we were spoilt for choice with the amount of restaranuts on board, both of us agreed that we had the ... read more

I’m taking an Ethnomusicology class here on the ship. Ethnomusicology is actually a field of research where people (ethnomusicologists) study music as culture. For the past couple days we’ve just been discussing identity and culture in music, but today my professor went crazy with his questions and discussion… What is music? What is a musician? Who are musicians? Who decides what musicians are and aren’t? Are “musicians” a social construct developed by society that make “non-musicians” feel inadequate to participate in music? What makes music good or bad? What does a certain type of music say about a culture? Or the people singing it? What are the underlying meanings in different songs? Pretty loaded questions…and that’s just a little taste. Over the next 2 months we are going to go out into the cities we visit ... read more

First day at sea and it’s been kind of rough...the water that is. We have literally been on a rocking boat for probably 20 hours. It’s pretty hilarious to watch everyone walk around, especially when we’re in lines, because everyone will lose their balance and start shifting in one direction and then stumble back in the other direction all in sync. We’ve even gotten air a couple times. The front of the ship flew up and then came down with a very hard thud, shaking dust off the ceiling. Girls starting screaming, haha. Lots of people are getting sick, but not me thank goodness. Crew members are basically all over the place cleaning up vomit…we’re off to a great start here!  On another note, to know that this is only Day 1 of 7 spent ... read more

hey everyone. we made it out on the open ocean and now were heading into the intercoastal waterway. we stoped off in annapolis for a couple days. we had some engine problems. but dont worry were getting that all taken care of. although if anyone has a spare motor they would like to donate to us for our trip that would be very appreciated! were traveling in the chesapeake bay on our way to norfolk where the real intercoastal starts. we really underestamated the great atlantic ocean. we had a few waves come over the stern but everything is fine well brendan got a little wet and our little radio was sitting in a foot of water in the cockpit but other then that it was pretty fun. surfing down waves and having to really hold ... read more
