Tuesday 2nd January 2007 We got up 1.5 hours later than planned and rushed around trying to leave Christchurch. We went into town and picked up a hire car from Thrifty that needed to be relocated to Picton (so cost us nothing but petrol). It was a Toyota Corola - not too bad, but not the V6 Ford Falcon I was hoping for... I dropped off my snowbaord bag (with all my kites, some winter clothes, books, snowboard, etc) and my new paraglider at Dave's-- my paragliding instructor--house. The plan was when the rest of my paragliding kit (harness and reserve chute) finally arrive, he would put it with the glider and get both packages picked up by the transportation company I had arranged to send it all back to my parents in the UK. We ... read more

We went into a local dive shop this morning and got suited up for the snorkel with seals. We each wore a 7mm "farmer john" wetsuit (overalls), and a 7mm long sleve wetsuit jacket. Plus of course booties and a hood. This is the coldest water that we've ever snorkeled in at about 12C (53F). With us we had a guide, boat pilot (from the very similar Tofino, Canada), underwater photographer, and two other customers that had never snorkeled before. We took a gutted out van down to the docks, and hopped on a small boat that took us out to a cove where hundreds of seals laid out on the rocks. We basically then jumped in the water, and half swam, half crawled over seaweed covered rocks. Initially the water was really cold, but once ... read more

In leaving NZ (very sadly) I compiled a list of the little differences between NZ and UK: In NZ: 'Wee' is in common use to mean small, not just by those with Scottish heritage. 'Dairy' means corner or convience store. They have 'Driver Reviver's on busy roads - free coffee for drivers! They are not afraid to be blunt and use words like 'Tosser' on government public awareness adverts - 'Don't be a Tosser' on the side of bins Another one in a bar toilet: Feel like a shit now? How would you feel if you let your mate drink drive... If you drink drive you are a f*cking c*nt! - Not an official government one that, but on the side of a bar. They start road works around the city after evening rush hour and ... read more

This travel blog has been a long time coming but with so much to see and little time to see it we have been kept very busy. We arrived in Melbourne excited after all the good things we have heard about the city and have not been disapointed. We spent a week in Melbourne while we waited to pick our campervan up. We spent our first few days near the city centre in the Oasis YHA. The ultimate English backpackers night out in Oz was on the Monday night we arrived and we took the the tram down to St Kilda where we were to spend our night in the Elephant and Wheelbarrow getting trollied and meeting the Neighbours crew. I have to admit that i was a little embarissed as i qued to enter but ... read more

Christmas this year was at Sean's parents house. There was a bit of a party first on Christmas eve. On Christmas Day we had turkey (and free range chicken for me!) which was roasted on the barbie. Yes you can roast stuff on a bbq (you just need one with a lid!). There was Christmas crackers, pudding and all the usual suspects. The weather - cold & rainy just like home!!! For New Year's Eve we headed over to Vedran's place for a bit of a barbie. We had KANGAROO!!! Yummy! For the countdown we went to North Brighton beach. From here we could see the fireworks in the city. It was a great night even if I didn't go for a swim. Just as we were leaving though I feel on the rocks and cut ... read more

As usual, the first day in a new place was spent doing a bit of a reckie. We had taken a brief stroll down the road from our hostel yesterday evening but hadn't found much of interest except for a gourmet fish and chips shop that was massively pretentious and way overpriced plus a hairdressers called 'Hey Jude' that I am going to have to pay a visit to! This morning, we walked into the city centre, taking in the sight of some uncannily English looking buildings on the way. Architecturally speaking it was as if we had been transported back to the other side of the world as we gazed upon buildings that looked old at first glance but had been styled to look like manor houses and old grammar schools. If it weren't for ... read more
