Hi everyone! I have a bit of catch up to do so bear with me... I start about two weeks ago when I left Akaroa to meet up with Caitlin in Nelson. I picked up Chippy in Picton where she'd been oh-so-lonely for a week or so. I think she may have enjoyed the rest after all we've put her through. I picked up Cait at her family friends' home in Nelson, where I met the cutest baby in the entire world and had a cuppa before we moved on to Marahau, a little town nestled at the base of Abel Tasman National Park. We booked a double kayak and two nights at campsites along the Coastal Track of the park making a three day, two night trip. The first day and a half, we paddled ... read more

Days 67 & 68 We boarded the bus and headed for The Bushman Centre where we saw a dvd of how they used to chase deer in the mountains on helicopters then jump out wrestle them and tie them up and fly them to deer farms in order to control their numbers. We then looked at their big fat pig, evil eels, a couple of possoms and deer - a very random place. We then dropped Stuart off to do hs sky dive over the fox glacier. He was taken to the town of Fox Glacier where he donned his jump suit and boarded the tiniest of planes which was pioleted by a ten year old boy (or at least he looked like one). Stuart was taken up to 12000 ft flying over Mount Cook and ... read more

Being raised in Melbourne does assist somewhat with adapting to the weather changes... but it is a challenge, still. They are frequent. Apparently the crappy, wet weather the west coast has been copping at the moment is a gift that comes from the east coast of Oz - I have generally found the Kiwis friendly etc. and am amused by their T-shirt which says "I support NZ and anyone playing the Aussies" - so, maybe the rotten weather front from our east is a bit of payback for such rudeness! Driving to Franz Joseph Glacier I swapped my normal glasses and sunglasses back and forth innumerable times as the sun and clouds waxed and waned, as well as having to adjust my mindset as a herd of cattle were being herded down the road towards me ... read more

It's still raining!! It has been raining for the last 3.5 days pretty much non stop. I did not realise it could rain that much. I think the following poem entitled "Rain" pretty much sums it up! It rained, and it rained, and rained and rained. The average fall was well maintained. And when the tracks were simply bogs, It started raining cats and dogs. After a drought of half an hour We had the most refreshing shower. And then, the most curious thing of all A gentle rain began to fall. Next day was also fairly dry (save for the deluge from the sky) which wet the party to the skin, And after that.... the rain set in! We have managed a bit of walking but it has all been a bit on the wet ... read more

After a week and a half of glorious summer sun shine we decided to do a couple of days camping a little way up the west coast at Franz Josef. Right on cue as we unpacked our tent, the heavens opened. We didn't do all that much here on account of the rain except for get eaten alive by Sand Flies ( Well, I had about twenty bites - which come up as large red welts that last for over a week - and Sara had a suspicious zero ). We did manage one walk up to the Franz Josef Glacier during a brief respite that kept us dry for the first half at least. Then feeling a little damp we drove up to Greymouth for a night where we sheltered from the continuing downpour in ... read more

Drove into Franz Josef and immediately booked ourselves onto the 3/4 day hike especially organised to fit in with the Stray tours for the following day. We stayed in a portacabin at the Rainforest retreat, and were abit disappointed to find their Spa empty! The Franz Josef Glacier Guides company was quite a big outfit. They gave us all the necessary kit for the hike, including boots and 'Talonz', crampons specially made to fit the leather boots. We went by minibus to the foot of the valley, then walked for an hour to the terminal face of the Glacier. It was so impressive to see one of the only glaciers in the world that is actually advancing. Incredibly it currently moves down the valley at over a metre per day, although the terminal face melts by ... read more

In Which We Discover That Waterfalls Are Where It's At, Baby! Gadzooks. I'm about a day behind thanks to suffering through dial-up internet service at our last two hotels. Mind you, these places, while very nice, are also out in the vast nowhere. Pass the sheep farm, turn left at the goats, and look behind the grove of trees. That's where we've been. It's a wonder they have toilet paper, and I'm complaining about slow internet connections. In the immortal words of Jesus, there's just no pleasing some people. A long, long day of travel today as we had to get from the mountains to the glaciers. Although they all meet at the top, you have to travel around their entire base to get from one to the other. It's a long haul. And the road ... read more

Stoppped off at Buller Gorge on our journey down the West coast to walk the longest swing bridge in New Zealand - and at 110metres, it really is pretty impressive - take a look at the photos! It got quite a swing going when we jumped our way across, trying best to send each other falling into the river below! Hokitika is home to the National Kiwi Center, and how could we resist!? It was pretty shabby though, but at least we got to see five of the famous endangered Kiwi birds that were pecking around in the dark enclosure. Unfortunately the piccies havn't come out that well because we weren't allowed to use flash, but at least we've seen them - couldn't really have come all this way and not. 16:00: All of a sudden ... read more

Climbed the glacier today, am soaked to the skin even in dry clothes as it appears to suddenly be monsoon season! The glacier was awesome, never seen anything like it, also v scary to climb, lots of big crevaces and drops and the odd bridge to cross...... Conviniently the glacier no longer has a nice smooth incline to the top at the start but a vertical face, which we had to climb! Takes a long time as the guides have to cut a path way into the rock with an ice pick, once at the top there are millions of pools filling the crevaces and it can get quite slippery. Definitely scarier than a sky dive! Oh and since everything got wet, my personal attack alarm has malfunctioned and makes a continuous clicking noise, though if ... read more
