Franz Josef Our next stop was Franz Josef on the South Island’s West Coast. It’s really only a short distance from Mount Cook National Park, but the Southern Alps form a central spine down the South Island that’s impassable by car for much of its length. The drive to the West Coast (AKA ‘Westland’) was suitably soggy. The coast bears the brunt of the ‘Roaring Forties’ (i.e. the winds blowing in from the Tasman Sea), which dump about 3.5 metres of annual rainfall there. If that’s not wet enough, the town of Franz Josef gets about 5 metres of rain each year and most of it seemed to be falling on our first night there. We’ve travelled to the other side of the World to find somewhere rainier than Manchester (or even Ramsbottom)! According to the ... read more

Saturday- I joined Ben and George on a days walk up the glacier- and ofcourse it rained- and I mean really really rained. It was great fun but I would have liked to have taken some more photographs. In the evening we went and watched the rugby finals and went to a pubs opening night- free beer- very messy! ... read more

Friday- I enjoyed the bone carving so much I decided to turn my hand to jade carving- of course it was a really sunny day and I was stuck inside but nevermind! The tools used water and their was less work by hand so it was harder to see what you were doing. I enjoyed the bone carving more but again I'm pleased with what I made today. I then drove down to Franz Joseph, I was going to go to Fox Glacier but after the unsociable night I had had I decided to go to the busier of the 2 towns. I met 2 rugby lads who had just left Oxford Brookes Uni and went to the pub with them- so definatly more sociable. ... read more

Glacier Walking today!! Got a fairly early nigth so was bright eyed and bushy tailed ready to face my 3/4day on a very rare glacier. It runs through rainforest...very few glaciers are in rainforests apparently. So its a warm glacier. which means wet! The day basically consisted of 4 hours on the ice and about 2 hours gettin kitted up and actually along the valley to the base of the glacier. We were all issued with boots and ice-talonz and waterproof jackets and overtrousers plus mittens and hats.-Toasty Warm! We reached the ice of the glaciers terminal face (i think that is the correct term)! The initial climb was steps cut in to the ice and guided by hand ropes. Very easy and gave us all a chance to adjust to the ice-talonz. We continued up ... read more

Well After last nights shenanigans everyone was a little worse for wear....and incredibly quiet bus journey. We stopped at the Bushman Centre to see a bit of life on the West Side (sorry west coast!) Basically a hut with loads of deer and possum hunting memorabilia and taxidermy galore. Some disgusting (live) eels in grotty water, a worried looking live possum (surrounded by possum skins) and a very depressed looking fat pig. Alun was 'volunteered' (read 'made') to feed the poor thing hunks of bread before beating a hasty retreat. To be fair the big ugly pig just laid down after the bread was finished. Too mind numbingly bored with his daily performance to even think about attacking Alun. It wasnt in the least bit menacing but Im sure the health and safety bods would have ... read more

ok bit out of order this but keep promising to mention the walk that blew me away- mentally and nearly physically too! This was a 5am alarm call- ( see I keep saying its not all cushy!) -followed by an hours shuttle to the walk. The coach was quiet as everybody tried to get their bearings and wake up- apart from 2 chatterboxes at the front ( myself and a Canadian called Trish) . Trish foolishly adopted me as her walking partner when she got on the bus- foolishly as I have come to the conclusion I am a real scaredy cat and this walk proved this further...... The huts at the beginning of the walk were surrounded by a maneating swarm of bluebottles. Actually- it was pretty nasty - they had evidently been breeding and ... read more

The Franz-Josef glacier is one of only 4 (I think) glaciers in the world that descend to temperate regions (i.e. from several 1000 m above sea level, to just 250 m above sea level). The other one is it's neighbour, Fox, and the other two found in Argentina. The FJ glacier is pretty spectacular from far away, and I should imagine it is mindblowingly stunning when viewed close up. My plan was to see it close up after a 10 minute helicopter flight to high on the glacier and then do a little wandering around for a couple of hours on the pristine blue ice (with fully fledged ice guide and proper ice boots and picks and paraphenalia, obviously). However, it was not meant to be as the weather was crap and too cloudy. This meant ... read more

Right - I'm back in civilisation. Have been to visit "Old Macdonald" on a farm in the midlle of nowhere and some very strange locals in "barrytown". Both were very small places filled with villagers whose main passtime seems to be to perv over the young girls who come in on the backpacker buses. Old Macdonald was particulalry bad and growled "ooo ahhhh I'll be waiting for you" every time he saw anything female. I decided to abandon the "f*ck truck" and go off on my own. This was slightly scary as having taught me how to sail a big boat the lovely Kiwis just dumped me on a beach on my own and told me I had to hike to the accommodation. Unfortunately for me the accommodation (a boat) had sailed away for the day, ... read more

Kto skor pride, tan skor melie. Boli ... read more

Well as luck would have it I managed to get a rental car the day I left Kinloch lodge. I'm probably one of the few people who was able to get a car in Queenstown. Timing is everything. Anyway after pondering the limitations of taking the bus I thought I'd just check. I didn't really expect to find one. So I've traveled by plane, train, bicycle, bus, and now automobile. I would have liked to continue to cycle up the west coast but I just ran out of time and there were a few things on my list that I just had to do. One of which was glacier trek on the Franz Joseph Glacier. I left Queenstown and drove over Haast Pass to the coast. I stayed at the motor camp, pitched my tent and ... read more
