Our friend Harry arrived in Christchurch in the morning from Nelson and gave Martin a lift out to get the hire car then we got on our way early afternoon to make our way to Queenstown. It’s a 7 hour drive south west from Christchurch and we saw some amazing scenery along the way. We stopped at Lake Tekapo which is a huge lake with striking blue water and a small church at the bottom, postcard perfect place with a snow capped Mount Cook overlooking it. A little further on we came across another beautiful lake called Lake Pukaki and there was absolutely noone around so we had a peaceful wander around. We couldn’t get over how clear the water was and such a vibrant shade of blue. We passed through the Kawarau Gorge and stopped ... read more

Queenstown was our next stop. This is the adrenalin sports capital of probably the world and is particularly famous for bungee jumping. It also happens to be in a very pretty spot just off a huge lake. We first took the gondola (cable car) up the mountain and went on the luge at the top. We went around five times and Jason reckoned he won every time. Its quite a fast track and we even witnessed a poor Japanese girl come flying off her kart after not slowing down at a big drop. ( Jason didn't think this was funny-not!). The next day we went on a white water rafting trip. We picked the river suitable for beginner's which is the Kawaru river and parts of it were used in the Lord of The Rings (bit ... read more

On the drive down to Queenstown, we had some stunning views driving through the Lindis Pass, Lake Dunstan, Lake Hayes and the Gibbston Valley - where we stopped at Waitiri Creek and sampled some of their wines. During our drive the speakers on the van broke, so we decided to replace them the following day and headed to a car garage and we then organised a radio mechanic to come and fit them. In the mean time, whilst we waited for all of this to sort itself out, Jonny and I headed up on Gondola and went on the Luge and walked around the top of the hill and admired the views overlooking Lake Wakatipu. The following day we decided to do an adrenaline activity that neither of us had done before, so white water body ... read more

We hit the westcoast next and headed north to some of the South Island's main tourist attractions, the Fox and Franz Joseph glaciers. Both were stunning and induced lots of talk using words not heard (and never expected to be heard) since GCSE Geography such as "terminal and lateral morraine"!! We were able to get up close and personal to the glacier faces and watch enormous chunks of ice fall into the rivers below which landed with a big echoing boom! After the glaciers, and plenty more geography talk, we continued our drive further up the westcoast. The drive was beautiful and again we found ourselves stopping to take photos far too ofter. We stayed overnight at a couple of campsites next to inland lakes and visited the stunning Hokitika Gorge. Every morning we had to ... read more

I never thought I would do it, but I did and I am now hooked on adrenalin activities! I was scared, but more could go wrong crossing a road...134 metres above river and such a rush as you fall through the air all alone. It's so high once you bounce back up again you get another freefall.... read more

At some stage, I was wondering whether to add this trip here because I worried that I could recall some unhappy memories during the trip. Now, I decide that I should not omit this. For it would not be wise for one to forget the past. Nevertheless, the scenery in New Zealand is beautiful and it seems it will be a pity if I am not to post and share the pictures from my trip. My route in NZ was: flying into Auckland, then got a cross-country train to Wellington. From Wellington, I took a ferry to Picton on South Island, where I continued my journey to Christchurch. I then travelled by bus to Queenstown, and from there I had a tour to Mildford Sound before ending my trip. I would say my trip really ... read more

I have now reached New Zealand, which is like everyone says - very beautiful and lovely with great scenery although the weather can be a bit of a tester. If you hear a New Zealander complaining about the rain in England you can tell him where to shove his kiwi fruit as this is meant to be the height of summer and it has rained quite a lot...as you will hear. I arrived in Christchurch in early January and I had a great plan to stay there for a few days, make friends, and buy a campervan with them and tour New Zealand in true old school style! Anyway, possibly due to my lack of social skills, I managed to find not one person who shared the same burning desires towards camper van based travel as ... read more

I wake around eight after a wierd nights sleep with the sun flowing straight into my tent and sparkling over the lake. Really beautfiful and few sandflies. Its very quiet here. I breakfast on a bacon roll and a cup of tea ... isnt' life wonderful ... New Zealand bacon is a bit more fatty but still difficult with no oil. The suns' already very hot and its only 8.30. I return the mug to next door, thats, two ive lost now, my favourite tin enamel one is on the Banks, somewhere and the Kiwi mug was left at the Crayfish Van in Jackson I think. I reflect on last nights' dreams ... adventure dreams and decide it must be all the excitement of the travel as I dont usually dream so much. I go for ... read more

Today we had a bit of a lay-in. Well I say lay-in, but we were up at 7am, as today was ‘optional activities’ day. We’d all booked these up with the guys on the Sunday drive from Christchurch to Lake Ohau. I had chosen the two things I wanted to do, even before I’d even come out to New Zealand, the ‘Lord of the Rings 4x4 tour’ and the 12,000 ft Tandem Skydive. I was really excited about today, though when I looked outside, it was very overcast. There were eight of us doing the Lord of the Rings tour this morning, and a few others were doing theirs this afternoon, as they were either bungying or Shotover jetboating this morning. The group this morning were, from my tour, Lisa (a schoolteacher in Sydney), Tania, Jo ... read more
