Penguins! We arrived just in time to visit Dusky Beach to see the rare Yellow-Eyed Penguins arriving home from a hard day's fishing in the sea. We spotted one wash up on the surf and a few more were waiting patiently for their partners in the rocky clifftops, with one penguin right in front of us in the grass! We bumped back up to the harbour in the van and visited the Blue Penguin Colony, which are protected by a conservation team. We sat in a mini stadium overlooking the small bay, which is illuminated by special lights that the penguins can't see and we were instructed not to take any pics or videos as our flashlights could upset them. We sat patiently as the sun set and marvelled at the bull kelp reflecting the floodlights ... read more

10pm - Yesterday was eventful to say the least. It started as normal, we awoke in the pretty hostel in Akaroa and as with all hostels needed to leave @ 10am. Having packed we checked out a few of the local shops including a pretty little gem shop where we were both given a small, scented fake rose (Claire just named them aROSEatherapy). The previous evening after our cliff top drive we had met an american girl named Olivia at our hostel. She gave us many tips on where to visit both here and in Oz and happily befriended Claire because of their shared addiction to Rum. After looking around the cute town yesterday, we (I) drove to Oamaru. This is a slightly larger town known for its 2 penguin colonies (Both yellow and blue eyed) ... read more

Oamaru also apparently has penguins. They only come out in the morning and evening; so I got up at 7:30, but when I walked down to the ocean there were no penguins in sight. I chatted to a man at the beach who told me they had made their trip from land to sea at 6:30. Out of luck, I decided to stick around the town for the day and wait for the penguins to come back home. It's not like I'm in a rush to get anywhere in particular. The town is idealic and uneventful. It seems as ... read more

Mark and I (just to recap, I decided to name my car Mark) started our drive down the coast to somewhere. I left the city at 2:30 and hoped to get as far as Oamaru before dark. But by 5:30 the light was fading fast and I was just coming to the outskirts of Timaru, a fair sized town, but with no hostels or reasons to stay. I missed the turn into town, but I desperately needed to pick up a coffee. But, with no coffee shops in sight, I picked up Will instead. It was getting dark, and starting to drizzle, and he had a cardboard sign saying Oamaru and a bag with juggling clubs. It's a good thing I didn't watch that horror movie The Hitchhiker, because picking up people with a bag ... read more
