Ok, so we are seriously behind again with the blogs. Sorry, we will do our best to catch up, and fill you in with our last few months of adventure as briefly as possible. We have a few important messages for August first though- Congratulations to Marie and Ben on their wedding, and congratulations to Michael and Charlie on the birth of baby Mia. After a night in the surf beach of and Curio Bay, another DOC spot with an honesty box as payment, we drove through the scenic route to Papatowai, Waikawa, and stopped at Purekakanui.........the Maori names are a real mouthful and difficult to remember, which is a bit like the welsh language I guess. Then we stopped at the very simply named ¨Jack´s Bay¨ which was beautiful and secluded with small, cute houses ... read more

Net even te laat aangekomen ... read more

I am back tracking now, but the kids wanted me to be sure and post some pictures of our first trip to Oamaru to see the penguins. We ended up seeing more seals, and were able to get closer to them, but everyone was excited about seeing both seals and penguins. The penguins are very shy. They come out of the water at dusk and climb up into the hills for the night. They leave again at dawn for the ocean. There are penguin viewing shelters where you can discretely view them coming and going. We also thought it was funny that we found the Whitestone Cheese shop. Just like home:) Dropped a nice amount on cheese at the shop as well. And, we got a lot of great info on penguin viewing. We were also ... read more

So we are finding now that we are a little behind with the blog, due to lack of internet over the last week or so! So we will be doing an express version, to try and catch up a bit! We'll upload the photos, but probably won't be much written to speed things up. Photos speak louder than words anyways, so enjoy! After Mt Cook/Twizel we headed to Oamaru on the way to Dunedin for one night. This is penguin coast, so we went on the hunt for the elusive yellow eyed penguins. Other than some nice buildings that was pretty much it for our stay there!! Lots more to come in Dunedin!... read more

We arrived in Oamaru quite early and checked into Swaggers backpackers, It is a real home from home place and Agra the owner is lovely! We got to choose our own dorm, shes got bread in and cookies and tea and coffee then took us around town to show us where to go and what to see bless her!!! What service! The house is full of lots of stuff and games, it reminds me of Nana Johnson's house!Lots of bits and bobs everywhere! She told us the penguins waddle about into the old town from the beach each night- how funny is that - cant wait to see them!! We went for a walk around town then chilled out for a bit in the house as the weather turned bad to rain rain rain!! Was quite ... read more

Yeah - today we go and see penguins! After a really short drive of only 2 hours (will think nothing of driving in England now) we arrived at a funky hostel called Swaggers Backpackers. At 11am we were the first to arrive and so the owner (a wacky lady called Agra) showed us around and let us chose our own beds! It looked like Agra had just converted her home into a hostel (with a private section for her and her 16 year old son) but it was full of old comfy couches and chairs, plus lots of bric-a-brac, really homely and reminded me of Aunty Mildred's house. As Agra was itching to get out of the hostel she kindly offered to show us around the city and gave us a free tour! She took us ... read more

Today we spent the morning in Christchurch and went with all the Granny's up the gondola and around the city by tram ( we seemed to have hooked up with a saga bus tour or something ) It was a fairly tame ride, but I still got a bit squeemish as the gondola began to swing in the wind. You are meant to have a cracking view of the southern alps from the top but due to low cloud it was a bit limited. We then jumped in the van to begin our 5ish hour drive to Oamaru which was really dull and quite possibly the longest straightest road we have ever driven on. It was fairly tiring stuff so we stopped of in Timaru at Carolines bay for lunch and a dook in the sea ... read more

Paikka on luultavasti eteläsaaren toiseksi eteläisin kohta. Paikan erikoisuus on fossiilimetsä. Eli periaatteessa 160 000 000 vuotta vanhoja fossii... read more

...because, after all, he was born for this. This was the day we began our 12-day caravan tour. I'm going to pick up the pace a bit (I'm writing this way after the fact and I'd like to catch up a bit) so here are some highlights of the route Christchurch - Oamaru - Dunedin - Balclutha - Gore - Clinton - Lumsden - Manapouri (which is sort of a J-shaped route, going south along the east coast, then crossing over to the west coast) * We unwittingly rented the giantest motor home available in New Zealand. (We needed the space for 3 giants plus Grace). For most Americans, this rig would be considered large, but hardly huge. On these narrow, winding New Zealand roads, this motorhome was a baaaad dude. Of course, we're also not ... read more

Dunedin was the next stop, a true Scottish settlement complete with a cadbury's chocolate factory which smelled divine! We travelled down to the peninsula where all the wildlife is, it was a beautiful day again so the views were once again spectacular! You are all probably getting a bit sick of us saying that! There are a few well known places that are obviously in the lonely planet guide, one of these such places is Sandfly Bay. a bit of a nightmare to find the road as it is like a maize with roads going up hills left right and centre! We parked the pimp mobile after driving about 4kms on a gravel road then headed down to the beach that we could clearly see......it didn't look so far......famous last words hey! We started on a ... read more
